Wash Your Dishes

I live dangerously, if it is not visibly dirty I just go with it. I figure if I don't I am messing with Karma and I will walk out the door only to get hit by a Disney bus. But I will say this, I don't over do the germ killing thing, I wash my hands, wash plates that are visibly dirty and I have never gotten sick in over 25 years of going to Disney.

Besides I try to be as green as possible and rewashing all those dishes on the chance they are not clean is too much for me and never would I fill the landfills with more disposables to keep from running one load of dishes. :thumbsup2

I agree! I am not a Germaphobe. If it looks dirty - wash it. Otherwise I use it:laughing:

Personally, I wouldn't wash the dishes myself, but my DW definitely does. She unpacks and organizes the whole room and always keeps the room in tip top shape even when staying CRO in a regular hotel. (the housekeepers don't have much to do in our room). My DM is even more nuts on germs. Mom always packs cleaning supplies and cleans the toilet upon arrival.:confused3

I am a total germaphobe but I do not wash dishes that otherwise look perfectly clean. I DO take antibacterial wipes and wipe down door handles, phones, remotes, etc - but I am not going to re-wash dishes that appear to be fine.
I might start bringing my own dishwasher detergent though, b/c that stuff they give you in the villas doesn't do a great job.

While we definately do not wash all the dishes, I will rinse out the glasses and rinse off the dishes before using. Look, I don't know who's touched them, how long they've been in the cabinet. Not everyone uses the dishes! I actually know of one family who brings paper plates and cups!

Me too.

If I ever find dirty dishes upon arrival? I will call Mousekeeping and let them do them. I'm sorry, there's no excuse for a room to be left in that condition.

This brings up a question I always wondered about. What is the DVC rule on what mousekeepers do with dishes in the cabinet between guests? Are they supposed to take every dish and glass out and wash it? Inspect every dish and glass for obvious signs of dirt and wash those? I've seen so many dishes that LOOK clean maybe they were used for a muffin, crumbs dumped or wiped and the dish returned, apparently clean but not really. And I've seen silverware wiped on jeans and returned to the silverware drawer. Those look OK to mousekeeping. So what's mousekeeping really supposed to do?

Does it really matter? What gets done and what they are suppose to do can be two different things. They are suppose to clean the rooms between Guests and sometimes that doesn't seem to happen very well.

A few days ago when we checked into BLT, our room wasn't ready until almost 5 PM. First thing that we noticed is that the trash wasn't emptied.

I say don't take a chance... wash your dishes. :thumbsup2

No, it doesn't matter. I just askeed because I was curious if anyone had the answer.

I didn't want others readers to think that the following services happen every time a room is turned over. :goodvibes

  • Provide fresh bathroom linens.
  • Replace shampoo, facial soap and bath soap.
  • Replenish facial tissues, paper towels and toilet paper.
  • Replenish coffee, sugar, cream and sweeteners.
  • Replenish dishwashing liquid, dishwashing detergent, sponges and laundry detergent as needed in one-, two- and three-bedroom Vacation Homes.
  • Change the bed linens.
  • Vacuum and dust the Vacation Home.
  • Clean the bathroom(s).
  • Clean the kitchen/kitchenette and wash the dishes.

I don't know what they are supposed to do but I've always assumed they don't have time to inspect the dishes in the cupboard. If a guest left dirty dishes in the sink I expect that mousekeeping would put those dishes in the dishwasher and run it. If the previous guest started up the dishwasher when they vacated the room, I expect mousekeeping would empty it and put the dishes back in the cupboard. I just don't think they have time to do any more than that.

I buy disposable cups, plates, utensils. I don't want to be bothered with worrying over germs plus I don't want to do dishes while on vacation.

Same here. :thumbsup2 Heck, I don't like having to do dishes at home so I REALLY don't want to on vacation. More than I have to anyway. :thumbsup2 I'll most likely immediately put stuff I expect to have to use like glasses in the washer immediately and just run it. Thanks for the heads up.

lol I thought the point of booking at a deluxe was so you didn't have to eat like an animal on paper plates like every where else?

To each his/her own. Then I guess we're animals in our own home too. :confused3 That wasn't the point WE bought into DVC for.

So, I guess I'll never pay for extra mousekeeping. Seems to be a waste of money.

I've traveled quite a bit over the last 30 years. While, I assumed rooms were cleaned between guests...I've never obsessed about it. If it's visibly dirty...I'll call to have it cleaned.

Really....what are they supposed to do? I would expect there are some standards and/or requirements. It they do no more than I ....why do they show up?

Oh and if you do this while bathing you are saving water. We all know how important water conservation is.
The jet are great for getting toe jam and belly button fuzz off of the glasses.

I usually do the dishes when I'm in the whirlpool bath. That way, the jets get everything super clean for the next person.
