Walkers Wanna Compare Notes??

Just a quickie post to wish you all a great weekend. I'm headed off to Boston in less than 2 hours. I hope to get some quality walking in, but you never know. This is an off-week as far as long walks go, so I'm not going to sweat it.
Talk to you all again on Monday!

It will be a lovely weekend here in New England. I'm only an hour from Boston. Actually I'm going to Boston next weekend to see Wicked. Have fun!

denise

Denise! You are going to Boston to be Wicked! But you are so sweet, you are our little Mary Poppins, I just can't imagine you being wicked.:rolleyes1

I got to the gym and it was only misting rain so I took off walking outside. By about a mile it was coming down pretty good and for the last couple it was pouring. If you have never gone on an exercise walk in pouring rain, it's a kick. I had put on a pair of shoes form the retirement pile just in case I decided to walk outside, so I didn't mind walking in a couple of inches of water.

I went 4 miles in all, lots of hills, time 52:27. A comfortable pace with a lot of mind wandering. All in all a wonderful walk and one I'll not soon forget.

Does anyone ever think about how much our attitudes about fitness are needed in this country. We go on a personal war everyday with temptation, some days we win some days we lose but we must never give up.

Walk strong.

Good Morning!

With all the talk about Boston, I thought as a resident I should chime in!

Expect fantastic weather, and either ecstatic or grumpy residents -- it all depends on the Red Sox!:scared1: :woohoo:

I'm skipping Wicked, but we're going to Spamalot again in January. Actually, it's the weekend after the Disney races. It's normally like pulling teeth to get my dh to the theater, but he loves this show. I'm not as experienced as some of you on the marriage front. We'll be celebrating 15 years in May.

I stuck to my guns and rested yesterday. I'm already planning a walk for after work. I'm going to try Dave's suggestion, and also a few hints I saw at the racewalking 101 site. I feel more ready to "move it", so I guess my rest day was a success :goodvibes

Dave -- I am so impressed that you kept walking in that rain!:cool1: I agree, we are set up to fail when it comes to diet and exercise. You have to recondition yourself, and find the joy, because if you pay attention to most of the cues we get from society, you will sit on your couch and eat, eat, eat...::yes::popcorn::

Denise -- Are you enjoying this warmer weather? I kind of like 80s in September. It gives me the illusion winter is much further away!:rotfl:

Jean-- Boston can be a walker-friendly city. I hope you really enjoy yourself in our fair city!

Well, my computer just chimed snack time, so I'd better get my protein in. Everyone have a great day, and feel good and doing good things for your health!

Miranda and I went to the track a few months ago on a Saturday night – we needed to do SOMETHING. I walked and she jogged. It started to mist, it felt great. Then a light rain and finally when I was almost done it was pouring. We both agreed that if we had a light mist in WDW for the Donald, we’d have no problem with that it was refreshing. Pouring rain was not great but we managed.

Maria as a 53yo that is always HOT, I do not appreciate the heat. Last night we did our treadmill workout in the bedroom with the a/c cranked. Went down in the heat to eat dinner and then back up to the bedroom where we have a DVD player and watched a few episodes of Heroes – I bought the first season. No surround sound but the a/c is a nice tradeoff.

I just wanted to let you all know that One More Mile has shirts now that say:
Walking is cheaper than therapy. I love that, always wanted one, but they usually say, Running is cheaper than therapy. Just a heads up!

Hello, everyone!

All this talk of walking in the rain/mist sounds great! I enjoy walking in moisture, as long as it's not pouring down. That doesn't happen much around here anyway. I also like walking in the sun, as long as it's not TOO hot and when it's snowing, as long as it's not TOO cold! LOL! The only one I really dislike is when it's cold AND windy. Ick! Wind is not my thing AT ALL.

My DH is a great guy, even though he's not a walker. However, he is VERY supportive of my efforts, as long as I leave him out of the deal! LOL! We have been married 28 wonderful years and I am lucky enough, also, to say that he's my best friend. We have two great kids and 5 fun grandsons. I wonder sometimes what my life would have been like without him, and the first word that always pops into my brain is "boring". LOL!

I guess I have to admit that I am not going to make my goal of being under 15 mpm by the end of September. I have tried hard, but it's just not going to happen. I am close, but not there yet. Maybe by ToT, but who knows? I am not terribly disappointed because I feel like I am mostly doing well. My exercise is going VERY well and I'm pretty darned consistent with it. Eating is not such a happy story, but then, it never is, for me. It's not horrible, though, most of the time, and sometimes it's VERY good!!! I'd have liked to have lost 10 pounds before ToT, too, but I am sure that's not going to happen, either. I am losing, but in tiny, tiny increments. Losing weight when you're very close to your goal weight is a long process. Seems like when you're very overweight, small changes reap big benefits. Doesn't work that way when you're close, unfortunately.

This evening I did four miles after work. Even though I sometimes have a hard time getting myself out there, once I'm walking, I find it very relaxing and helps me shake off the day. Deep breaths of fresh air sure help clear the head! Tomorrow I will swim and Saturday is an 8 mile walk. I am looking forward to that. The weather should be great - high 40's to low 50's. About perfect for walking! My friend is going to try out some new shoes. They sound strange to me and I don't know how well they'll work. They are rounded on the bottom, sort of like the rocker on a rocking chair and you're apparently supposed to roll from the heel to the toe. Has anyone heard of or tried these things?

