Okay, I have insurance, but thanks for the thought! Not sure what any doctor would do except look down my throat (which I've done myself a few times today) and say "whatever". It didn't feel so bad that I couldn't function today, and as the day has gone on things seem to be getting better. The package did not seem one bit tampered with it (I examined it carefully) and my guess, as others have said, is that the most likely scenario is that a cleaning solution got into the product. But being in a factory that makes food products, even that shouldn't be harmful (bothersome, but not harmful). They have rules about what can be used in case there is cross contamination.

After my morning call that seemed to go nowhere with Hershey, a quality assurance person called me back and said they would send a SASE so I could return it to them, and that they would check it/analyze it, and let me know what they find. I'm not sure but I believe the fact that I had reported to the FDA also may have made a difference in their response (in an earlier phone call a supervisor told me that they don't typically ask for a product return). They reiterated that no one else has complained; I sincerely hope it is an isolated incident. I'm still bothered by the lag time though, 7-10 days just to get the envelope to me. If it isn't isolated, how many others could end up at risk?

Thank you again for the many thoughts and suggestions. If my throat still hurts tomorrow I'll get it checked out by a doctor.

Oh, funny (but not so funny) statements I was told today: "how do you know it was the Reese's pb cup that hurt your throat?" ("uh, becuase it was the only thing I was chewing when the pain started in my mouth???"). And two different people told me that the plastic bag, (that is sealed so tightly that you need scissors to get it open), absorbs odors easily and someone may have laid it down near a cleaning product for awhile in the store and that's what I was noticing. (so not the case, needless to say!!!)

I skimmed through the replies, but didn't see much about allergies. It is quite possible to develop an allergy to different foods even as we get older. What you are describing as a burning tongue is quite common with an allergic response to foods. I highly suggest you have allergy testing done to be sure you don't have an allergy to nuts. If your throat and esophagus were feeling weird that may have been your body trying to go into anaphylaxis. Did you get any hives anywhere? I have two kiddos with nut allergies. My youngest one was diagnosed in January 2008, just before she turned three years old. She almost died. It was a very very very scary situation. Anyway, it may have been something to do with the candy itself, but there is definitely a possibility you have become allergic and it's worth checking into.

I think that if you expect the fda and/or manufacturer to tak you seriously, you should have taken yourself more seriously. To assume that the doctor would have nothing to contribute pretty much implies that you know there is nothing dangerous or seriously wrong. I would think you have more credibiity had you gone. At this point, even if they investigate your complaint they have no indication of what the issue was. The Dr. could have ruled out (or concluded) an allergic reaction. He could have determined that you had symptoms of a chemical burn etc. At a minimum he might have been able to make you more comfortable. I am sorry that this happened to you and I think you honestly want to prevent it from happening to others. I think a trip to the dr's would have helped clarify the situation.

Hi. Just wanted to let you know this happened to me with Pepsi out of a vending machine at work a few years ago. A girl & I got a bottle at the same time, drank a sip and both said it smelled and tasted like chemicals. They sent us a box the next day to send it back to them and we got a response a couple of days later saying they had not found anything harmful and there weren't any other complaints and also added tons of coupons for pepsi products with their response letter. Hope they give you a response, even if it may take a few days. I'm curious to know if there is anything they find. Sorry this happened to you also. I love reeses pb cups!!!

As a person with a peanut allergy though I'm not saying that there couldn't be something wrong with those PB cups, I'd suggest being really mindful of your body right now. Have you eaten anything else with peanuts or peanut butter in it and how did your body feel?

I have carried a dormant peanut allergy for my whole life. In fact, I knew it was there because of allergy testing but I never had a problem. I ate pb cups like they were going out of style. Then, one day we were at a Japanese restaurant and we got banana tempura....that was fried in peanut oil. Well, it could have been fried in Jalapenos for all I knew. My whole face was on fire. A couple of weeks later, I had some chips fried in peanut oil and not only did it burn but my tongue began to swell.

Peanut allergies can pop out of nowhere. While I think you're absolutely right to question the pb cups, please also keep an eye on your body.
