Thanks both of you for joining in!

That  (hey that's the first time I've gotten to use that guy!) dessert does look awesome. I love desserts that are gravity-defying .

My boyfriend also has that knack for usually picking the better entree when we dine out. Your cheese plate does look yummy though!

Well, if you like the cheese plates, there will definitely be a lot more. Yay for the

I'm becoming quite a fan of your reviews and can't wait to see more! When are you going to WDW again?? My sister and I are going for a short trip in August and we're still trying to decide on ADRs (we have about two weeks left until we can book) and your reviews definitely help!

I wish we were going again soon...and we haven't even been home that long! I think our next trip will probably be 2012 Food & Wine, or 2013 Flower & Garden, so it will sadly be a while. Thanks for following along, and I hope my reviews are helpful :goodvibes

I'm loving your reviews!! The banana is funny!!!

Sorry I missed the start but I'm all caught up now! That dessert looks amazing:lovestruc

Thanks for the compliments and for following!

Definitely write a review! I've noticed that people on the DIS are always glad to see reviews, regardless of length or pics. We foodies just love to read about each other's dining experiences :)

This was technically our third day in Orlando, and we still hadn't had any breakfast! I had planned the day around AK, so we were doing breakfast at Boma and dinner at Jiko. Awesome, right?! Wish I was about to start the day all over again!

Anyway, we arrived at Boma about 10 mins. ahead of our 9:45am ADR, and were seated right away. The breakfast choices looked delicious. Of course, we ordered the famous Frunch juice as our beverage, and it was delicious!!! We later found basically the same juice at a few other breakfasts, but we never got tired of it. It's the passion fruit that really makes it good.

I'm just going to show a bunch of pictures of various plates:

This was one of my plates. The bowl has yogurt...I think it was strawberry-banana. There's some banana bread I remember being good, and a muffin that I barely remember at all. The chocolate croissant is peeking out behind the banana bread...that was kind of a let down. The chocolate croissant from the Boardwalk Bakery was much better. Of course, you can't go wrong with fresh fruit. The regular croissant with jelly was as-expected.

These are some of DH's plates...he's a simple man, huh? They brought him some milk for the cereal. He thought the pancake and french toast were fine, but not great.

Here's another shot of the chocolate croissant, plus a chocolate chip muffin and some fresh fruit. This is another one of DH's plates:

This was my first plate (so these pictures are terribly out of order). I went directly to the buffet furthest to the right, which was where they had a few of the more exotic dishes, plus the ham carving station. I got a couple of stewed tomatoes, scrambled eggs with goat cheese, the corn meal pudding, and sausage/biscuit skillet. I think there's more on this plate, but that's what I remember. This was by far my favorite plate...all delicious! I think I have an exotic palate, since I always like trying different types of cuisine.

DH likes it a bit more simple.

This was his first experience with WDW bacon, and of course it wasn't much like real bacon. The rest was decent, though.

This is my quinoa porridge, basically quinoa and brown sugar. I wasn't sure I'd like this, but I really enjoyed the flavor.

We really stuffed ourselves, and the service was great. Our waitress, Zahira, made sure we always had what we needed. I think the African cuisine is where Boma really shines. Although the regular breakfast foods were fine, it was nice to try something different.

Total OOP cost before tip? About $38.

We were in at 9:35, and our check came at 10:19, although we probably didn't leave for a few more minutes after that, since we weren't in a huge hurry.

Atmosphere? If you've been to Boma, you know it has the African decor, but it's still pretty much an open area with a buffet. This is a 3.

Service? The hosts, servers, and chefs have been great both times we've been to Boma, so this is a solid 4.

Food? I think I'd give this a 4, but DH is at a 3.

Overall rating? Thinking about some of our other breakfasts, I'd say we'll be going back at some point. There are a lot of choices, and it's nice to do a non-character buffet.

I knew there would be a snack on the Wild Africa Tour, but I didn't know it would be so nice. We were on the 2pm tour, and we ate around 3:30-4. Some of you might have read the review threads for that tour, so you know that they have been offering a nice picnic in a large metal tin:

The top layer has prosciutto and dried meat at the top, fresh fruit balls on the left, and curried chicken salad on the right. The flower is edible, btw, and I did take a bite...it tasted kind of like lettuce.

