Warriors Bouncing into Spring

Not too sure about the shoulder thing. I would say tensing up and holding up your shoulders is not good and yes, the back probably hurts after awhile. When doing racewalking I was always told think "elbows to the ground" and separate your ears from your shoulders. You probably will have to do some real thinking about this for awhile until it "feels" more comfortable. Elbows at about a 90 degree angle should help. I would also suggest going to the MONTHLY Wish thread and just pop in and ask for suggestions, really, as the more imput you get the better. I am not much of a "runner" so my arm position has been trained from racewalking.

Good luck.

Got out on Wednesday for a nice bike ride!! Had a good outting at the Dump and felt very "trashy" with my dirt lines around the socks! :lmao:

Michelle, sounds like you are just getting into all kinds of good stuff!!

Got a 10K tomorrow, so we'll see how it goes.

Have a good weekend everyone!

Tracy

Tracy best of luck for the 10k- come on we'll send you the WISH spirit, you just pump those legs :)

Michelle I love reading your training reports, no one could make me feel more lazy and motivated than you! Hope your shoulders recover!

Pam the best running revelation i had was when using a camelbak for the first time. Holding the tube (which you probably shouldn't do) forced me to keep my arms lower and stopped me from hunching. Made the world of difference. i was told to keep shaking out my arms if they get tight as it would cause a sore neck! Spot on i guess. My only advice would be try to keep your shoulders relaxed and arms pointing straight forward, not across your body. Feels strange at first, but i guess it's just playing around with things.

Lily busy life always dictates and if you're getting done what you can then hold your head up high! Dress wearing was fun- i hate leaving it at the shop, that one's not even mine.... in 5-8months my one will be in! He he he

Amanda how you getting on?

me was planning a run today, but had to walk the mum! She's going crazy with dad refusing to go for walks so i went with her for a short one.Ended up being near 7 miles!!!! took 2 hours!!!! Have to admit was lovely, but had totally inappropriate shoes on- fit flops! Nice bonding time. Will make up the run tomorrow. Shins holding up so far :woohoo:

Happy Sunday to everyone! Completed the Martian Half in Dearborn yesterday and had a good event. It was fun to meet up with some of the WISHers who were able to make this event.

Michelle, hope the shoulders feel better.

Pam, seems like you've got some good suggestions about the arms and trying to remember to relax your shoulders. I think adding some strengthening exercises would help. Also, I've experimented with trying to not swing too much forward, accross the front. Rather focus on the back swing to help propel yourself forward. I think Tracy has give a great start point.

Kate, you are such a good daughter for walking with your Mum.

Tracy, from the looks of your FB pic, I'd say your event went well!

Lily, great work on the Martian!! Loved the photo and reports from DianeL.!!

Michelle, how are you feeling these days?

Katie, we will need photos at some point!! and thanks for the virtual cheers from across the pond.

Pam, how is that back and arms doing?

AFM; My 10k went pretty well this morning. I met up with Tricia from WISH and Carra from ROTE. We all did a good race today. Weather was humid as it had rained the night before and was threatening during the race. Stayed cloudy for all of it and that was helpful, but first race of the year that I carried my little sweat rag. First race trying out my jog 1 min and racewalk 7 min. Finished in 1 hour 16 min and 46 sec for an average pace per mile of 12:24. Now if I can keep that pace up for a half (and not do a pit stop)!!

Have a good Sunday evening Warriors!!

STill have a sore spot just between the shoulder blade and back bone- wish I had a car today- I'd take it to the chiropractor. Unfortunately, DH needs my car (as his sprung an oil leak after the radiator fix last week LOL). So for now heat and ibuprofen are my friends. If it's not better I will get to the chiropractor on Wed- which will be my first chance since I have a job tomorrow and a track meet to work at after school.

Amanda - You wil not sleep teh night before teh half adn will be filled with adrenaline. Your not-so-great run by no means means you won't do well in the half. :grouphug:

Pam -Hope teh back is better. Yoga has helped me learn to relax my shoulders. Plus, I get a pain in my back when my core is out fo shape. Just somethign else to try if the back does not let up.

