Walkers Wanna Compare Notes??

Hi all:

The power is back on and laptop charged up:)

They mentioned on last nights news that the last 24 hrs was the 3rd highest snowall accumulation since they started keeping records

Snow again now with more snow on the way all day with Winter Storm Warning until 10pm tonight. I am afraid we will lose power again.

I can't wait to be at WDW with friends :D I want warm and no snow. I am selfish but I hope to sweat to death instead of :cold:

Did 7.5 miles on recumbent bike yesterday. Trying to keep this big butt from getting bigger since we are condo locked:(

Hello walkers! I'm new to the site but have been voraciously reading (and posting a little) about the upcoming events. I'm doing the half and hope to either walk it or maybe w/r. I was wondering if you could tell me how you plan to approach the distance. I had been training really well this summer, then broke a toe. :( I also had a thyroid problem they had trouble regulating after radiation, so I'm no feeling perfectly trained at all!! :scared:

Will any of you be walking the entire half? If so, what pace do you plan to go? How about w/r? Will you be doing intervals and if so, what ration? I know, this is a lot of questions, but I'm SO NERVOUS. Is anyone scared of being swept?

I plant to be at POP on Friday with my hubby to meet you and really look forward to that. I'm so very happy to have found you all. You have been a God-send to help me look forward to this trip again after being plagued only by fear and dread. Thanks!!
Lara

Lara: I think most of us will be walking the complete race of either 1/2 or full marathon. I will be slow boating the 5K and contemplating doing the 1/2. I might convince Evil Panda to stay with Linda and I .

As long as you keep moving forward, you will be fine. Minimize stops if you are close to cuts. We will all be cheering for you.

Hi Lara!

You'll do just fine. :goodvibes

I'm doing the full this year :scared: but I did the half last year - my first event ever. I trained to do the W/R (3/2) at about a 14.5 minute pace. My longest "run" before the half was 10 miles. I did fine with the 3/2 intervals. However, I had an off day for the half - heat and humidity didn't help either. I ended up doing a 4/1 intervals until mile 10. I had to just walk/hobble at that point due to 4 blood blisters forming on my feet. I somehow made it to the finish with 14 minutes to spare. Whew!

For this year, like Robert said, there will be a bunch of WISHers doing all walking and there may be a few doing the W/R intervals. The problem I have is that I can't walk fast enough to keep up with everyone so I have to run some (waddle, half-jog, whatever you want to call it ;) ) to make it work. You just need to do whatever feels right for you. Also, be sure to let us know what you will be wearing for the half so we can cheer you on. :cheer2:

See you on Friday!

Robert - glad you and Linda are OK. I think I do want it a little cooler than what you want at WDW but I can definitely see where you are coming from. ;) I was at Lake Tahoe several years ago when a storm dumped around 8 feet of snow. I guess that storm paled in comparison to this storm. :scared1: I hope your power doesn't go off again.

I do have a question for you...

Do the corrals all start at the same time? In other words, is there any wait time before the next corral starts - similar to what the waves do in the half but at shorter intervals?

Susie: All the corrals start at the same time. Just depends how long it takes to get to the start line from your corral. The 1/2 is the only race that starts in waves.

See you soon:)

Susie Thanks for that post - I think that's what I'll be doing, I'm trying to stay at a 15min p mile pace - but nerves overtake me!!

Lara you wont be alone!!

I'm pretty sure I'll be walking most of the 1/2. I may run a bit here and there on the way to the MK. Only so that my times are good.

Mark and I did 4 miles this morning, not cranking it but a brisk pace, we had to be careful for ice, narrow streets and traffic. We did it in an hour. I was quite pleased because that was way off pace for me ad we were at 15min miles and I know I can do much better than that in ideal conditions that will be in WDW.

As far as flying out we should be fine. Temps will be in the 40-50 range so no snow. Always a chance we take flying in the winter.

For some reason my nerves are not bad, I think the walk today reinforced that my training for 1 year is paying off.

Yesterday, I went to a running store here in town to pick up a water bottle belt and was talking to the owner about the race. Told him the most I had done was 6.1 miles but that I had no problem doing it and felt I could have gone on. He said I'd have "no problem" either that or he was being nice. He was excited to hear about the race and said he might look into doing it next year. More converts.

Mark and I went to an early dinner tonight and I joked that we should do the full next year. He about spit his drink. Thankfully I reassured him I would not be doing it again.

I'll have a busy 3 work days before we leave so I may not post all that much, I think the only training I'll do is Tuesday on the ellip. Miranda wants to do a walk - slow on Friday morning to test her sneakers around the BW - I'd rather save myself for the race. Maybe I'll send Mark out with her :)

Well, back to the couch and some stupid movie Mark is watching but you know my brain is mush right now and I start at 7 tomorrow UGG!