The bottom later had three pieces of flatbread (pita). The top is salmon rolled with cream cheese. The bottom left is sundried tomato hummus, and the bottom right is obviously shrimp.

There were two bamboo spoons included, which we kept. I have to say, everything in this "snack" was very good, and DH agrees. They also had some Frunch juice to go with it! The only downside was that it got a bit cold and windy on the savannah, but we were pretty darn happy at that point, so we didn't care much.

I know the price of this tour keeps going up, but I would highly recommend it! Here's a gratuitous shot of me in my snazzy vest:

When we told our Wild Africa Trek tour guides that we were having dinner at Jiko, they made a big deal about it and gushed about wished they could go with us. Even though I'm sure they've eaten there, it made us feel good about our ADR.

We left AK at closing (5pm), and had about an hour or so to kill once we got to AKL. So, we took a little nap on a couch in the lobby. Our ADR was at 7:10pm, and once again we got there a bit early. I don't remember being given a buzzer, but let's say we got seated within 10 minutes, and leave it at that.

Our waiter, Mike, was very friendly. We decided to take the non-alcoholic route, and split a bottle of San Pellegrino. We enjoyed that enough that we ended up ordering it again at a couple of later dinners. I know it seems silly, but a nice sparkling water with lime is a great compliment to all the eating we were doing.

Here are some menu pics:

Before we even got to the food, there was bread:

We both liked this because it was different. The bottom pieces were sweet, with a hint of cinnamon, and we both liked that bread better than the top, which was more of an herb bread.

I was so happy with the cheese plate at Citricos the night before, that I decided to order it again:

I believe that from top to bottom on the menu was left to right on my plate. On the top is apricot jam, some roasted nuts, and honey. Of course, I was in heaven. I would run into the Humboldt Fog again, but it was one of my favorites anyway. Each of these cheeses really did have a distinct taste. I ate the nuts separately, but the jam and the honey made great pairings with some of the sharper cheeses.

For his appetizer, DH ordered the Taste of Africa:

There is an assortment of Naan, both hard and soft, and four dips. DH and I frequent quite a few Indian restaurants where we live, so we've had Naan before. DH never likes the one that's more like a cracker, so he didn't eat that. Also, a couple of the dips were pretty spicy, and he's not big on spicy (hot). He tried to get me to eat some, but I was desperately trying to eat a ton of cheese after having that major snack on the tour just a few hours prior. Sometimes the DxDDP isn't easy :rotfl:

For the main course, Mike made the filet mignon sound irresistable, so that's what DH chose:

Medium well, just like he wanted, and so good that he wouldn't stop talking about it the rest of the trip. If he ordered beef after that, he would always say that it wasn't quite as good as the filet at Jiko, so I'd say that's a ringing endorsement.

I am a huge lamb-lover, and I had planned on ordering it at Jiko before we even left on our trip.

I don't remember if I was asked how I'd like it cooked, but I usually order lamb medium because most chefs won't cook it any longer than that. My mother makes absolutely delicious lamb, and it's always well-done. Because I knew we still had dessert coming, I didn't eat much of the tomato-chickpea salad, but I do recall it had a kick to it. The lamb was good, and I ate as much as possible, but I couldn't finish more than the first piece. Mike kept trying to get me to take it with me, but we knew it wouldn't be any use since we were on the Deluxe plan.

Along with dessert, DH decided he'd like to try a pressed pot of Kenyan coffee, while I asked for vanilla rooibos tea:

In the background of the first picture, you can see that Jiko does their loose-leaf tea in a pot with a metal strainer at the top, rather than in a press pot. I found out later there was a good reason, but at this point I was just glad to have the tea. DH said his coffee was the strongest he'd had in a while, but very tasty. He took the second picture because he was enchanted with the choice of sugar...brown and white cubes! The little pots in back are pots of honey! Oh, and btw, the vanilla rooibos tea, with a little milk and honey, was absolutely the best tea I've ever had. I subsequently tried to order it wherever I could. Today, I tried the Starbucks version for the first time, and it just wasn't the same. Again, there was no additional charge for the coffee or the tea.