Tracy -Yay fro the fun race with Tricia!

Kate - Hope you did not do to omuch damage. Glad you emnjoyed the walk, though!

Lily -Again, just loved seeing you this weekend! Just wha the doctor ordered!

Michelle - You know it's my duty to tell you to be careful and not overdo it, right? :rolleyes1

Kathy - The speed will come1 SO imrpessed by how far you've already come!

Had fun at Martian. Was pleased with my pace, as it imporved from Princess. SOmehow, though, my chip time was 6 min faster (not possible, as I shoudl ahve had chip time on my Garmin adn my Garmin auto pauused when I did blister fixes). Wish it was true.

headed to Cinci from tehre. FDon't want to do Flying Pig any more. :scared1: Holy hills Batman! Ahhh well, friedns will be there, including Pam!

Will swim tonight adn do a tri symposium tomorrow. That counts as trainig, right? :rotfl: Hope Ican move is swim tonight. Half marathon, then 4 hours in teh car, 18 hours of sitting (or sleeping) and 7+ more in the car is not the best recovvery program.

Have a great week everyone!

I didn't mean to disappear! We were at Disney for the weekend for a work conference. No kids! It was totally awesome. Too much food, too much wine, and not enough sleep which doesn't help my training but it was SO worth it! We got home at 1am this morning and I was back at work at 8am.

I got back into my training today. I actually picked up the pace and found it easier than the slower pace. Weird, right? I went 2.37 miles in 35 min. I need to increase my run time to 28 min later this week. It felt good though.

I'm glad to hear that adrenaline will get me through the half! I need it!!! I'm usually a morning person so that should help, too.

Quick question: Where should we stay for the half? We're loving the Epcot resorts but I was thinking it would be easier on our families (3 little kids and 3 grandparents) if we stay at a monorail resort. Any opinions?

Thanks all!
Amanda

I forgot to add... My 6 year old told me tonight that he hopes I "win" my race in January. :lmao: I need to spend some time explaining that I just hope to finish....

Amanda

Happy Tuesday Warriors!!

It's been a few days, so here's the new JimB. update ( I just KNOW you've been waiting....).

Was in Dayton, Oh for the last week. My DD was competing in the WinterGuard International World Championships. Her group ( the Gainesville Independent Winterguard) made finals & finished 10th (out of 57) & got promoted to the next highest class. For a guard that has only been in existence for 2 years, it was a truly wonderful accomplishment. Now she has to decide whether to come back next year or join the real world & get ready for Grad School (guess which one it will be........:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: ).

My DD & I stayed over an extra day so that I could participate in the Ohio River Road Runners Club (ORRRC for short) 1/2 M in Xenia, Ohio on Sunday. It was the SMALLEST race I have ever done (about 700 people participating total), but it was very well staged. Nice route through town then out & in on a really nice bike path system (note: This area of the planet has a GREAT series of bike paths. Miles & miles & miles of them!!!!! Color me jealous). I finished in 2:14. Slow, but considering my personal circumstances, I was happy with it. I would really like to be in the 2:00 - 2:05 range consistently. Maybe someday......

My feet did ok. My knees ached pretty bad afterwards (but not during, which is new. Maybe still getting used to the new inserts). My back was not great. I tanked myself up on Tylenol the night before & that morning, which probably helped.

This was my 1st run in 2 weeks, due to being out from a spring cold. I now know that Goofy is many, MANY hundreds of miles down the road, but I'm anxious to get started.

This week: Therapy today & thursday & a follow-up with the Dr. on Friday. Ugh. Hoping for (but not counting on) some favorable options that do not involve very sharp blades & months off from work.

You guys all rock!!

Jim - OMG. I forgot that you were going to be in OH! I passed right through thDAyton on Saturday. :headache: I would nto have had time to stop anyway, as we were off to CInci to see SIL (dh's littlest sis) aafter knee surgery adn only stayeed overnight. Still, so close, yet so far. We passed some vehicles that said WGIC champs. I thought they were "Indiana" champs comint htere fro nationals, but it sounds liek they may have been international champs. If only we had known we were sharign teh highway with stars... lol. Huge congrats to your dd! Glad you had a nice weekenda dn a fun race. Thosse small ones can be great.

