Walkers Wanna Compare Notes??

Blisters are caused by friction. The body glide acts as a lube to cut the friction just as oil does in your car engine.

Your heels are probably slipping in your shoes. When you put your shoe on pull your foot as tight against the heel area of the shoe as you can then tighten the laces. If you don't your heel will not be flush against the heel cup of the shoe and you will get slipping and blisters. Do this if you have blister problems it really really works.

Good morning, everyone!

Denise, you continue to amaze me! I can't imagine how you walk that fast with your back and now to be jogging, too, AND with family stress! Whatever you've got that keeps you going, I want some too!!!

Robert, so sorry to hear about your back. You guys that find a way to make exercise work with your injuries are very inspring to me.

I have never used Magic Express before. DH and I have a timeshare that is not on Disney property, so we always rent a car. I kind of like being away from all the hustle and bustle, although this will be my first time staying on-property. I might like that a lot more! LOL! One thing I am really going to enjoy is not paying for parking every day.

I had a hideous day at work on Thursday. I was 45 minutes late leaving work, so I didn't take my walk and then allowed having a rotten day to control how I ate. It annoys me no end that I STILL haven't mastered not allowing food to be a comfort to me. I'm not going to beat myself up too badly about it, because I am right back on track, but I am beginning to think my brain is untrainable! (Like some of the people in my office!!! )

Today I did six miles. Not my best time, but still under 16 mpm, and I really enjoyed it. Temperature was 45 when we started (my friend went with me). I may make a long-distance walker out of her yet! :cool2:

You guys all be careful out there! Sounds like lots of owies going on!

Off to do laundry and clean house!:laundy: Make a great day!

Kathy

Kathy, Darlin, I feel your pain about a day from hell at work. I'm the evening manager and optitian at a LensCrafters store. Yesterday one of my part timers who has been with us for several years while she goes to school, stabbed a woman in the eye with a sharpy. One of the frames fake lenes had fallen out and when she took the marker to spot the lens for where the progressive bifocal goes, she spotted the first lens then poked the woman in the eye on the side the lens had fallen out. It didn't get a whole lot better for the entire shift.

I had a nice brisk 3 mile walk this morning to give me a grand total of 30 miles for the week. Goofy training at least is going well.

I was thinkling about something this morning and wanted to share my thoughts. Not sure if this is a walking related subject but anyway:

Do we have our priorities all wrong? We look forward to, enjoy, and need our hour or 2 that is our exercise and 'me' time, sometimes it's even our 'quality family' time. We also enjoy our escapes to DisneyWorld and other such 'happy' places. Are we the ugly American that the world hates?

I just want to be happy, I'm sorry there are starving people and I'm sorry there are people living under the bridges of the interstate highways. Is that wrong that I want happiness instead of trying to change all the bad in the world?

I think we are good and we deserve the nice stuff we have worked so hard for. There isn't a whole heck of a lot we could do to change anything anyway so why shouldn't we just do our part to support the economy by staying at the resorts, eating in restraunts and buying our runing/walking clothes and shoes. Is that the wrong attitude, should we be more concerned about helping the poor, should we be more concerned about illegal aliens having health care and better living conditions.

I know strange thoughts for a walk but I was thinking when I'm walking I'm so apart from all the evil and ugly in the world. Is that wrong to want that happiness?

Have an awesome day y'all.

Dave:hippie:

This is my opinion (for what it's worth.) We all have the ability to change the world and make it a better place. Some people are born to make great strides that affect massive amounts of people and some of us...OK, most of us.....operate in much smaller circles. Individually, we can't change the world, but we can affect the lives of those around us for the better. Sometimes it's just a smile, or a compliment, or showing someone respect who doesn't usually get it. If we can make the world a more pleasant place for those around us on a small scale, it will radiate outward.....like the ring a pebble makes in the water. I once heard someone say (I think it was on Oprah, but I can't remember who the guest was) that when we die there are only 2 questions that have any significance: #1 Have I loved? #2 Have I been loved? Nothing else matters at all. Along those same lines, someone once sent me an email that said something to the effect that after you are gone, no one will care about what you did, what you said, what you had, etc....but they WILL remember how you made them feel. I try to live according to both those concepts. I also realize how incredibly blessed I have been and try to share to the best of my ability with others that are less fortunate. If we all just do these things on a small scale, the world will be a better place for everyone. Amen.
And now I will step down from my soap box!

My take: America, makes the world go round. We invent more, work more, play more, give more and try to be more, than any other country. WE are the ones that make the machine run, we are the oil and the grease that make it run smooth. We are the backbone, we are the heart, and we are the muscle. The world depends on us. Do we have our priorities straight? Perhaps not, perhaps we are too busy working and doing to wait for the hand out the rest of the world expects. (this is me, stepping down off the soap box now, btw, the soap that came in this box is the soap WE use to clean up our own messes and the rest of the world's messes too!)

So true Connie.

I grow up poor and never got any breaks I didn't earn so I don't feel like I owe any debts. But as Jeanne said being a kind and supporting person to others is better than a hand out anyway.

Today is rest day, ain't doing nothing except going to work. Funny how only an athlete would think of a work day as a rest day.

Is anyone getting excited about meeting each other and having just the best fun week ever at Tower of Terror? I just know that this many nut cases together at one time has got to be an event to remember.

Dave:hippie:

My motto is: "The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese". I don't win any races, but I have a great time, challenge myself and get to meet all kinds of new people!! Wishers be the the bestest kind!

In 30 days, I will leave home for a new adventure! Am I excited? OH, HECK YEA!! party:

Hey all! Mind if I join your thread? I do a combo of walk/running but consider myself more of a walker. I'm not a fast walker, I have to run some just to make the time limit.:rolleyes1

My ankles and shins really start hurting if I bump my speed up. The fastest I can walk comfortably is 3.8mph. I can do a 3.9mph walk but not for very long. Right now, I'm following MfM walk/run plan for the marathon in January. I can run/jog at a 5.2 mph pace but only for a short period of time (1-2 minutes). I do stretches, work out with weights and try to strengthen my shins but I just don't seem to get much better. Any advice?

As for blisters - I never had any until the half last January. I had some hot spots and I did wear mole skin in a lot of areas but I guess the heat in combo with my thick sock just didn't do well for my feet. This next year, I'm going to wear thin socks and I want to try the new Asic Kyanos socks. Has anyone tried those? They are $15 a pair  but supposed to be great for the blister prone. We'll see.

As for winning any races - heck, I'd be happy just not to be last in my local races. :rotfl2: It seems that most people who enter these races are serious about all of this. There are no slow pokes! Perhaps if I entered races in larger cities, I wouldn't be last. I dunno. However, I do what I can do. I'm really looking forward to meeting many of you at the ToT and marathon weekend. Both will be a lot of fun, I'm sure of it!

Wow, there was some heavy discusssion here this weekend. I do not feel guilty for what I have (not that I am wealthy by any means) and I do try to help others in many small ways. I have done alot of volunteer work over my lifetime to help others and I hope that it has made a difference. I agree with Jeanne that sometimes it is the small things that you do for someone that can make a difference it their lives. I do admire those people who do make much bigger sacrifies to help others than what I am doing. However, I don't feel that makes me a bad person just because my contribution may not involve as big a personal committment as someone else. Now I'm off my soap box.

Welcome escape to our walking group. Dave is our resident expert and I'm sure he can help you with your questions. I am walking the marathon no jogging for me. My local race group isn't made for walkers either.

I did 7 miles LW on Sat. Today was a rest day. We went to Hersheypark to see the Famous Greaseband and stayed for both sessions. It will be our last trip there for the season as next Sat is the last day they are open for the summer. We will be in WDW for their Halloween celebration, but may go up for Christmas Candylane in Dec.

Time to chill out for the rest of the night.

Nancy

Welcome Susie, please join us. We talk walking and have lots of fun teasing and supporting each other. We give each other advice and have some good discussions.

If your ankles and shins need some work I recommend the simple exercises. Walking on grass once a week is great because the uneven surface builds strength in your ankles. Another good exercise for your ankles is to balance on one foot. one minute on each foot repeated a couple of times working up to 5 times each side will build strong ankles.

While you are watching TV or just relaxing in a chair stick your legs straight out. Flex your feet toward you then away from you. Do sets of ten several times till you feel a burn in your shins. This exercise protects against the dread PF also.

Good Morning:

I agree with a lot that has been said. I currently live in the house I grew up in. I moved there when I was 6 months old. I left when I got married at 20. 20 years ago I moved back into that house – purchased it from my dad after my mom passed. Recently in our neighborhood things have changed a bit which has caused both Mark and I some stress. I won’t go into it here but for the most part our neighbors are GREAT people but you know just as in school it only takes a couple of bad apples to change things.

Tonight we are banding together to take charge and work out a plan to improve our situation.

Walking : I had a great jog(20 min) and a 3 mile walk Saturday night. Did 3 miles on the trail last night and today is my off day for the above meeting. I seem to have one GREAT day, one ok day and then a day off which seems to work for me. Hopefully if it’s not too hot this weekeknd, we’ll get in a long walk. I understand the heat returns today through Friday so we’ll see how the workouts go.

Take care, keeping positive!

Dave--this just might work. I'll try it today. Thank you!

I've used one type of lubricant that came in what looked like a tiny deoderant stick. It worked to a degree, but then I left it in my bag in my car and it all melted in the heat and I haven't bought any more lately.

Welcome, Susie....jump right in!:welcome: :jumping1: :welcome:

Not much to report here. I did my 8 miles Saturday morning with hubby. I think this may have been the first long walk where he finished under regulation. Overall, we had a 15:45 pace which is pretty good for him because it is very hilly where we train. We got to the bagel store at about 8.1 miles, had our bagel and coffee and then walked another 1.25 miles back home. Sunday was some yard work and 9 holes of golf walking....it was brutally hot (90's again!) and we were both pretty wiped out. Today I rewarded myself with an advanced water aerobics class. Not only is it an excellent XT, but great therapy for my stiff muscles and joints. We're leaving for Boston on Thursday morning, so i'm not sure what my training will be like this weekend, but I upped it a little this past weekend so I'm not going to worry about it.

