We ate HOW much?? 10 days of total gluttony at WDW, with pics! UPDATE 9/2/12!

I'm glad that Jonathon is feeling better!! It's so nice of them to only charge you for a side. gotta love the Disney magic!!

I'm really hoping that Remy is still there when we go!! I love him so much!! I'm such a kid at heart.

I’m back again to review dinner at Via Napoli! ;)

I will start by saying this…Eric and I are each part Italian, I cook Italian food at home all the time, I’m a total pizza snob (Brooklyn pizza baby!!!), Eric is a semi-pizza snob (he’s not quite as picky as I am), and we have some of the best Italian restaurants here in NY. We usually do not go to Italian restaurants on vacation because we have so much Italian food here, and we like it a certain way. However, a colleague of mine had gone to WDW during Thanksgiving weekend 2011 and ate at Via Napoli, with her father who is from Italy. They both thought it was excellent and recommended it. So I went ahead and trusted her. Eric knows her too and trusts her judgment.
That said, let’s get down to business!

We had a 6pm ADR for Via Napoli. I had read the menu several times before the trip (of course!), and read some reviews…so I knew I wanted to try the pizza here. I knew it would not be like the NY pizza I’m accustomed to, but more like pizza from Italy. I was fine with this (pizza in Italy is also delicious!). The boys love just about any pizza, and they also enjoy spaghetti and meatballs. Jonathan was still off dairy (because he was sick the night before), so I explained to him before we went that he couldn’t have pizza, but they had spaghetti and meatballs. He prefers his pasta without sauce, so this was easy for him. He was excited for this.

When we entered, I spoke to the hostess in Italian. The lady that seated us thought my family was from Tuscany because of the way I spoke Italian. It’s not that case, just that when I learned Italian in school, I learned standard Italian which is technically Tuscan “dialect”. The family is actually from way up in northern Italy, bordering Austria. I spoke to everyone in Italian, the waiter, the busboy…and it was a lot of fun! They were speaking in English a lot though…I guess they need to keep up on it. It didn’t matter…we had a great time talking to them, and I got to reminisce about my trip to Rome and Florence with my sister in college (same trip as when we went to France).

The waiter sent the chef over right away to discuss Philip’s allergy and she was very nice. I told her that he would order either the pizza or spaghetti and meatballs from the kids’ menu and she said both of those are fine for him. She said if we need anything to have the waiter come get her and she will come over right away.

I was in the mood for a drink, and came close to just ordering a glass of Prosecco (I love the stuff!), but instead I got a Bellini, which is Prosecco (sparkling wine) with peach puree in it. It was delicious! Light, crisp and refreshing, just as a Bellini should be. Eric asked for the red sangria, but the waiter suggested the white sangria instead, as it is a nice, refreshing light sangria and great in the summer time. Eric took his advice and did not regret it. We both enjoyed our drinks.

We browsed the menu, and decided we would share a large pizza (supposed to feed 2-3 guests). We didn’t want just plain pizza, so we ordered pizza capricciosa, which had ham, artichoke hearts, mushrooms and eggplant on it. It was huge! Definitely could have fed 3 adults in my opinion. The pizza had a thin crust that had just enough crispiness to it without breaking, and was chewy in just the right way. Being thin, it was not doughy, and I liked that. The sauce was very authentic for sure. And the pizza was not loaded down with sauce. I don’t like when places pile on the sauce. There is not supposed to be a puddle of sauce…just the right amount was on this pizza for flavor and texture. The mozzarella was fresh as can be, but it melted correctly. Sometimes fresh mozzarella melts but then solidifies so quickly that it has an unpleasant, plastic-like texture. Not the case here…perfectly delicious mozzarella, but not the processed kind. The toppings were fresh and excellent quality. Ham was not too salty, fresh mushrooms and artichokes were used, and the eggplant was soft and delicious despite it not being breaded and deep-fried, and it did not have too many seeds. No bitter taste to the eggplant either. This pizza was absolutely delicious! The best I have ever tasted outside of NYC for certain! It actually reminds me of Lombardi’s in Little Italy in Manhattan…it was the first pizzeria in America and their pizza is the same style as Via Napoli was. Here’s a nice pic of it:

The boys both got spaghetti without sauce, with meatballs on the side. They both enjoyed it very much. Jonathan was happy to have some meat for the first time that day. He was also fine after eating this. Here’s a pic of Philip’s:

When we first sat down, Eric and I decided that we were definitely getting dessert here, so we resisted from ordering appetizers. We knew if we did, we would be too stuffed to eat dessert. Eric’s favorite dessert in the world is tiramisu. When we go to our favorite Italian restaurant here, he always orders tiramisu and espresso. And so he did the same at Via Napoli. The waiter brought him sugar, and Eric told him he didn’t need it. The waiter was impressed because he said usually people ask for it with espresso. Not my Eric…he drinks it straight! When Eric took his first bite of tiramisu, he was in heaven. He said it is just as good as our favorite Italian restaurant makes it, and he has never said that about any tiramisu except mine. I was glad he wasn’t disappointed. Here’s a pic of his dessert:

I also love tiramisu, but I instead opted for the zeppole dessert. Zeppole are fried dough with powdered sugar. They are very popular here in NY at the street fairs, like the San Gennaro Feast in Little Italy. They are best when they are fried fresh, placed in a brown paper bag with some powdered sugar and shaken up so that they get coated with the sugar. Then you walk around at the Feast, play some carnival type games, enjoy some entertainment, etc. This is of course after eating a big hero sandwich (a.k.a. a sub, a po’ boy, hoagie or grinder depending on where you are from). At Via Napoli, the zeppole were delicious. They make them small which I liked, since they were crispy. But they weren’t greasy. They add a little bit of powdered sugar, but they also give you a side of this heavenly chocolate sauce and fresh whipped cream to dip them. This was an amazing dessert, and a great way to eat zeppole. A lot less messy than tons of powdered sugar too! Here’s a pic:

Philip ordered a gelato sundae from the kids’ menu. He loved it and ate it all up.

I had told the hostess and the waiter that we were celebrating Jonathan’s pre-k graduation. The waiter said they would do something special. I know at WDW that usually means a cupcake, and I know those have dairy in them. But I wanted to keep him off dairy that day so his tummy would be OK. So I asked to talk to the chef again and she came right over. I told her that Jonathan, though not allergic to dairy, had some tummy troubles and we wanted to know if there was a dessert without any dairy. They had both brownies and sugar cookies without dairy (also gluten-free for those of you who follow a gluten-free diet and like desserts…it’s great that they have 2 options). I asked for sugar cookies, but the waiter ended up bringing him a brownie…this was fine, no problem. The waiter also double checked with me that Jonathan was OK because there could be traces of dairy in his dinner because of cross contamination in the kitchen, but I explained to him the same thing I told the chef. When he brought out the brownie, he also brought a few people with him, and lit a candle in the brownie. They sang a song to Jonathan in Italian, “Tanti auguri a te” (literally means “Best wishes to you”). This is the song they sing for someone’s birthday, and it is sung to the tune of “Happy Birthday” but they sang it to him for his graduation. He was so happy!

We all enjoyed the dinner at Via Napoli, and we would definitely return. I love Epcot so much because I can speak Italian in Italy, Spanish in Mexico, and I love meeting people from different countries. It’s very interesting to talk to them and they love it when you ask them questions about their country.
This meal cost us $100.11 including tax and gratuity, after the TiW discount was applied. We saved $15.40 on food and $4.00 on drinks for this meal. This dinner was worth every penny, from the outstanding service to the excellent food. When I return to work in a couple of weeks, I am excited to tell my colleague that her recommendation was terrific and how much all 4 of us enjoyed it at Via Napoli. The place is beautiful, feels like some of the restaurants in Italy, CMs are very warm and friendly, and the food is amazing. I would recommend it to anyone! :thumbsup2

Up next…Hollywood & Vine character lunch…why does this place get such bad reviews all the time? :confused3 Stay tuned for a positive one! :happytv:

I'm looking forward to hearing about what you thought of Via Napoli. I'm too am from NY, and have been having a hard time deciding between Via and Chefs for an Epcot lunch.

Ooh that's a tough one...I don't know what I would do, seriously! We loved them both! I hope the pics help, because I know my comments aren't! :rotfl: Take a look at both of my reviews above, but yes it is a very tough decision.

I'm a picky New Yorker too! Well at least when it comes to pizza...and sauce....and bagels!

You were in Baby Story? How cool!

Oh, I never touch bagels outside NYC. NEVER!!! :lmao: I mean, I don't eat them often at all but when I do, it's only in NY. On vacation I would rather eat other things. And yes, sauce! I make my own and it's hard not to be picky. I guess we are spoiled here with these things. But one thing I love about going down south is the fresh pecans in Georgia! Can't get anything but packaged ones here and they just aren't nearly as good as the ones down south. I also have a friend who is originally from southern California and she can't find a Mexican restaurant in NY that lives up to her standards...and she has been here for years already! Every region has its specialties, and when they try to make it outside that region, it's never exactly the same or as good in my opinion.

Yes, we were on A Baby Story! Yes, I am THAT crazy...but in a good way! :rotfl2: It ended up being very nice and it's great to have the memories...it was when Jonathan was born so Philip was in it too and he was only 2 years old! We love watching it together. :thumbsup2

I'm glad that Jonathon is feeling better!! It's so nice of them to only charge you for a side. gotta love the Disney magic!!

I'm really hoping that Remy is still there when we go!! I love him so much!! I'm such a kid at heart.

Thank you so much! I felt so bad for Jonathan...nothing worse than being sick on vacation, and nothing is worse than a stomach bug, at least to me. Poor kid...and he did not complain once, he's so good! :)

I'm a kid at heart too. As much as my kids love WDW, I sometimes think I have more fun there than they do! :rotfl: I love it when Remy comes by for a visit, and I still love when the characters come around at the character meals. I still feel like I'm really meeting Mickey! ;)

What a good review, now you have thinking of doing Chefs for lunch and Via Napoli for dinner. Right now I have Raglan Road for dinner but I think I'm gonna switch it now.

What a good review, now you have thinking of doing Chefs for lunch and Via Napoli for dinner. Right now I have Raglan Road for dinner but I think I'm gonna switch it now.

I think that's an excellent idea! But I have never been to Raglan Road, so I can't compare it to anything. I have read very good reviews about it, but there's just something about Epcot days. Eric and I look forward to eating in different countries in Epcot, and we do this for both lunch and dinner on the days we are there. We have spoken in the past about getting a park hopper on one of our future trips, and having dinner in a different country each day we go to a park. But we're at the point where we have our favorites, and we have others that were not bad places, just ones we don't care to return to.

One place we loved for the food at Epcot was Akershus (in Norway), on our 2010 trip, but the boys specify no princess meals now. I got them excited about 1900 Park Fare on this trip because we watched the video from our first WDW trip which included the dinner there, and they thought the stepfamily was very funny. Other than that, no princess meals anymore. We did a couple in 2010 (Akershus and the castle at MK). We really enjoyed the food at Akershus though, I almost wish they didn't have any characters there but I know the princesses are a huge thing for little girls. One place we can't go to is the restaurant in Japan with the hibachi, because Philip's shellfish allergy is airborne. So even if a nearby table has shrimp cooking on the hibachi, it can affect him and we're not willing to take that chance.

So, the idea of going to a different country on every park day went away. But, we are so glad we have tried so many. The only ones we haven't tried (TS) are Japan, China and UK. We originally had a dinner ADR at Rose & Crown but when I asked my colleague about Via Napoli, it sounded too good to pass up. I'm glad I switched it because of how great it was. Maybe we will try Rose & Crown on our next trip.

Loving your reviews. I've got a 6 yr old and will be eating at many of the same places in October.

I just read the whole thread! What wonderful reviews! Thank you for sharing photos of your beautiful family; your boys are very precious.

I remember reading a dining review from you last year, maybe? I remember commenting on how I like your username, and you said living in Brooklyn, you were a big Honeymooners fan.

You had a much more successful visit to California Grill than we did. I'm convinced it was mostly because I chose poorly.

We had the most awesome experience at the Yachtsman Steakhouse. Glad to see you guys did too. I enjoy LeCellier, but in food quality, service and atmosphere, it doesn't even come close to the Yachtsman.

I'll be reading the rest of your reviews when you post them. :)

OK, I'm way behind on your TR and dining review, but I just read the review of Yachtsman and had to go grab a porterhouse steak out of the freezer and thaw it out for dinner tonight! :lmao: i've also got some creamed spinach in the freezer that will be perfect. Neither will be as good as your dinner, but with a little pixiedust: I can pretend it is!

Last weekend's event really threw me off! Lucky thing I don't have much planned this weekend!

Hello! Just read through your dining report (so far!) and am loving your reviews. I currently have ADR's for Via Nappoli and Le Cellier for on of my days and have been leaning towards Via Nappoli but then everyone says Le Cellier is a must so I waffle back and forth but your review definitely makes it sound like Via Nappoli would be a better choice. Especially as we will also be dining at Yachtsman.

I've also been undecided about 'Ohana as it gets rave reviews and I'd love to try the dessert but the rest of the meal doesn't seem like all that. I'm actually thinking of The Wave or Grand Floridian Cafe in its place!

