water in POTC boats still an issue! (small rant)

No one is surprised if they get wet, they are surprised when they get soaked.
^^This, exactly. I wasn't surprised that most of my boat was wringing-wet when we rode last month, only because I'd been reading about this new "add-on" on the DIS. I warned my friends, too, and we all took measures to protect our valuable electronics. Had we not known, a bunch of expensive phones may have been destroyed. That simply is NOT the POTC most of us have been riding for decades, so yeah - surprising!

Well if everyone stays away from the ride from fears of getting wet....then shorter lines for me. Yay! pirate: :thanks:

Would you feel differently if you suddenly got completely soaked on it?
No, getting soaked doesn't bother me. In fact, I enjoy it. Usually my wife and I try to ride Splash as much as possible. But I get that other people don't feel the same. I guess it comes down to to the same thing as Splash Mountain or even Kali...if you don't like something about it, you aren't being forced to ride it. But I guess, in the end, my point is that I've ridden POTC a lot since I started seeing the complaints and still to this day have never witnessed this issue. If I suddenly got soaked on...let's say Living with the Land, I would be surprised, but I wouldn't complain...I might bring it to their attention as it could be a maintenance issue, but let's be honest, it's not like we wear our nice clothes to the parks, right? ^_^

Getting wet on a freezing cold day does bother me. That's why I don't ride Splash or Kali when it's cold. I'm willing to take a chance on POTC when I do head down to Disney at the end of this month, because I realize that the soaking doesn't happen to everyone. But I will bring flip flops to wear on the ride just in case. And if I got soaked riding on Living with the Land, I would complain.

Another splash update. We rode Tuesday morning. Last row of a lightly loaded boat. The only water I got was a few drops from the cannon splash.

My family has been going almost yearly since 1996, rode potc at least 5or6 times every trip, would expect a little splash now and then but never worried about getting soaked... I didn't go this year but DW and DD'S did.. Hadn't seen any of post's so they didn't think about getting wet, front row DW on right side DD's on her left, DD's got more soaked than they have ever gotten on splash mountain. and all at once my wife has water over the top of her shoes, which by the way are very expensive ortho shoes that she would have normally taken off for splash or kali... POTC has all ways been a BOAT RIDE, has never been a get soaked water ride, I expect to get wet on splash or Kali, you don't expect to on POTC cause in 20 years we never have, something is definitly wrong!!!!

Would you say the same for Disney Cruise Line?

We did not get the least bit wet on Saturday evening when we rode it, or on Sunday. Our boat had three smaller people in the front, but the rest of the boat was packed shoulder to shoulder people and I was very worried. I was is about three quarters of the way back

Several other people coming off the boats just after us were soaked, Just from casual observation I would say it is due to the heavy weight load in the boats at times.

Unfortunately, the majority of Americans today are overweight and over a third are obese. Putting four 200 pound people shoulder to shoulder in a boat so that it rides very low is probably going to cause problems with those little dinky boats.

I think that we can be sensitive to not overfilling the boats without hurting people's feelings. My thought is that the cast members were told to reduce the wait times and load the boats as much as they can.

We road it twice last week and no one got wet on either ride. However, I did see people coming off wet and a big clue was there was a large amount of water on the walkway exiting the ride. It was obviously there due to people dripping. I have no doubt that there are prople getting seriously wet.

PotC is a boat ride...not a water ride. Just like Small World, Grand Fiesta Tour and Living with the Land.

I don't agree 100%. POC has a drop where the water splashes you and it also has cannons going off that splash water at you. Small World, Living with the land and Grand Fiesta are just level slow boat rides.

Totally agree with this! POTC is a "water ride".....its not the same but its almost like complaining about getting wet on splash mountain!

For the record, I rode POTC a few times about a month ago and had no issues...and i had sandals on. Im not saying the floor was bone dry, but there was minimal water on it...and i didnt get wet at all.

I'm sorry, but I disagree that POTC should be considered to be like Splash. I rode it for *years* without ever having to worry about getting Splash Mtn. soaked. I don't ride Splash Mtn. because I don't *like* getting that wet. I've always ridden POTC multiple times/trip and have never before gotten as wet as I have on Splash Mtn. This is new, and an indication that there's something amiss.

Wow, some people just deny and deny no matter what. I've ridden POTC many times too and I have never seen anyone get soaked. This is a new thing.

I've ridden many boat rides over the years at WDW and you learn which rides might get you wet. This one never did before. Denying that it happens or that somehow any ride with a tiny slope can drench people doesn't change the fact that this ride didn't used to do this.

I've been keeping up with this thread for awhile and I don't have much to add except that it's my favorite ride and I'm kinda scared to take the chance of getting wet but I can't pass it up! Mostly because my WDW trips are few and in between so it's almost non-optional. I will be requesting the back row though. Thank you all for great advice on how to brave this awesome but soggy ride.

Falling out :lmao: you'd have to be really drunk or just plain stupid to fall out. I see your point. But I still think one should not be surprised if they get wet on a ride that involves water somehow.

That's not entirely true. I very nearly fell out 5 years ago and I was stone cold sober and sitting as instructed - unfortunately the CM choose to put my family of 5 ranging in age from 25-55 into one row. I was seated on the outside and as we made a left hand turn our boat bumped the rail and I almost toppled out of the boat my mother grabbed me and we sat with our arms around each other's shoulders for the rest of ride so that we were closer together.

Our family of four rode last night. As it turned out, we should have been in the first row- I asked to sit in the second row and glad I did! The family who got seated there did in fact get soaked. We had some minor splashing. There was definitely water standing in the bottom of the boat- I had on sandals and my feet were obviously soaked as well, my family members were all wearing sneakers that got damp. Considering it was a chilly evening, I was glad I have been reading these boards and asked for the second row! That poor family was not happy!

As I've said (I think to you?) before...Maelstrom had a drop in it too and nobody got soaked on that ride. And, let's not be difficult about this...PotC has been in operation for 42 years (happy birthday on December 15th in fact) and up until recently nobody has ever reported getting soaked to the bone on the ride. Something is clearly wrong.

And frankly, it's a ride with no height restriction, so folks can take toddlers and infants on the ride. Do you honestly insist that Disney contends (or intends) that it is okay for infants to get soaked?

I am forced to wonder how new this is, though. I am not denying the comments on the boards. Just from personal experience:
Past 8 years I have ridden PotC maybe 20+ times, I have never gotten more than a few drops including after the refurb.
On the other hand, 30 years ago I remember getting horribly soaked on the ride at least twice. And that was when the cannon shots were nothing at all - it was mainly from that first drop. However I was in the front of the boat back then and although I was a skinny kid, there was a bit of weight on the front and not as much on the back.
Those were the old boats, though which were supposedly not weighted as well as the new ones. .

Add us to the list of people who got soaked when we rode in October - we were in the front row and got hit by a wave of water over the front of the boat on the drop and there was water coming over the edge of the boat during another part of the ride too. We were wet enough that we were ringing our shirts out. Wasn't expecting it at all and it put a damper (no pun intended) on the rest of our evening as it was quite cool out.

Maybe Disney went with this "you may get wet" option after all the complaints of flash photography on the ride... everyone will tuck their cameras away to avoid the chance of them getting wet! Fix one problem, create another... pirate::rolleyes:

I had no idea this was a standing problem. We were at WDW Oct 1. When we very first got in the boat (first row and I was the first person stepping on) there was already standing water. I wish I had a picture because my pants got wet above my sneakers. I didn't get splashed at all during the ride but the water inside the boat was sloshing around a lot.

I assumed there had been some sort of mishap and mentioned it stepping off and the CM said thanks for telling them. Guess it wasn't unique.