Have a good week, hope all our flights are ON TIME!

Thanks for your kind response and encouragement. It helps!! I'll be at POP Friday and will get up the courage to introduce myself. And I went out today to try to find a WISH-green colored shirt with minimal luck, but I did find a mildly lime green sweatshirt and kelly green Tee. I'm in corral C with some of you also.
Thank you so so much again for your support. I couldn't do it along--and now I don't feel so alone either! :)

Oops, doubled up again! Hope I walk better than I post! :)

Lara, you can take a fabric marker from JoAnn's or Michaels and write WISH on your TEE!! And your name!! (on dh's first Marathon ever, I bought him a shirt that I had ironed on his name - at the end he said he was struggle, but people kept yelling his name and he'd look and they'd wave and tell him not to give up!! "I dont know how all those people knew my name, but it sure helped" um Tim, You are wearing your name on the front of your shirt!! :rotfl2: boy did he turn red!!

Denise thanks for your experience!!

here near Chicago, I keep listening to the news, and every day flights are delayed and cancelled at O'Hare!! Just looking at the weather here for the week, Thurs is a good take off day, first flight out baby!!!

[Thanks for the suggestion! I think I'll do just that!! I'll take all the love, support and encouragment I can get!
You guys/gals are the best!!:cheer2:

Hey everyone we are getting closer!!!!! 3 more working days and I will be on our way. Didn't do any training on the weekend but that's OK, I am either going to make it or not at this point, will get out each night this week but nothing crazy just enough to keep the legs moving!!!!

Kim

Robert--- Thanks for that information about the start of the full. I thought it was also in waves. Glad you got back your power.

Jeanne--- I am really feeling pretty calm about the entire thing. At this point I feel what will be will be. I took all the Christmas stuff down yesterday and did laundry, now need to pack. Next week at this time it will all be over. I think I might buy Brian an AP as he still has our address on his drivers license so would qualify for the DVC discount. He is planning to come along in Oct at least for several days and it would be cheaper than a 10 day no expiration.

Welcome Lara :welcome:

Susie---What corral are you in?

I see many of you are leaving on Thursday so I hope the weather holds out for all of you that you don't have flight delays. We are leaving at 7am Friday so should be at MCO by 9am. Hopefully ME will have us to BWV by 10am.

Nancy

I am getting so excited...just a few more days. I can't wait to meet some (or all!) of you--or at least wave to the bright green shirts in the distance :lmao:

I do have to vent a bit. I had a crappy, crappy, craptastic walk yesterday. My longest walk thus far was a 10 miler on Dec. 20th, where I had a 15:20 mpm average, I was STOKED!

Yesterday, in an effort to get back a little training after coming back from vacation and to get the DH to try out his new pants, we did an 8 miler. I was totally fine for the first 4 miles, and at a good pace. But I totally lost it the second half. Groggy, lightheaded, my legs were cramping up. It was awful. I did do the whole 8 miles, but it was slow, slow, slow. I was swept :lmao: And now I've totally lost any small amount of confidence I had. It was such a bummer.

DH said that had it been the real race, I would have sucked it up and finished under time. I wouldn't have let myself get in the mental game of how bad I feel. But I'm still super nervous for the big day. I know I'm probably not alone, so I did want to share.

Thanks, everyone, for your thoughts on my kitty. He was part of the family. :lovestruc He'll be sorely missed....especially in cold weather - he slept by my feet and kept them warm at night. What a sweetie. :teeth:

Ok, back to marathons and such....

Nancy - I'm supposed to be in corral E, I think? My number is 9xxx and how I got that number, I do not know. :confused3 When I registered, I thought I would be able to complete the marathon in 6 hours so that's what I put down. I had high hopes of losing a lot of weight and getting faster. I'll probably move to corral G to be with you and Jeanne and other fine WISHers. My w/r partner hurt her knee and back and it seems highly doubtful that she will be able to participate although she still plans to go.

Also, I wasn't nervous about the full either. Until this weekend. I've mentioned on another thread about getting new shoes this late in the game. I did get them and I did my 6-mile w/r in them this weekend. At about mile 5, the bottom of my right foot started hurting, like a blister was coming up. I continued (stupid, stupid, stooooopid) because I just had to get the 6 miles in. Well, I have a nice big blood blister on the ball of my foot. It was quite painful on Sunday (yesterday) but is much better today...pain-wise. I've NEVER had a blister there before. I even used body glide all over my feet. Where I tend to get blisters - my left foot - I didn't have any problems. Go figure. LUCKILY, I have a podiatrist appt. today at 11. Maybe he can advise me as to what I need to do.