And a question on those lactase drops! How many drops do you put on your tongue? Do you do it at the start of them meal? Right before you put the dairy in your mouth? Repeat if there is dairy in your app, and then again in your dessert? I went to the Seeking Health website and it recommends mostly mixing them with your food. Are they really effective by just putting them on your tongue? Foods that I mostly have trouble with are heavy cream, cream cheese, ice cream, straight milk. I can have yogurt no problem and some cheeses. I'd love to be able to have ice cream and cream based soups again!!

Yes, you are correct about reading dining reviews from my before, but they were 2 years ago. I did my dining report as a countdown, from least favorite to the #1 restaurant of our trip (July 2010). We went to some of the same places on this trip and will return to them again in the future I'm sure. And yes, I am a big Honeymooners fan! :thumbsup2

I completely agree with you about Le Cellier vs. Yachtsman. I know Eric and I shared an entree and just added an extra side, but I believe the dinner at Yachtsman cost about the same (or maybe even a little less) than Le Cellier dinner cost us in 2010, and we both found the quality of Yachtsman and the restaurant itself to be far superior to Le Cellier. Yachtsman is one we are definitely going back to on our next trip, and already looking forward to going there again even though it is 2 years away!

We did have a nice time at California Grill, but not sure if we would return there on our next trip just yet. At some point in the future, sure, I would definitely go back, but we might try a different signature in its place next time. It will also depend on how it is after the re-furb (atmosphere, food and service).

:rotfl: I hope your porterhouse and creamed spinach were very good and satisfied your craving after reading my review! We really did love Yachtsman. It was one of our favorites the whole trip. I would also like to try their filet mignon, but the porterhouse was so good. :goodvibes

We liked Via Napoli better than we liked Le Cellier when we were there 2 years ago. The quality of the ingredients was just excellent at Via Napoli, all the CMs were very warm and friendly, the restaurant reminded me of when I was in Italy, and the tables are not on top of each other. Don't get me wrong, being in NYC we have been to plenty of restaurants where you are very close to the neighboring tables, and it wasn't the reason we didn't care for Le Cellier (we just weren't impressed with their food), but this is just another factor that, IMO, makes Via Napoli better. I have seen people review Le Cellier and say they liked everything except the fact that the tables were so close to each other, so that might be something to consider.

To answer your questions about the lactase drops...I never add them to a dairy food. I try to remember to take them around the time I take my first bite of something with dairy (5 drops on my tongue, or you can use a spoon if you really want to...10 drops if it is a dish that has a lot of dairy, like an alfredo sauce with pasta...it really depends on the individual person and their ability to digest small amounts of lactose or not). They just have a sweet taste, they are actually pleasant and do not alter the taste of my food when I take them directly. Sometimes I forget and take it a little later in the meal, sometimes I forget and take it after the meal and I am fine. Can't wait too long after though or I may still get some mild symptoms. Last summer was when I first tried them, and then I went on a cruise. I took them with each course I ate that had dairy in it (5 drops each time) because I didn't know yet what amount I would need and I didn't want to take any chances and feel sick during my one big vacation a year. I have to play with it, it's a lot of trial and error. For example, I discovered that for pizza, I feel best if I take 5 drops with the first bite of each slice (NY size slices that is! :rotfl2:). I eat yogurt without them and I am perfectly fine. I can also eat certain aged hard cheeses and no symptoms, so I don't bother to take the drops for that. Be careful though....nonfat dry milk is a very common ingredient in many foods, even some you may not think would have it like certain granola bars, breads and cereals. So when I eat one of those foods I take my drops. I carry them in my purse (it's a very small bottle) in a small ziplock bag (in case it spills by accident, but it has never done that in over a year of using them). In WDW I carried them in my fanny pack and they were fine! Hope this info helps...I know these have been like a miracle for me! :thumbsup2

Bangzoom - Dining reviews are still going strong and really enjoying them. Making notes for next year. I am so amazed at the extra care the CM's and the Chef's at the rests. are taking to accomidate your son's food allergies. This is super neat.

Yesterday, Midori's friend (Lucy) and mother committed to going with us next July on our annual Disney trip. We did a 5 hour Disney orientation with lunch. Lucy has Crohn's and this will help me assist her in meal planning. Thanks so much for your help. I will post a picture of Lucy and Midori with this post.

Oh, how we love lunch at Les Chefs! And isn't Remy totally and surprisingly adorable?! It's been a few years since our last meal there, but I sure hope we return soon.

