WDW Info for Today -- Charley

Lots of storm debris around WDW- branches down, leaf litter and damage to landscaping.

Parks are open (except AK) and everything seems to be up and running pretty well.

It was amazing how the wind built to a peak for about 90 minutes before the eye passed and then everything was over very quickly afterwards - except for the cleanup.

Off to MGM!

I'm sorry, but I can't get your comment out of my head.

With what this area has been through over the last 48 hours - the "not knowing," and the fear as the storm passes over...

My Uncle was in an RV park in Orlando - we finally got thru to him about an hour ago after not reaching him at all last night.

Your insensitivity just makes me sick to my stomach - I'm sorry...

Thanks for the update Doc - glad to hear that you and yours are safe and sound.

Diana...glad to see you reported in....:D ...on the news the mentioned that all orlando roads are closed to traffice, so they could get around for repairs...perhaps that's why there are no busses running...hope you have a good day....

Doc...hoping you are doing good too....:D

No offense, but that would make no sense. It would be better to run busses to the parks then have everyone taking their cars.

Give it a break . The orginal poster wasnt stating that they wished harm to any one . They made a simple remark to lighten it up atlittle. There is more things in life then to worry about what the orginal poster posted. What makes me sick is that your spinning out of control over nothing. Take a deep breath and relax.

I just spoke to friends at OKW. They said there are a few trees down, and one is on top of one of the OKW buildings on the canal. They think the surrounding palm trees softened the blow, and it's just laying there -- didn't actually break through. They didn't see much other damage, but said that it was pretty scary as it went by last night.

They took a walk down by SSR and said there are trees in the parking lots (not in their usual spots, but on the ground) and it looks as if they narrowly missed cars.

Hoping my other friends check in (Poly, SSR, and one family off property). I also have three friends who live locally -- two checked in with minor damage and one I haven't heard from. Even though I'm sure they're all okay, I'd still like to hear.

We left OKW yesterday to come back to Boston. We heard that we were the last plane to get out of Dodge before they closed the airport. (3:30 take-off, 3:40 airport closing - yikes!) Before we left, all the pool furniture was removed, the seating outside of Olivia's was gone, sandbags were in place, and they were tying up the huge light fixtures in the walkway (between Olivia's and Check-In) with rope.

Doc,
you really take this responsibility of "Webmaster" very seriously! Whenever we need any info re: the DVC whether it be SSR constuction or hurricane up dates you are the man on in the scene and in the know!

Thansk again! Oh and that is great you got the upgrade as you rough it at the GF.

Stay well.

A news report mentioned that one reason AK was shut down was to cut back on the number of CMs who had to come in. They are trying to let CMs attend to their own personal home tragedies as best they can.

Glad to hear the damage at WDW is minimal and everyone seems safe. Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda are just tragic. :(

WDW is running just fine. Buses from all resorts to Theme Parks are as usual. There is no bus transport to DD. DD opened this morning and will be open as usual, but there is no bus service from any of the resorts there.

MGM had noticeable tree damage and chain saws could be heard all around. In some cases they have just cut palms to about 3 feet and will replace them at a later time.

There are lots of uprooted trees on the golf courses and in the wooded areas near the roadways. It will take some time to get everything back to normal, but the priorities have been guest safety and getting the Theme Parks functional and cosmetic improvement will be accomplished in due time.

We've had heavy thunderstorms this afternooon, which also adds additional strain on the cleanup efforts.

Outstanding effort Doc. I hope you got to enjoy part of your time at Disney. Glad to hear that for the most part WDW was spared. Any info on AK other than it being closed today?

Thanks again and take care.

I think the AK closure is more due to safety issues. There was most likely heavy damage to landscaping that has to be attended to and animal areas need to be checked for security. No word about any extended closure.

MK is open until 11:00pm tonite, Epcot and MGM are both open until 9pm. Fantasmic, Illuminations and Wishes are scheduled for their normal times.

The resort staffs have done a great job of keeping things running smoothly. Within a week, I doubt that much residual effect from Charley will be evident anywhere at WDW.

Not to diss anyone, but Orlando is well inland and the damage nothing compared to what was experienced on west coast barrier islands. It sounds like Sanibel and Captiva will be unrecognizable. The few reports now coming out of those very natural, beautiful environments are not encouraging. There will be much habitat loss in wildlife sanctuaries. The condos and resorts are seriously damaged if not destroyed. Very sad indeed. :(

We're still working on getting down there. The auto train we had planned on was canceled today, so we will just drive the whole way down. Wish us luck driving down 95; Charley is now a tropical storm, but we're planning on taking our time and perhaps driving further inland to avoid the worst of it.:wave2:
Guess I should update my counter...but I'd rather get in the car and get going!!

Have a safe trip!! Give us lots of details when you get back home! Lots of pixie dust for your journey! :wizard:

Took the monorail from MK to Epcot this afternoon. MK was very crowded, but thinning because of rain. Lots of trees down everywhere, very noticeable in front of Epcot.

I just called Southwest a little while ago to check on the status of our flight tomorrow, and was told to call back later tonight. As you may have heard, due to damage to their terminal, Southwest is still not flying in and out of Orlando. Hope we can get home, school starts Tuesday!

Sorry to not post sooner, but going online wasn't the first thing I thought of. We were at OKW in a 2 BR (2330) until yesterday morning (Friday). We were moving to BWV for the last week of our trip yesterday. With the parks only open 8-1 yesterday, I sent the extended family off early to enjoy MK while I packed for the move. I quick call to BWV confirmed that we were OK to checkout of OKW as they guaranteed we'd have a room to move into at BWV. As I was packing the luggage and moving it into the van, the OKW staff was dropping off flashlights and moving furniture in from the decks. Mousekeeping was rushing to get rooms ready as all available rooms were being used to house Fort Wilderness guests. As I was leaving the checkout area, Disney personnel were using ropes to secure the heavy chandelier lights in the area outside the general store. Other personnel were unloading sandbags into the area near Hanks.

Our room wasn't ready when I got to BWV at 11am, but the bell staff stored the groceries and luggage. I went over to MK to meet up with our group for a bite to eat as the Boardwalk area was closing up and what was open was very busy. ESPN closed the seating line a bit after 1pm and the lines at the bakery, take-out restaurant, and Screen Door store were all very long. Thankfully I had ordered some additional groceries for the fridge from the store on Thursday when Publix was a zoo and out of bread, water and most juices. This was one time where 3x the price was OK by me. Our room was ready just after 1pm so we settled in for a quiet afternoon. We have a nice 2BR on the boardwalk side above the old DVC preview center. The front desk delivered a letter to each room with instructions to follow as Charley approached. They also posted signs in the lobby that a free box meal would be available at 5pm, but please do not congregate in the lobby for safety. Lot of kids (mine included) were quite bored by it all and roamed the halls getting to know their neighbors. It was a very friendly afternoon at BWV. In their usual Disney efficiency, the box meals were available just before 4pm. Four sandwich choices, cookies, juice boxes and sodas were spread out for all to take. The only down side to this process was human nature took over in a few cases like the gentleman taking eight sandwichs when it was just him, the wife, and two young kids. Once the first food allotment was gone, they asked that people leave the lobby and come back in an hour when more would be available. Right about this time, the second wave of heavy showers and lightning hit. From 5pm to 7pm, the staff brought out more and more food which now included chicken strips for the kids and lots of cookies. One CM in community hall today was remarking that they couldn't believe BWV didn't have chicken strips for lunch today (her favorite). My kids told her that they were the hit of the night before with the kids and that most likely were all used up feeding the guests. After 7pm, the hotel common areas got real quiet as most people went to their rooms to watch the storm's progress. The local TV stations were spot on and the storm hit with a fury after 8pm. You could barely see the boardwalk lights at the peak. After 9pm, the eye of the storm passed over and it got eerily calm. You could see the Epcot ball all lit up in the distance. We got some light rains and winds a bit later, but the storm really didn't have much of a backlash thankfully. The front desk sent a message to all rooms at 6:50am that Disney was syrveying the resort and parks for damage and would provide an update shortly. At 7:15am, they left a second update that MK, Epcot, and MGM would be open at 9am and BB at 10am. A quick walk around the boardwalk showed that the BW Inn lost a few roof shingles, lots of leaves and grass clippings were on the walks, a few weeping willows on the Epcot bridge were broken and a large palm near the Swan bridge had fallen neatly on the grass next to the canal. Disney asked that guests drive to the parks and parking charges were waived. Despite this, I still saw a lot of buses moving around the resort. We walked over to Epcot and it was packed when we got there just before 11am. The fast passes for Test Track were for 3:40 to 4:40pm. Unfortunately, that was when the rains came and the ride was closed for safety reasons. We came back to the hotel to eat and then a few of the older kids wanted to go to DD. I drove them over and then went to OKW to work out. The SSR buildings near the road looked like they held up well. Some scaffolding looked to be tilting and a few sections of the fence looked like they bent as the winds hit them, but overall I didn't see any major damage to the five building being constructed along the road. Upon entering OKW and driving around it a bit, a few trees were leaning or down, but not too many. Building 54 was getting a new roof last week and it looked like that held up well despite being only 90% complete from external appearances. The parking lots around the buildings were quite empty. I wonder how many weekend arrivals were still delayed? The work out room had wet carpet in the back area as water had come in under the door on the parking lot side. The outdoor ping pong table was still folded up in the massage area, but most of the other outside items were back in place. All in all, OKW seems to have weathered the storm well. All of the parks look to be open tomorrow based on channel 19's park information. Channel 6 said that Orlando International is still only at a third of the normal schedule, but that they expect to be back to 100% by Tuesday. It was a stroke of luck that Orlando and central Florida got through the hurricane with no deaths. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the people in Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte who weren't so lucky.
