We just got back from a European trip. I never knew this, but I guess wash cloths aren't commonly available in a hotel room? We had to keep calling down to Housekeeping and while they graciously gave us some, they didn't replentish them daily. Every day when the room was serviced, there were none left. We had to hide them so that we'd have some. :lmao: Is this customary throughout Europe? I thought everyone used washclothes for showers, washing your face, etc. Is this strictly an American custom?

I think that most people consider them a very intimate and personal item and, therefore, prefer to use their own.

When you travel do you bring your own washclothes from home?

I've never been to Europe so I can't answer the OPs question...but I just assume that everyone would get wahsclothes no matter where they were.

I don't use them in the shower (I use the puffs with body wash) but I do use them to wash my face.

Yes we do.
Also we do not provide them to people who rent our vacation home in Florida and that is decided by our management company who even state it on their website.

I travel to Germany 5 - 6 times per year and have never seen a wash cloth. I also do not like the "body wash" in the showers, so I always take a bar of soap.

That is so interesting! I honestly never thought of that aspect (about how they are personal items) I guess I'm just used to having them available all the time at hotels here.

I do know a lot of wekly rental places do not supply linens of any kind (sheets, towels etc) I always figured it was because they had too many being stolen from those places.

See, I learn something new every day here! Now I know if I ever can afford to travel to Europe that I should bring my own with me.

I'm guessing you're talking about what we would call flannels here!

Depends where in Europe you go...

We always have them left daily with clean towels in Spain, Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Majorca.

We always pack our own, but have on occasion used the ones provided too.

.

They're called flannels? Wow...never heard that name before. What I'm referring to is a small handheld towel - about 5 inches by 5 inches square. I would have never thought to bring my own as they're provided in every single hotel that I've ever stayed in here in the States. I didn't realize that it was considered so personal that a hotel wouldn't provide them. At first I thought it was just bad, lazy Housekeeping! :rotfl2: By the way, for the record, this wasn't a hostel or low budget hotel where perhaps not all ammenities were provided - it was a mega resort.

I usually bring the disposable Dove face cloths and use them for whatever...

Yes, thats them. As you can see some countries do provide them. :)

What country were you in?

Most Europeans do not use washcloths, so most hotels do not commonly place them in rooms. American-based chains and hotels in high tourist areas may. At least that's what I was told years ago by a TA when she booked an overseas trip for us.

And yes, in the British Isles, a washcloth/facecloth is called a flannel.

My family just spent 1 week in London and 1 week in Paris. No, no wash cloths but certainly plenty of hand towels and bath towels. Just use a hand towel instead of a face cloth. That is what we did!! No biggie!! :)

We stayed in an hotel in Budapest Hungary that catered to American's and there were no washcloths. We were told before we went (HVYC Chorale Trip) to bring them with us as they are not provided.

The other interesting fact was that if you were out and needed to use the water closet - you had to pay to use it.

Yep, I've learned to take them with me to Europe....just in case. That and a bar of soap because I prefer that over some of the gels.

Kellydizfan, I'm going to Budapest this summer...glad to know about the water closets. It's not always this way in some of the other countries.

We used to have pay toilets here too...I remember having to put a dime in to open the door.

no washcloths in Germany unless it's a hotel aimed at American or international tourists. I never used one and even now only use one for spot removal on clothes.

We do use the net type sponges that one sees at Body Shop, Bath and Bodyworks, etc.

and it used to be common to pay for the toilet AND to retrieve toilet paper before entering the stall. We always carried pocket packs of tissues with us just in case.

Plus there are approximately 62 different ways to flush a toilet in Europe ;)

we always bring our own for reasons mentioned :) but when i've been to Europe i didn't even realize they were not in the room!
