Just a warning that you should never send any poster on these boards cash or gifts. We have several posters who start begging threads that are hidden as hard luck or life is tough type threads. One posted on threads tonight and it just serves as a warning that you should refrain from sending money or gifts to people that you don't know.

oh its that time of the year again.... bumping. :santa:

also its a good reminder for people to research their charities and organizations before giving to determine the best place to send their funds/ items. :santa:

Yep we do see it a lot at this time of year.

That's insane (yes, I have seen the begging before, but use common sense). I have paid it forward before for a couple of people here, but it was never money or gifts. If they really need help, they should be contacting agencies in their area that can help them.

I really don't think people would mind so much if they were actually helping someone who needed it. I cannot remember if it was last year or not someone gave a sob story about American Girl and turns out she was selling them on ebay.

According to DisBoards Guideline #3
From time to time our members ask to post information about a fund raiser or other support event for charity. If you are participating in or wish to promote a charitable event, please email the webmaster at corey@wdwinfo.com for permission first. We only allow posts that are in support of registered non-profit organizations and donations must be made directly to the organization in question via the internet. No requests for cash, money orders, checks or items to an individual, or personal address will be permitted. All such requests must be approved by the webmaster PRIOR to being posted. We're sorry, but requests for school/sports fund raisers are not permitted.

Also, it is a 20 point infraction.

If you see such a thread, just report it (by clicking on the red and white triangle below the name) and one of the moderators or webmasters will take care of it shortly.

Just to add these posters never outright ask for anything but they come up with the grab at the heartstrings woe is me my poor kids stories. They KNOW how to work around DIS rules.

So sad, with all the disasters that have occurred in recent years.... I see it everyday people not helping themselves but willing to let someone help them. Just sad that we have to look at people this way anymore.

That is HORRIBLE!

Thank you for this reminder.

I was new around here last Christmas and saw a number of these threads that kinda threw me for a loop, until finally someone posted a reply pointing out that things might not be what they seemed. After reading around a few other forums (maybe the community boards?) it sunk in that people were trolling for "freebies."

It bums me out that it made me pretty cynical, and I don't like to be that way! But one of the first things I do with any "sad" story now is look at the posters post count and their previous postings to see if everything fits.

Whatever happened to miss honey ham-AG doll? Has she been back since her YAGE?

:sad2:
bump....cause sadly there are those that take advantage of the good hearts of the DIS people...
I hope any and all people that really need help get it from the agencies in place that truly CAN and WANT to help!

Thanks for the info. I saw a thread like that on the community board and was unsure about it. The poster wasn't a troll since they had about 7000 posts, and I honestly felt bad for the person and wasn't sure if it was something to report. I don't want to over report things and annoy the mods, so I hesitated (it disappeared shortly after showing up.) Next time I'll be reporting it.

Whatever you do, do not name the poster. I did this last year and received a 30 day "vacation" from the Dis for revealing a known repeat beggar! All is not fair when it comes to Dis rules, as I have experienced first hand!

Oh gosh, I hope it wasn't me :scared1: with all the medical bills/ disability woes I've been having - I really am just venting!

You'd know if it was you :lmao:. Seriously though, the sad part is when I first saw your threads, I thought "oh here's someone looking for something" but after reading more I changed my mind and realized that all you wanted was support/advice and a place to vent. It's a great thing to have a place to do that, it's just sad that because some people try to take advantage of other people's kindness that a shadow is cast over everyone.

I know well the threads you are talking about and yes, we all need to be aware and careful.

I do want to tell you all about something that happened to me 2 nights ago on the community board though.

I read a thread about a health crisis by a poster I wasn't familiar with. She said to pm her for an address if you wanted to send cards or I was sure I read to send $. I was surprised by that and I admit a little suspicious. Then I saw a link to her trip report from 2006 or 7 and read it straight thru. All 40 something pages.

What I read about this brave young lady and her family was inspiring to me. The challenges she has faced are huge. Based on many things in the trip report, I believe this to be true. By the time I was done reading the trip report, the thread had disappeared. Then I found another thread on the disabilities community board about this and it isn't asking for money.

All I can say is I was so glad to be wrong and I am truly humbled by what I read. I'm not even sure what I'm trying to tell you all, so thanks if you made it this far. Sorry OP to go off topic some.

now you got me thinking...sometimes It comes up in conversations and I will mention that my dd13 wants to make cards to donate to kids in hospitals. I sure hope people dont think i'm hinting for $ or supplies.

I just dont understand How people can be so mean to use good hearted people. I can't imagine sending a stranger a large sum of money. I do remember a story on here about a family going thorugh hardtimes but this family wasnt cutting back on goodtimes. Everyone beware!

WHEW! Thank goodness, I like it to much here to leave :)
