The subject of high school nicknames came up today at work.

My friends used to call me Ignatz, after the mouse in Krazy Kat.

For some reason, I could never understand, they thought that Ignatz and I had similar temperments.

I've never heard of Krazy Kat, but I do see the similarities :lmao:

STILL no rain in sight (sorry all of you who've been getting lots of rain), and it's going to be a BEAUTIFUL day! SUMMER IS FINALLY HERE because it will be our first day in the 90sF. :cool1: BEAUTIFUL!!!! It won't be so fun to mow my yard today in it, but it's good exercise, so I don't mind. :goodvibes

No surgery for Dad today after all - not sure exactly what happened except that the people (insurance?) who are providing the stint are "dragging their feet" (using words my parents used). Dad is heading into the hospital now to see what (if anything) can be done to speed things up.

Not Deborah, but Keith is just visiting the high school he will be moving to in September now he is 11. I believe his school closes for summer vacation at the end of next week.

Schools here finish 2 weeks later. Our grandaughter is visiting her new high school for 1 day before then.

It is just part of the induction.

Wow, I always forget that English schools are so much different from ours. Are Keith and your granddaughter going to what we would call "private" schools (where the parents pay extra for the student to attend)? Is that why they have to be inducted? Do they have to go in front of the board or something?

Our high schools start at about age 14...after the kids have been in school for about 8 or 9 years.....

I'll bet your high schools are about what we would call "middle school".

so interesting!!!:flower3:

No, not private, just the normal moving on at 11, after being at Primary school for 6(ish) years. They have to choose which school(s) they would like to go to and submit a form at the beginning of their final year at Primary school. They heard at the beginning of March which school they had been successful in getting into as it isn't a done deal as good schools get more people applying. Our grandaughter, and grandson as well, both got the schools they wanted.

They are at these schools till 16, or can stay on to do Advanced Level exams at 18 and then go on to University etc.

When our own children were at school many school authorities had a First(5 - 9yrs), Middle(9 - 13yrs), and Upper(13 - 16/18yrs), brought in around30 years ago. This was really great for the children as Middle schools were much smaller than the Upper schools, so more personal, and they did a kind of gradual change in teaching methods over the 4 years to be more like the Upper school way. However it wasn't too popular with the Upper school teachers who only had 1 year to get all the children coming from different Middle schools at a similar level before starting exam work. So at enormous expense they changed it all back.

The induction is just a way of helping them adjust to the very large new school.

Folks must be pretty pleased that there's no 11+ anymore!

I hope things can get organized for him soon. :)

That seems similar to Holland, where they pick which level of high school they will go to (academic(heading to university), moderate (heading to college) or trades). In my Canada, some areas have primary, middle and high school, and some have just primary and highschool. If we stay in our town, the girls will go to one school for Kindergarten (5yo) to grade 7 (12yo) then to a different school for grade 8-12. Inside the high school, they pick which classes they take, which affect what they can do after graduation.

Oh yes, though there are still one or two authorities who have the 11+!!!

Our High Schools, on the whole, cater for everyone, academic or less so. If you can pay then there are high achieving academic schools to try for. Then you have top top end or Public Schools, but you really have to have money to go there.

In the days of 11+, which I took, if you passed you went to Grammar School which was more academic, and if you didn't pass you went to Secondary which was more for trades etc, though many had a 'Grammar School stream' for those higher achieving.

Wow, how's this for timing.......I was thinking of your dad at lunch and planned on calling you this evening to ask what the status is on his surgery! Thanks for the update. I really hope they can take care of him quickly, good grief!

It's interesting to hear about how all the different school systems operate. Around here, elementary school is Kindergarten through 6th grade, middle school is 7th and 8th, high school is 9th through 12th. But I believe that varies by state. And ones school district is determined by where one lives, unless you opt to do "school of choice". Any school accepting "school of choice" kids will have an application and you find out mid summer if you're selected. Being selected mainly is determined by whether they have room to accomodate you.

School for me was
Kindergarden
Elementary=1st thru 6th
Junior High= 7th thru 9th
Highschool= 10th thru 12th

Now its 9th thru 12th for highschool

This has been a long day. My brain is fried and is ready to shut down. And my stomach did NOT appreciate the salami sandwich I had for lunch today. I know, not WW, but was just a craving. After work I have to mow, then clean the guinea pigs' cage, then set up an online catalog jewelry sale e-mail. My head is pounding, so hopefully I get all of that done very early and will head to bed early. :thumbsup2

1-3 grade was my failing attempt to attend Catholic School....

4-6 was at Eastbrook Elementary - where apparently I had cooties cause I didn't start in Kindergarden there... :sad2:

6-12th was at Park Ridge High School... where I pretended to be very shy :lmao:

then when I was 21 I quit a full time job and put myself through college... :hippie:

I hope it doesn't turn into a full blown migraine Holly.

It's started to head that way. I think I'm going to just drop Tyler's stuffed animals at his dad's for him on my way home and just hop into bed and forget everything else for today.

Good idea. I was wondering how your migraines were getting on so sad to hear you are still suffering. Did you get those meds you mentioned?

Oh, I don't get them very often. Once a week at most. No, I didn't get the good meds. Since I now have insurance, I called and asked the doctor if he could write me a new prescription for that drug, and the office told me there's no record of me being prescribed that med. I didn't have time or even want to deal with trying to get that worked out, but it's OK because the preventative med does a really good job for me. And when I do get one, it only lasts a day and it's rarely debilitating. Much, much better. :thumbsup2

glad to hear they are better. I was plagued by one last week and thoutgh of you, I hope I didn't send it your way :sad2:

long day today. started early (for me during summer) out the door at 9:30 with my sister and mom to attend a funeral for an old neighbor. Since I live in the house I grew up in and lots of the neighbors are still here we still all support each other that way. This neighbor & family actually moved away many years ago but since we all "grew" up together we still felt very close. It was sad and hard to go, but you do these things for the family and I'm glad I did.

My mom has such a hard time from moment to moment remembering what is going on. She knew we attended the service, but kept asking us who sat next to her and held her hand...It was my dad's best friend, my current neighbor across the street. He is 84 and out everyday puttering around his house. He and I talk every so often and reminice about my dad. It sucks getting old. :sad2:
