Walkie talkies on ship?

The Disney Cruise Line Navigator app has messaging built in. Just turn on airplane mode then turn wi-fi back on for the ship's wi-fi to use the app.

We used WhatsApp on our android phones on Disney Magic this past February, worked great.

this might be our solution bc he has an iphone and my husband and I have android. did you have to buy a wifi package for whatsapp to work?

Are wave phones available if you request them? They were great. Also walkie talkies should work on the top decks and sometimes in the lower decks if you are on the same floor. If someone is inside their cabin then it will not work

Nope - no Wave Phones at all, even by request. At least that was my experience on the Magic in April 2022. We had a phone issue and I asked if we could have Wave Phones and the answer was that they didn't even have those anymore.

Please don't. Even if you manage to get them to work you could a) be on a frequency used by the crew for their communication devices and b) will most definitely annoy everyone within earshot of the squawking and talking.

Both of those reasons could easily be resolved. Radios have many channels so you use one that the crew isn't using and you set your radio to vibrate

I've also used Whatsapp with no problem. Just put the phone in airplane mode and then turn wifi back on. Just like the DCL app. No need to buy the wifi package.

I'm going to try Whatsapp next month. The DCL app has been hit or miss for me. There have been times when I'd get a delayed message

My understanding is that WhatsApp works sometimes too. I bought some cheap android phones for the kids for our upcoming cruise, so I hope it works, lol.

WhatsApp works great, on both the Fantasy and Magic at least. Just install and set it up, with contacts ready, before the cruise. It's a great way to communicate while in the ship because it's more reliable than the DCL app.

Doesn't solve the screaming into it to make yourself heard.

Thanks, yes seems like most people say WhatsApp works well. I’m going on the Wonder though which still uses the old Wi-Fi system, I haven’t seen anyone confirm (or deny) that it works on the Wonder specifically . Worst case I can get a data package I suppose.