Amanda - I am NOT a mornign person either, so adrenaline will do even more for you. NO help on the hotels. ia m guesssing monorail will be easiest, but have never stayed at one.

Have I mentioend that I have the greatestt yoga instructor in the world?????? She saw on Facebook that I did a half Saturday adn planned a session to help my muscles fully recover. Talk about above adn beyond! She's awesome! I have truely been blessed with the fitness people I have found lately (or that I was directed to). :cloud9:

Jim, I kind of like those smaller events. Only thing is they are usually faster. I've been picking the ones lately that have a full so I can finish behind most of the full participants while doing the half. I've actually gone on the paths you speak bike riding with my GF last year and will be heading there this summer.

Amanda, pick any of the monorail resorts or others for that matter. All will get you to the start and back. I don't recommend one over the other. Rather, you might pick somewhere, you haven't stayed for the fun of it.

Carrie, seems like you have a great Yoga instructor!

Pam, hope you can get the shoulder pain figured. I like the idea Carrie offered about the Yoga and core strengthening (Pilates).

I have been doing a lot of yard work for XT. That's about it these few days.

Hi Warriors!

Just dropping in to say hi quickly! Life has been insane the last few weeks! We moved into our new house last week (which is AWESOME, btw!) and I'm still working on unpacking. Or not unpacking as the case may be.

Girls on the Run has also been much more intense this season in a bureaucratic way - our chapter has gone from 150 girls in the fall to over 300 girls this season, so everything just seems to take so much longer! My own group of elementary school girls are FANTASTIC this season, though! They're all such little rock stars in their own way and I can't wait to do our "practice 5K" with them next week! :cool1: They're also incensed that I'm not finding out the sex of my baby; it's driving them nuts! :lmao:

I'm still plugging away at my miles, but I had my first real problem run this past Saturday. I finished the 5 mile run/walk feeling not too badly (except for needing to pee!), but afterwards I had really bad arch pain and lower back pain that knocked me down for 3 days. Ugh. I guess my body is giving me the first warning signs that I'm not moving as well as I used to. Let me just say that the giant soaker tub in my new house that I thought would go mostly unused (I am not really a bath person) has been working overtime this week! I'm going to take it easier this weekend and maybe I'll have to cut the running out entirely and just walk for the rest of my pregnancy. We'll see...

However, despite these setbacks, my doctor cleared me yesterday to walk the Rock n Roll Seattle half marathon in late June! :woohoo: She also thought I was nuts (or, perhaps, Goofy...) when I told her about the Goofy before I ran it, but now she says that it was probably one of the best things I could have done for my body. My weight gain has been pretty much on the lower side of ideal, my heart rate and blood pressure are textbook perfect for 24 weeks, my abdominal muscles are still doing fantastic, and my baby is actually bigger than average for its estimated due date. :lmao: Now if only I could get rid of the back pain when I run...

And on that note, I'm off to my bath. :rotfl2:

sarah i'm so excited to read about your new GOTR group- I've been loving reading all about them. Just wish I could coax the program across the atlantic! So please you're loving your house, not liking your back pain but thank goodness for the giant bath hey.

Tracy i saw a lady in the gym yesterday morning that looked just like you! She was looking at me kind of weirdly, then i realised I was smiling like a maniac at her and of course have no idea who she is!!! I guess I was just smiling at the thought of seeing you there :rotfl: oops Brilliant pace by the way for your 10k

Amanda yep every finisher is definitely a winner

Jeff best of luck for thre physio.

Carrie yep, you're yoga teacher does sound amazing- did it help?

Lily yard work cross training is intense- sometimes i think that sort of work is harder than running. Go you!

pam I'll be wishing your pain goes soon, if not def get a bit of advice. Eek hate people being sore.

Me it's not been a good week at work for me, so loving my time off today for study. Politics and targets leading to forgetting that we actually deal with real people i guess. Never mind. Had a great run into the city by me at 6.30 am on monday- it was beautiful, sunny and felt very peaceful as I ran across the river. Had one of those 'wow I'm so lucky' moments. Gym on wednesday, running with beginners again tonight. Although, their beginners are now running 4 miles which is not a short run for me right now!

