I ONLY stick around because of the flexibility they've always given me. I put up with their unethical ways because I need that flexibility. And that's partially why I have Friday night get-togethers with my co-workers and former co-workers. Us current employees get to vent, and the former co-workers always want to hear the latest chaos stories. 
It IS wrong. That's just the kind of place I work for.
And I sort of like stirring the pot. So I told the girl who was just let go that they're interviewing to hire somebody. And about a year ago, when the office manager told me they were going to fire the only female attorney in a couple hours, I TOLD HER, so she would have time to compose herself so she wouldn't bust out crying. The other attorneys were surprised at how well she handled the news. She later told me she appreciated me telling her because it gave her time to think of some not so nice final parting words.
the only reason in CA to not get unemployment is if you are fired with cause. Drinking on the job is cause. I've had to fight a claim for a client on that level before.
It really is better than firing her over the drinking, as she might not get to claim the unemployment that way.
