last night after much consideration we have decided that our 2011 Disney trip must be cancelled until 2012:sad1:, we are stuck trying to sell our house so we are going to take it off the market until after the Holidays/begining of next year and use some of the money to repaint the house and spiffy it up (we have so outgrown this house) instead we will drive somewhere no more than 8 hrs away so all is not bad:goodvibes.

I would love to get some ideas from you guys on places to go as we have no ideas/plans yet and are open to all. This will be our first driving trip and we are AAA members all suggestions welcome TIA:thumbsup2

I don't know how much you need to spiff up but we bought & sold twice around the holidays. Our last house sold 2 days before Christmas. Lots of people take them off for the holidays so sometimes the inventory is lower & buyers are usually more serious. I know some of the houses I wanted to see from online pics in Oct/Nov had been removed from the market by the time we were ready to move out of state in Dec. It's a pain but just a thought.

Not sure it matters with all the foreclosures & empty houses out there, but wanted to throw that out there if you're really trying to sell.

Oh, and sorry about the trip! :( I think ours is going to have to be pushed back too.

taking your house off the market now could be a brutal mistake.. buyers around the holiday season are typically more serious than your average run of the mill weekend warrior. Not to mention many people have friends/family come in from out of state who decide to look while down.. /realtor

I agree with not taking your house off the market during the holidays. I would think a house nicely decorated for Christmas would show very well.

As for a trip close to you. You are in NYC, what about a trip upstate. I love upstate New York in the winter.

Or you might go to DC to all of the museums.

Sorry about having to postpone the trip. But it sounds like you have a good reason to put it off. The poconos can be nice in the summer. Very laid back and relaxing. Or the catskills if you prefer to stay in ny. The jersey shore isnt like it seems on mtv. Lots of nice family beaches. But rentals can be pricey unless you share a place with friends or family. Lancaster county in pa has alot of attractions that appeal to young families. And outlet shopping. :goodvibes

Thank you guys for your input and I never thought about it I just thought house buyers would really not be looking around the Holidays. To tell you the truth i'm exhausted with this housing situation and we just want to take a break, you guys are right it probably isnt the right time to do it, but I just don't want to deal with future home buyers in and out of my house around the Holidays.
I mentally need to decompress because this situation really has me a bit depressed and frustrated:sick:, I'm pretty sure some of you guys can understand.
I just want to forget and just do the Holidays with my family with this not hanging over my head thankfully the reason we are selling our house is because we really need a bigger one and not financial reasons.

We put our first house on the market around thanksgiving years ago. We didnt get alot of interest during the holidays or even in january. It was stressful having to pack up dog and kids anytime a realtor wanted to show the place. Just add the chaos of the holidays on top of that. I think that your making a good decision for yourself. Can you imagine selling now and making settlement in sixty or ninety days? You would need to be packing things up right after the holidays are over!:scared1:

We sold our house last year in December. They originally wanted 2 weeks until closing. I think we closed in less than a month and all the things found on the inspection were waived when we moved up the closing a week. We got close to asking price too. We were 3 homes that they were interested in and since we said we could closing quickly we got our house sold. With Christmas break it was easier to pack everything up. We had sold our Christmas tree and bought a small fresh fir tree for our Christmas tree.

You have to do what's right for you re sale of house, but I too have done contracts for last 3 sales/purchases in Nov. - Jan. (looked mostly between T-giving and Xmas). Buyers looking then are serious.

Now, re your trip - what month are you going and how old are your kids?

When I lived in NJ, whole family (sisters, parents, niece & nephew who were pre-teens) went to Chincoteague, VA. Quaint town on Eastern Shore - across from Assateague and the wild horses. You can take the Garden State Parkway down to Cape May and take the ferry over to Delaware.

DC also is great with museums etc. - stay in No. Va. to save $$ and take the Metro into city; can also visit Mt. Vernon/Arlington Nat'l Cemetery.

Also Lancaster, Pa - and Hershey Pa., including Hershey Park is nearby.

The White Mountains in New Hampshire are sooo pretty and there's so much up there for any age. THere's Storyland and Santa's Village for little kids, Attitash and all kinds of zip lines and stuff for everyone else. And I found the prices up there to be so reasonable compared to other vacation spots we've picked.

sorry did not mention this will be during the summer months and my 2 DD's are 5 yrs and 14 mos old. Also we always go Upstate for the 4th of July its a tradition which we LOOOVE!:cloud9:

where do you go for July 4th? We go to Indian Lake in the Adirondicks.

We bought our current house 2 days after Christmas. I agree with PPs that it can be a good time to sell.

OP- this. We did this in August and it was a really nice relaxing vacation without breaking the bank. Everyone in the family enjoyed it and our kids are 17, 13 and 2 1/2.