Anyone have any statistics knowledge? Trying to figure out the sample size needed for my fake research proposal!

Kate - Me? Make you feel lazy?? Not sure how! I really think that should be the other way around! ;) A "short walk" to you is 7 miles!

Carrie - Thank you for looking out for me. I am doing good though. It may seem like a lot, but I really did ease back into things. Only added short runs first, then a little weights, then more cardio all over a 3 week span. I couldn't be happier to be back at it! Now if I could only lose the weight I gained because of all the meds...

Amanda - The 6 year old is right! A "finish" is a "win"! No one can ever take that away from you.

Sarah - Great news on the all clear to walk R&R Seattle!:woohoo:

Tracy -:hug: How are you doing? Feeling more like yourself? I am feeling much better! Thank you for checking.

AFM - Got back in the pool this week. :cloud9: I love to swim! Can't wait until it warms up enough to head out to the lake for open water swims! Will be back out with the beginner group tonight. They are all doing so good! We only have one woman who is really behind, but she's a trooper and has been battling shin splints. They are all going to breeze through their first 5k!

Morning fellow Warriors. Just checking in to let all know I'm still here. Been super busy the past 2 weeks. I am in full taper mode for my May 1st marathon. Hope everyone has a Great weekend. :cool1:

Stan, happy taper madness!

Kate, don't know what a good sampler size is. Sorry.

Michelle, glad you're enjoying water time. You go!

Sarah, sorry about the back pain. Take it easy on those runs. Your body is a little out of norm. Glad you are a go for WALKing the half in June. It was a great event last year. Hope you are going to enjoy the stroll!

I'm in Brunswick, NJ this week doing a half through Rutgers U. Some WISHer time there too! Trying to load a podcast or 2 right now.

Happy Friday Warriors!!

Another sunny day in NE Florida. Have not gotten much training in recently. Have been going to the physical therapist (AKA Katie, The Mistress of Pain) for a bit of work on my back prior to my Dr's visit today.........

And a fun time it was!!!! Basically, I need a L3/L4 spinal fusion with the slight possibility of a L5/S1 prosthetic disk. But he also said I would have to give up "impact sports". That's not a big deal, 'cause I don't play football or ice hockey anyway. Then he went on to specify that running is an "impact sport". Ooooookay. Well, obviously that was not the news I had hoped for. I indicated that giving up the running was really not an option that I wanted to consider. Then he went on to say that if I was not willing to give up the running, then there was really no point to have the surgery.

Long story short, I have decided to pass on the surgery & try & concentrate on (non-narcotic) pain management. He indicated that the big issue is the pain. I'm not in any danger of causing acute damage or ending up in a wheelchair or anything like that. It's just gonna' hurt unless the pain can be managed, & EVENTUALLY I WILL need to get my spine stabilized.

Ugh. I'm really hoping that I can buy enough time that some other miracle treatment will be developed that will not require any major lifestyle changes.

Until then, hopefully the little white pills will be enough to keep things under control.

I think I AM going to have to shift more to the bike & swim, & cut my run days back (& maybe make the runs longer on average). I'm also going to concentrate on some hard-core core strengthening exercises. Hopefully things will work out. Hopefully..................................

I'm sorry Jim. That is definitely NOT the news you were hoping to hear. Thinking of you!

Amanda

Jim well i was coming on here to sulk that out holiday is looking very unlikely due to the nice volcano that's spewed stuff all over us... however, that post kind of put things into perspective. So sorry that the news isn't great. You are brilliantly determined but i hate to think of anyone managing things via little white pills! Your bravery is half terrifying and half inspiring.

Hey maybe the volcano will stop soon....sigh

got a good run in today- 5.84miles- longest since shin flare up post marathon.

I'm proud to say I ran 2.59 miles today! Despite several sleepless nights this week involving children and vomit. 'nuf said! My longest run yet and under less than ideal circumstances. Maybe I can do this!!! :cool1:
