I want to move out on my own finally and Im trying to figure out what things I will need to pay each month, so I can figure out if its even possible on my salary. I dont pay any bills right now, so Im not sure how much things like cable costs and stuff, so any general info on this is appreciated. Besides rent, what else do I need to add?

Rent
Power
Phone
Cable
Internet
Groceries
Gas
Car
Insurance
Savings for a rainy day

food
do you have a car? If so any payments related to that.
gas
Insurance
maintenance
You'll need to know if your rent covers utilities and if not average them out
gas
electric
water/sewer
telephone
internet
garbage
cable/dish network
You'll probably want renters Insurance for the apartment. It's usually very cheap.
clothing
Entertainment -- dining out and movies etc
Whatever kinds of savings you need...
emergency funds, retirement, money to buy a house some day

What is an average cable bill? I dont need satellite or anything like that, just basic cable ( MTV, Discovery, TLC, etc. )

Also, how much is a garbage bill and renters insurance? What is renters insurance? Is a garbage bill usually included with an apartments rent or is it usually seperate?

I think every apartment I ever lived in had dumpsters and the use of them was included as part of rent. Water is also usually included but sometimes not.

Cable in the Chicago area -- probably $35 to $40.

Ours is $45 a month wish Direct TV and we have Local channels with that because our reception is lousy.

It's been a long long time since I've had renters insurance. I can't imagine it's more than $100 or so a year but you can easily call an insurance agent and ask. It basically recovers the replacement of all your stuff if your apartment burns down or you get burglarized.

How about a monthly food bill? I was thinking $300. Does that sound about average for one person or is that too low would you think?

Well, I'm not in Chicago, so prices may be different here. Our basic cable is $13.70 a month from Cox, but that does not include the MTV, discovery, etc. It's just channels 1-24 here which includes the networks (nbc, cbs, abc, fox, etc) and pbs, a religion channel and actually the disney channel. We have Direct TV rather than regular cable for mtv, espn, etc and it's cheaper than Cox would be, but it's still $45/month. My basic phone line is $36/month with BellSouth. I do have the extras like call waiting and caller id, though. We have dsl, so that adds, but if you need internet access through a regular line, you have to count for that. From experience, I would say to save as much as you can BEFORE you move out for those little things that pop up- will the place you rent have a washer & dryer or will you need to pay to wash clothes- or even buy a washer & dryer? Same goes for refrigerators. Most apartments come with them, but rent houses don't always. DO you have furniture, plates, glasses, utensils, a phone, a bed, sheets, towels, all of that stuff you use without thinking every day. Once you move out, it is very hard to move back after you've gotten used to not having to "check in" with anyone. If you are dead set on moving out, I'd get a roomate to help split the bills. It's very hard to do it by yourself and, as a banker I strongy suggest that you do not get loans or use credit cards to help pay for anything. All of your bills will depend on where you want to live, but I'd say that you'll need the rent and then about $150 for electricity, $35-40 for water and garbage, $50 for cable, $40 for phone- local only(add another $15 or so if you call long distance much), groceries depend on your eating in/out habits, but probably at least $200 a month on food if you eat cheap. Don't forget that once you are on your own for living, it's for everything else, too. Clothes, shoes, hair, car, entertainment, etc. Know this was long, but hope it helps.

Rent in Chicago is high. YOU MAY WANT TO consider getting a room mate and if you have a car move to the southwest burbs. I lived in Oak Lawn and Chicago ridge. Average rent is $600.

Some places include heat and gas

electric bill ranges but about $80 a month

Cable Basic $12 for comcast

Food for one person about $50 a week

Then you have the bills you currently have such as car and movies, clothes etc...
