If I wanted to buy a WDW timeshare for occasional use and another timeshare for travelling elsewhere, can somebody give me suggestions on other timesharing companies that ae reputable.

Thank you.

There are tons of things to consider when it comes to making a decision about getting into timesharing. You might want to check out the TUG ( http://tugbbs.com/forums/ ) timeshare users group site. It has a lot of info about the pros and cons and about all the different ways to timeshare. And there's lots on here about the pros and cons of the DVC system. The general advice for both is to buy where you want to stay, but lots of folks like the flexibility of various points systems.

Besides the excellent advice to read up on timesharing at TUG, or perhaps TS4Ms, the biggest piece of advice to hear is "Don't Buy Retail!!!" This applies to nearly every timeshare out there with DVC (under certain circumstances) being a rare exception to this rule. Most timeshares are readily available on resale at 70-90% off the retail pricing.

First, you need to determine where you want to vacation over the next 5-10 years. If you are able to plan a year ahead or more in most years, timeshares work better than for people who try to plan only a couple months ahead. With the general ideas of the places on your wish list, you'll be able to ask clearer questions on TUG or TS4Ms to get down to a shorter list of resorts or systems which may suit your situation. But again, don't buy retail unless you determine that it's the only way to get what you are certain you want.

Our family owns Wyndham points plus 7 weeks at various resorts, a few too many for us to use currently. We're even giving away a couple of our deeds for resorts in our home state of NC. All of our weeks were purchased resale cheaply so we can afford to do this. But you need to really know where you want to vacation and how (time of year, size units, lengths of stays, etc.) before you can consider what kind of ownership will suit your family's needs the best. HTH. :) Happy timesharing!!!

I would like to understand something.

If I buy at BLT it will cost me 34000$ for 320 points. I can either stay at BLT for one week in a one bedroom in peek season or elsewhere in Disney for less. I can also exchange through RCI for 2 weeks at one of their resorts (160 points per week). So I get two weeks elsewhere for one week at BLT. I thought this sounded like a good deal.

From my reading and researching most people say that Disney is expensive and it is not worth trading. Why????? If I were to buy elsewhere how different would the price be to get a points system that would allow me to travel one week in BLT or two weeks elsewhere.

thanks

Bluegreen, Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, Wyndham, Club Intrawest, Shell, Westin just to name a few. They are all different but all have their benefits and weaknesses.

Look at it like this. If you buy BLT at $34K plus yearly fees at $1200, that will give you a week in a 1 BR there. If you trade, you MAY get two weeks IF you get what you want and there are no more changes in the exchange options, which is a big if. OTOH, you could buy 160 BLT points and any one of many other options which would give you a LOT more other options usually at a much cheaper price. Lets look at just a few examples that I am very familiar with, the principles can be transferred to most any other system.

One is Bluegreen where you could buy say 10K points for around $2500 and get two RCI or 1.5 II trades per year with yearly fees about $650 and a free membership in RCI. Including the fact that you can often trade back into DVC. Or RCI points where one can get 50-65K points for around $1500-2500 with yearly fees of $300-500 plus RCI points membership of about $140 a year. Again, one can potentially trade back into DVC in a 1 BR at those points levels every year or a 2 BR two out of 3 years. Lastly, a trading Marriott which one can currently get for around $4-5K with with yearly fees about $700 plus II membership about $85 a year and $100 lockoff fee. That will get you three trades a year most yeas assuming you are getting a bonus week for the 1 BR deposit.

Thus for an upfront around 60% of buying all points at BLT and about the same yearly costs (give or take), you have a LOT more options and a lot better chance of actually trading to get what you want.

I find it all quite confusing. I wil look into the different options.

When you say to but RCI points, I thought we automatically had to be affiliated with an external compagny. I thought that RCI was only for trading. So that means that we can buy points directly from RCI?

RCI runs a points system similar to DVC. They have about 500 resorts in the system and you can trade across the isle to RCI weeks resorts that are not in the points system. It is a method of trading, not really different than DVC in many ways. You can either use your week or get points, your choice. Other than RCI, most members actually own to get points, if not, no reason to even have points due to the upfront and yearly costs.
