Do the kids clubs only call/message the wave phone when your kiddo is ready to go? We will likely be using the navigator app so we will all have our phones. Our son is 8 and he does not have one. Will we also be required to carry the wave phone because he's in the club? I'm considering giving him an old phone or iPod and teaching him messaging through the app. Surely they'll message us using the app, right? He's a new 8 and we will likely not give him self checkout privileges.

Kids clubs call the wave phone only. However the wave phone is a very old style phone and the navigator app on a smart phone is far superior.

So you need to have one wave phone with you, unless you ask them , it would be easy for them to do it, it's just your " number" allocated on the Navigator App.

If you give him a phone maybe get can message you on the navigator app?

That's what I was thinking. I'd much rather not have to carry the wave phone, as well as ours. (First world problems, I know!) I was hoping they could just message us through the app. The app is new since we last cruised.

My son doesn't have experience messaging, and I can't teach him the app, but we could try once we get onboard. It'll definitely be a device on it's last legs that I wouldn't mind if it got lost!

If he can send a text on a droid or iPhone he'll be able to use the app without a problem.

I would have him practice typing and "sending" a simple message on the old device. That way he is familiar with the device and his simple message (like "come get me").

You don't have to use the wave phone, but if the kids club need to contact you for any reason it's gonna be the WP. The computer system doesn't work with the app yet. So if you're happy with the kids club not being able to contact you that's fine, but if they have any questions, your kid gets hurt, your kid has an accident, your kids loses or breaks their phone (which unfortunately does happen), or if anything else happens that means your kid can't contact you, they're gonna use the wave phones...

And that's exactly why I was asking. I'm definitely not comfortable with him being the only source of contact! I'd rather carry both our phones. I definitely want them to be able to reach us. Thank you!

You'll have two wave phones and messages should go to both, so you'll only need to carry one with you. They also work on castaway cay if you're going there...

Thoughts...
  • check your wave phone to ensure it works.... I didn't realize my wave phone ringer was broken until the last day. I missed a lot of messages.
  • my wave phone kept popping off my belt when I sat down. The spare tire wasn't enough to hold it in place.
  • research the cost to replace a lost wave phone.
  • texting messages on the wave phone is painful
  • after entering your contact information on the wave phone.... I could not find a way to delete it.
  • I found it was too easy to butt dial another cabin on the wave phone.

I call it nostalgic ;) Seriously though, I have texted clients with my business flip phone and it reminds me to be thankful for touch screens. I am impressed, however, by how quickly I fall right back in to it and just start typing away without much extra thought.

A lot of wave phones are set to silent as a courtesy to other guests (e.g. shows, movies, dinner...), but there is a vibrate option.

You can also lock the phone to avoid butt dials.

Do it.

The CMs won't contact you through the Navigator app.

And honestly their methods of communication don't work that well in our experience. We've gotten messages WAY later. They've called the room (where the voice message was) instead of the wave phones.

I've liked having my son have his old, no-SIM, Samsung so he could text when he was ready to go.

thanks for the tip on the phone lock.

I did take the phone to guest services.... they could not get the phone to vibrate or ring either.

Any phones or iPods we have are old enough that they don't have a great battery but we do have a portable charger. My husband asked if we could get a burner phone....would that work? Does it just need to be android/apple and get on wifi?

I would just use the old stuff you have. How long will he be in the club/lab, after all?

Well, based on 4 years ago...not much at all. But based on how he plays now, he'll always be there!! Our daughter went at 5, 7 & 12 and we had to drag her away. At 4 he wasn't like that but I think he will be at 8! We will take something but not rely on it!