Your review of Via Napoli is very interesting! I'm hoping to get mine up today. To find out if we enjoyed it as much as you did, please watch for my review! ;)

Two wonderful reviews of two wonderful meals - Chefs and Via Napoli :goodvibes

You have really made me want to go to Chefs as we have never tried it and I would love to see Remy :cloud9:

Lucy and Midori are adorable!! I'm glad that my reviews have been helping so that Lucy can be accommodated on your trip next July. Disney does a wonderful job keeping Philip safe and they really go the extra mile in their efforts. I feel very comfortable bringing him there, and the same goes for cruise ships...very accommodating.

When you make ADRs online, there is a section where you could check off allergies. This is what I used for our ADRs. In 2010 I had to fax a form in to them with our ADR confirmation numbers, and the allergy and name of the guest. There may be a special form to fill out in order to indicate Crohn's. So you guys might have to contact Disney to find out more about this, because you know your 180-day mark for making ADRs will be here before you know it! ;)

Oh, I have to read your review of Via Napoli! I will click on the link in your signature for your trip. And yes, I loved Remy, he was so cute. And so REAL!!!!! :rotfl2: I'm sure we will return to Les Chefs again on our next trip in 2014, but not sure if it will be for lunch or dinner...probably lunch though as we enjoy it so much and they don't have a lot of the same things at dinner.

You have really made me want to go to Chefs as we have never tried it and I would love to see Remy :cloud9:

Les Chefs is really great. Remy starts coming around at 12:30 so if you make a 12pm ADR you should see him. He only comes once to each table so if you miss him, he will not return. Also, he is not there on Sundays. But the food is so terrific, even if we didn't get to see Remy we still would have enjoyed this lunch very much. It's a place we go to for the fantastic food, and Remy is just an added bonus. In 2010 we went there for lunch and saw Remy, but I didn't tell the boys about the possibility of him being there just in case we missed him (he sometimes has technical difficulties too and doesn't make his appearance). I didn't want them to be disappointed. They were so surprised when he came out, and just in awe of him. They had asked me this time if we were going to see him again and I told them I didn't know because he's not always there. So they were very happy when he came to our table! :goodvibes

You're killing me! We've also got ADRs for Via Napoli as well as Chefs de France and I'm so excited because your meals look amazing! :cool1: Every time I think I know what I'm going to eat at these places, a fantastic review comes along and changes my mind. :lmao: The pizza & desserts look great and that bellini looks yummy too!

I also figured out what works with the lactase drops. I had three...yes...three ice cream cones this past weekend (well, one was a Blizzard from Dairy Queen) and I put 5 drops on my tongue before I ate the ice cream and 5 after and it worked amazingly well! I'm sure I could take all 10 drops at once but for some reason it sounds better in my mind to do this. My bottle is nearly empty now and I'm sad, however I ordered another bottle and it's set to be delivered before I head to WDW in one week! I think I'm going to start ordering them in bulk as well! I feel like I've been set free from my lactose intolerant chains.

I'm loving your reviews - you went to all of the same places that we are!

I missed the Via Napoli review somehow!! LOL! I'd been batting that one around for a few days and couldn't make up my mind. DS & DH are, for lack of a better word, picky about their pizza.

After reading your review and seeing the pictures, I'm thinking that this restaurant would be perfect for the both of them!! LOL!!

I'm so glad the lactase drops are working for you! I felt the same way you do...like a huge load was lifted off my shoulders and I didn't have to worry about what to eat anymore, having to give up some favorites, etc. I wish it was that easy for Philip's shellfish allergy, but we do feel fortunate that shellfish is easier to avoid than many other allergens. A friend of mine has a daughter who is allergic to both dairy and peanuts, and I know it is difficult for them but Disney always takes great care of them to keep her safe. It is very hard though for packaged foods and things like that, because certain allergens are in foods we wouldn't think they are in...we are lucky we have a solution to our problem!

One week to go until your trip!! :woohoo: You must be so excited...you must be even more excited that you can enjoy a Mickey bar or 4 on your trip! :rotfl2: Oh and if you like Dole Whips, you don't need to take your drops when you eat them (any flavor, not just the pineapple flavor)...they have no lactose in them! :thumbsup2

As a self-described pizza snob, I think Via Napoli had excellent quality pizza with wonderful taste. When I went in there, I was NOT expecting Brooklyn pizza but I was expecting great quality and for it to be delicious. And it was just that. If someone went in expecting it to taste just like NY pizza or Chicago pizza they would definitely be setting themselves up for disappointment. Everything was fresh and tasted homemade, including the sauce. It was heavely! :cloud9:

Thanks for the tips on Remy spotting :)
When I finally get to Chef's I will be sure to try for a 12pm lunch ADR