For my dessert, I wanted to try the Cape Malva pudding because it was exotic, and it came with vanilla custard and mango/apricot sorbet. Those are some of my favorite flavors!

This truly didn't disappoint. The cake was sweet, with a rich taste, but the sorbet helped offset that, and the flavors perfectly complimented each other. Plus, it wasn't too big, which was perfect after a whole day of eating big.

DH had the Tanzanian chocolate and cherry dessert:

He says it was delicious...I got a taste, and have to concur. I mean, look at it! You can tell it's rich, chocolate-y heaven.

On each trip, there was at least one time where a waiter would see us taking pics of the food, and offer to take one of us, so here we are right before we took the first bite of dessert greatness:

Total OOP cost before tip? $140.08

We sat down around 7:10, and we got the check at 9:08.

Atmosphere? Dark, but in a good way. We loved the decor, and it never seemed crowded or loud. A definite 4.5.

Service? Mike was nice and we had some good conversation, but sometimes he would leave us hanging a little longer than we liked. Also, I noticed another server was offering people hot towels when they sat down, but we didn't get any. Maybe it's because we didn't dress up a lot? We came from being in AK all day, so we did what we could. I guess this is a 3.5, since there wasn't anything too bad about it.

Food? 4.5, 'nuff said.

Overall rating? We can't wait to go back!!!

I actually did a little cheer :yay: when I saw the goat cheese eggs and quinoa on your plate!! I'm glad you enjoyed Boma's breakfast, I loved the different items they had.

Your meal at Jiko looks awesome - and SO makes me wish I had tried that chocolate cake! The Lindt truffle (as good as they are) I have here doesn't seem like it will be the same thing .

you guys are so cute--i love the jiko pre-desert pic! i feel like when i go on vacation with my husband, i never get any photos of the two of us together. you lucked out in that aspect!

still loving this review!!! :thumbsup2

JIKO has never disappointed us, glad y'all had a great meal as well!!!:thumbsup2

Most of the reviews I had read about Jiko were good, and it definitely lived up to the hype!

joining in,
I too love cheese and I loved the cheese platter at Citricos and Flying Fish.

Cheese platters are the best! FF was one of our last meals, and it was sooo great!

You think the Jiko chocolate looks good...wait for the Yachtsman dessert. I was in love :lovestruc

Great review. Can't wait for more.

Thanks! :goodvibes

Yeah, we never got many pics together on our previous trips, especially since DH likes being behind the camera, but for our WDW vacations we used Photopass to get a ton of pictures together, plus we got lucky with a few kind CMs who took our pic, like the one at Jiko.

This day started out at a pretty leisurely pace. Our breakfast ADR was at 10:05, so we took our time getting there. We still ended up at the GF early enough that we had time to lounge in a hammock on the beach for a bit. We definitely had warmer weather on this trip, compared to early December, so we took advantage of it a little more. The 10 mins. or so that we were in that hammock were some of the most relaxing on our trip.

I had canceled all of our other character meals, but I kept 1900 Park Fare because I really wanted to see the Mad Hatter and Mary Poppins, and because I wanted to try the famous strawberry soup.

We checked in 10 mins. in advance of our ADR time, as usual, and got a buzzer. 1900 PF looked very busy, and the hostess said the wait was about 20-30 mins. True enough, we didn't get seated until closer to 10:30. We took the required picture in front of the "castle" first, but we didn't end up buying it since it was so expensive.

Our waitress was Joan. No complaints about her. We both (predictably) ordered glasses of their version of Frunch juice. No pictures of just the juice, but it looked the same as it did everywhere else. It's in one of the pics below, along with the coffee we ordered a bit later.

As soon as we sat down, we saw Tigger heading our way, so we both waited to go get food until Tigger came to our table:

This was one of my first plates...I only remember it was mine because 2 biscuits and gravy, and 2 Mickey waffles, was way too much. I should've stuck with one of each. They were good, but I've had much better biscuits and gravy before. The bacon was, of course, terrible, but the ham was quite tasty. You can see the "Frunch" and coffee here, and my very first bowl of strawberry soup! I added the real strawberries for effect...guess I thought it looked gourmet or something :rotfl: Anyway, it was soooo good, that I went back and got more! I think I ate 3 bowls! Sweet strawberry deliciousness!