Yuck!

Hope everyone has a good trip down to Orlando. We leave on Wednesday. We plan to go to a park or two on Thursday and then go to the expo Thursday night. See you guys soon! :goodvibes

You might consider checking with any store that sells constuction worker type clothing. The shirt color, in that line of work, is referrred to as "safety green." Most road-side workers and utility workers have shirts, jackets, etc. in that color for visability/safety purposes. Hope this helps.

bekkiz, not to worry, not to worry! You got the stonker out of the way. You probably just didn't hydrate or fuel effectively but you won't have that problem this weekend. You'll do fine, trust me. You've trained for this and you are ready. Plus, you'll be with other WISHers and the momentum of the group and 15,000 of your other friends will help pull you through. You can do it and you WILL do it. Count on it! :teeth: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

Hi Guys!

Can you believe that in just a few days most of us will be smiling in the Florida sun?!

I'm looking at this in two ways -- I really, really want to not be swept and finish my event, so that's important. This is also a great get-a-way for us -- no one is making us do this, it is a vacation! I am going to do my best, and I am going to have fun. Worst case scenario -- it's not like I can't try again next year, or at another time. There is no reason to dread this, it's all good.

So, here's another question -- I have an i-pod shuffle, which I am planning to wear during the race. Is there any reason I should reconsider? I read that headphones aren't allowed, but I've gathered that's not exactly enforced...and I don't plan to have it so loud that I can't hear a conversation, just as a background to help keep me on pace.

bekkiz -- I think your dh is right, the adrenaline from the real event will carry you farther faster. I am nervous, too, but I am determined that I am going to have a good time. This is the happiest place on earth, how can we not?!:wizard:

Nancy -- I think it's great that you are feeling good and calm. This is really a case of your best being your best. At this race, at this time, on this day, you will do the best you can, as will we all. :goodvibes

Kim -- We did 5 miles Saturday, our last "long" walk before we go. We're just doing 30 minutes today and Wednesday. I can't believe after thinking about and planning for this for almost a year, it's time to go!:cool1:

Larah -- We'll be looking for you Friday! I think the WISH meet is just the encouragement we all need!:cheer2:

Sandy -- I've been checking our weather, too, and finally no snow or yucky stuff forecasted. I can't wait to leave the tarmac!:cool2:

Denise -- I'll be walking or "wogging" most if not all the time, too. I do think that all the training, off and on, for a year, will pay off for me. I've learned I could go further and faster than I thought I could, and I think that will really help around mile six or so. Our weather should be great for flying, so I think we're going to do great!:thumbsup2

Robert and Linda -- Wow, you have had quite a few days! You definitely deserve a trip to the Florida sunshine. I hope your trip out is without incident!:)

Susie -- I am so sorry for your loss. We have two almost 15-yr. old kitties, and we dread that day. I'm sure you will cherish your happy memories, and all the special times you shared.:grouphug:

Bill-- Your post made me laugh out loud:rotfl: :rotfl2: Why are we so surprised the Celtics are good this year?! In any case, they are very entertaining, and it's a great date for me and dh. And, you and I will be doing the same thing Saturday night, in different places. I'm sending all my positive energy back to Foxborough!popcorn::

Stacey -- Your body is ready for race day, think how easily you will spring up when you need to! I will be struggling to come to consciousness...:hyper:

Connie -- I'm sorry I won't get to meet you, but I'll sure take some of that pixie dust!:tinker:

Eva and Michelle -- We'll see you soon! We can do this!:woohoo:

Dave -- Can we plan on some sort of "unofficial" walkers meet at Pop at 4:00? You are undoubtedly the ringleader...pirate:

Stacey -- Thanks for the great idea about the throwaway sweatshirt. I found a Hanes zippered hoodie at a discount store for $4!

Jeanne -- Thanks for asking the question about what to eat.:listen: It's something I was wondering as well. I think we plan on a lighter pasta meal Friday afternoon, and a banana and Kashi bar before the race. We don't have reservations Thursday night, so I guess we'll be hitting the pasta bar in the food court at POR!

And Everyone Else -- I hope you are enjoying your taper, or enjoying your regular walks. To quote the ever-present (at least in my house) Hannah Montana, "Life's what you make it so let's make it rock!":rockband:

Greetings all from AKV at WDW, Morning weather report, was about 55 this AM at 0500, went out for a quick run, shorts and a lonng sleve tech shirt were just right.

I know Maria, can you believe it. I can not wait.

I have used my MP3 at the Minnie Marathon with headphones and had no problems. I believe they just use it as a disclaimer type thing so if someone does get hurt they can say they told us we couldnt use them. Not sure but I plan on taking mine, I won't get through 13.1M without it.