Happy Monday, everyone! (Can you believe Dave went a whole week without getting into trouble?......He must not be feeling well.)

Ok Sweet Jeanne, that week from hell is over and I'm back to normal, so adult supervision is required.

Denise be careful lady. I know you are tough and your hubby is strong but please be careful anyway.

Erica took me on a brisk 7 miles this morning. She did really well. It continues to amaze me how she does so well on such little training.

Have a super day y'all.

I've been lurking, but now have a couple of questions & need some opinions.

Background - 47, I have a rebuilt ankle, so running/jogging is not possible - 5 min & I'm limping for days. I walk fast for being a short person. Most say my walking is their jogging. I've always wanted to learn to racewalk, Dave, but not sure how to go about it.

Did a 1/2 last Oct w/ little training in about 14.74mpm. My first event ever. gym here allows only 30 min/time on TM, so I walk when I can outside & when I have the time. I'm registered for TOT along with my DD15, who is my real concern. She walks about 1 mile each day & that's about it, fairly fit, SMALL, but bad knee. She is a Fencer (not the chain link or picket kind)

Sunday Morning I got her out to walk. Had to go down to the Bosque where it is flatter & lower altitude to make it a bit more like FL. We did miles in 59:20 - actually about 58 as I stopped to call her to tell her to turn around, then she called me twice to complain & I didn't stop the garmin. My cell says the 3 calls were over 1.5 min total.

My plan is to make her go & do 5 this coming weekend 9/29, then the next weekend we will be in FL, so no long walking. Will try to get 6 mi in the weekend of 10/13.

So, do you think we'll make it ok????? Is the course fairly flat? Used to HILLS here as we live in NM in the high desert at about 6000'. At least there will be more oxygen in FL!!

Also, is there any one place/thread, etc where I can find out about meet-ups, etc w/o having to read through a gazillion posts?

We get into FL about 8 p.m. on Fri 10/26 & leave again Monday noonish.

Thanks all!!

:rolleyes1 :rolleyes1 I knew he'd take the bait....

Goldcupmom: :welcome: :jumping1: :welcome: I'm pretty much a newbie myself, so I'll defer your question to someone else. My gut feeling is that most young people have unlimited stores of energy, so a 13K will probably be a piece of cake, but I'm definitely no expert.

Julie, welcome. You guys should be fine. A little secret we are planning on a group event for the ToT, it will be like a moving party for 8 miles. You won't even notice the miles.

We do talk walking and racewalking techniques on here and well as post links to training articles. I will i someone else doesn't start a new post the week prior to the ToT with everyone telling what we are doing.

Friday night we are meeting at the Liberty Tree Tavern at MK for dinner, if you have park passes ask Vic, who set it up, if there is room for 2 more. If not there are other meets on Friday night. We are doeing MNSSHP after dinner on friday.

On saturday a group of us are meeting at the mini-golf course at 2 pm and then doing dinner at ESPN after. This requires no park passes. After ToT he MGM park will be open to us till 1 am. Erica and I as well as a group of others are staying in the Epcot resorts area. We are at the Swan so after the park kicks us out we will have a cooler of beer and vodka drinks for a nite cap and chatter session.

We will I'm sure have a group dinner on sunday after we all sleep in on sunday morning, probably somewhere in the Boardwalk area where no passes are required. Several are doing MNSSHP on sunday night.

Dave:hippie:

Hi, everybody!

I guess I'm way behind on posts again....

Susie and Julie, welcome! I hope you enjoy this thread as much as I have.

Dave, thanks for feeling my pain about work. No one got stabbed in the eye, but.....thanks for the idea! If things don't improve drastically with the 14 people that I help supervise, I might have to buy me a sharpie!! :scared1:
LOL!

However, I didn't let them get to me today! I walked my 4 miles after work and didn't eat like a crazed woman. I didn't have my best time, but it was acceptable to me, and that's what matters.

I am DEFINITELY getting excited about the upcoming trip to WDW, meeting all of you, and doing the ToT!

Keep on keeping on, all of you!

Kathy

Hi Kathy.

Guys, the weirdest thing. Erica and I are doing our first long training walk of the year today, 14 miles. We have done some 10 milers but this is the first real long walk. So anyway I had trouble sleeping last night ande so did Erica, she even got up in the middle of the night to make sure the Garmin was plugged in. This is just a training walk and we are excited like it's a real half or full some where.

Erica gets to go to the dentist after the walk or her follow up on the bridge problem.

Has everyone seen Wendy's display of her medals? We put up a similar medal display last night. "Thanks for the idea Wendy".

Stacey feel better.

Walk strong everyone.

Dave:hippie:

Just a quick training post. Did 4 mile walk last night. I need to pay attention that it gets dark earlier and get my buns in gear to start walking as soon as I get home from work.

Have a great day everyone.

Nancy