One of my later plates. I had a made-to-order omelet with ham, mushrooms, and something else...no cheese (ick). I sprinkled the capers on top. Very good. So good that I started eating it before I took the picture! Shame on me! You can also see some bread pudding with vanilla sauce on the plate. I really enjoyed this as well...I like my bread pudding kind of thick, and I hate the butter in the usual whiskey sauces, so I was glad to put a plain vanilla sauce on it.

Another quick character pic:

We had already met Pooh, Tigger, and Alice in jolly old England over in Epcot, so we didn't need autographs or pics with them, but they were all so nice when they stopped by, that we couldn't help it. Alice "demanded" that Luis get in the picture, and asked the character host to come over and take a pic, which he did in seconds flat. We were at 1900 PF long enough that Alice came by our table 3 times. By the third time, we thought we might be taking a little too much time to eat our meal, and we mentioned it to her. She told us it was no trouble, really, and that there was a "very large tea party" in the back room that she had visited 4 times! She was so cute!

Since you had to read my lengthy character review, here's some bread pudding porn:

DH also had some strawberry soup, but he didn't take a pic, since that would be redundant. Here are a couple of his plates:

Standard breakfast foods, and some fresh fruit. He, too, was disappointed in the bacon. He thought the biscuit & gravy was so-so. He really liked that strawberry soup, though...how could you not?

More character shots:

The settings on DH's camera were off, so both Pooh pics were blurry...that last one is the better one. Thank goodness we have the ones from Epcot.

Total OOP cost before tip? $44.71

We were in around 10:30, and our final check came at 11:22.

Atmosphere? Not much to say here...we did have some trouble finding the exit on the way out, since all the doors/fake doors look alike, and the windows are curtained. I guess this is a 2.5.

Service? Fine, but nothing special. We give it a 3.

Food? The strawberry soup and the bread pudding were the two standouts. The made-to-order omelet station was nice, but nothing we hadn't seen before. We'll give this a 3.5.

Overall rating? It's hard to go back to a character buffet if you don't have kids and have met all the characters before, but that strawberry soup might compel us to return again someday.

I'm glad to hear you guys had better weather on this trip! Warm enough to be in a hammock on the beach sounds definitely good! Your breakfast looks great! Biscuits and gravy, Mickey waffles, and Strawberry soup sounds like a good meal to me! (And bread pudding makes that even more wonderful!)

Can't wait to see the Yachtsman dessert...

thanks for a great update, You were not eating too slow at 1900 Park Fare (we ate there 3x and my son got see characters 4x and Pooh and Tiger played games and sat down next to him to play with the cars). I love to make to order eggs station. 1900 Park has better food for breakfast than dinner.

Breakfast looks much better at 1900 than dinner. I was not impressed with the dinner buffet. I guess I was comparing it to Crystal palace. I love CP. I really like your reviews! Doing great!! :thumbsup2

I think I recall you two got to enjoy one of the GF hammocks as well. WL has one or two on the beach, I think, but we never made it over there. I guess there's just something about that beach at the GF...

Really enjoying your reviews- Looking forward to reading the rest!:thumbsup2

Thanks!

We've only had two buffet dinners, Boma and Biergarten. We liked Boma better. I think it's hard to get great food at dinner buffets, since there are higher expectations on dinner.

We will probably make it to CP someday...seems like it would be a good place to go with kids. The decor at CP looks a lot like the Plaza Inn at Disneyland. Thinking of doing the Cape May clambake buffet sometime, though. For some reason we didn't make it when we were staying at YC in December, but reviews I've read seem to show a large variety of food there.

Subbing in since we're locals and I'm too tired to finish this review tonight!

No, unfortunately it was enough being able to wear t-shirts by the end of the trip! Most of trip we were bundled up in gloves and coats! I'd love to go in one of those hammocks though, they seem so relaxing (even more so in warm weather) :goodvibes