Time for a shower and bed.....thank goodness!

Enjoy your exercise!

Kathy

Good Morning!

I just did a short walk yesterday, but I followed the start slow, speed up, strong finish formula. I was surprised that instead of exhausted I felt good!:goodvibes

Today was my weigh in day. After the first week of good workouts and eating right in a long time, I lost 3 lbs! Kat is right, though, the bigger you are the more benefit you get from a small change. Not that this was easy, I worked my tail off! I think when you first start it's definitely mental as well as physical (heck, it's probably mental all the time).

I'm planning on a nice after work walk, and then if the weather cooperates I'll get my five milers in both days of the weekend.

Denise -- I love Heroes! I think that's a great TM show. I may try that after I tape Monday night...I understand about the heat, my dh is a NH native and feels the same way. I've only been here 11 years, and I come from the central Midwest where it's usually 70-80 right now. This feels like home!:rotfl:

Westcliffemom -- Those shirts sound great! It really is true, I work out so much while I'm going along. I think I sleep better because of the peace of mind as well as the exercise. :thumbsup2

Kathy -- I am a newbie, but it sounds to me like you are doing great with the walking, and definitely with being healthy in general. If it was easy everyone would do it! You also sound like you love it, and that is what is most important!

Here's to great walks for everyone!

Morning everyone. It is premier week on TV so have not had time to post much. All my favorite shows are back Dancing with the Stars, House, and Grey's Anatomy. So I am doing better at getting home and then going right back out to exercise so I can be finished with dinner and in front of the TV. That also helps to cut down on the afternoon munchies. The lose 10 by ToT is not happening for me either. I am back to losing the 5 lbs I lost in Aug so I can have it off by the time we leave to go to WDW on 10/17 so I can eat and drink my way through the F&W Festival. However, prior to leaving for that vacation have to do my half marathon on 10/13 so that should burn some extra calories though I am using it as a training walk.

Wendy's way of displaying her medals is a good idea. However, I really think that once I finish the marathon in Jan my walking competetion days are over. I just miss all my other classes at the gym that I am unable to do because of training. I have worked back in the pump classes, occassional Pilates and stretch classes. But it is even hard to get those few classes in with all the required walking I must do. I really miss my intervals class, but that class is so physically demanding that I would never be able to do it and then walk. I am having problems with my hamstring on the right side this morning from doing all the leg work at pump class last night. I need to figure out which exercise we do that is causing the problem and not do that one as this is becoming a consistent problem. I always worry about my sciatic nerve acting up again when I start to have that pain.

Good luck to Kim and Beth on their half and full marathons this weekend.

From reading through this thread it looks like everyone is working very hard with training. Kathy we are all partying while we walk at ToT so no need to worry that you don't have a 15 minute pace yet.

Training this week

Monday 4 miles
Tues 3 miles TM and pump class
Wed rest day
Thur 3 miles TM and pump class
Friday rest day
Sat scheduled 10 miler

Have good weekend everyone. It is to be perfect weather this weekend in central PA.

Nancy

I sent out a morning pep talk email to my fellow walker/runners with the countdown of 3 months 2 weeks and 1 day….

From Betty who is in my cheering section:

Well, I'm doing fine - I'm eating and padding my *** to sit in the grandstands and wait for all of you.

From Karen who got lost last week and did about 8-10 miles at the Cape:

Last week when John and I were running... I asked him how by butt looked.....
He said:

"Looks like two kids fighting under the blankets....."

I was laughing so hard, I had to stop.

This are the nuts I work with. We are all at different levels but support each other be it on the track, tm or packing on the pounds to endure the bleacher at the end. LOL!!

I did 20 min jogging last night on the TM in the AC and then 30 min on the ellip. For dinner a banana and a glass of white wine – not really the correct diet for working out but it was too hot to cook and I wasn’t hungry.

Today is date night so it’s my day off. Yippie! We will probably do a LONG walk this weekend it’ll be real cool on Sunday so we may do it then.

Good morning Pretty Princesses.

I had a blah morning, I woke to a beautiful morning with a full moon giving everything a sureal glow, nice 56 degree temp and easy breeze. But things went down hill from there. I have some sort of allergies with the ichy eyes and slight headache no biggy but a pain in the butt. Then I got a good stratch on my hand trying to untangle the kitten (Will Turner) from the lace curtains in the dining room. Got to the gym and realized I had forgotten my iPod on the charger at home. Since my left ankle was a little sore anyway I just get a mile and a quarter on the treadmill, stretched and went home. Just didn't feel the love today. I'll be back strong and ready tomorrow.

Nancy, you don't have to do as much walk training if you do all the other classes. An hour in motion is an hour in motion. Look at lance Armstrong as an example he did 99% of his training on a bike but still did a fairly fast run at the NYC Marathon. A walk three times a week with crosstraining the other 2 or 3 days will keep you super fit.

Maria, sounds like you have the right grove going with your training, that is exacgtly how I train, start slow to warm up and get steadily faster and finish strong. Remember to walk a few minutes slower when you are done to cool down the legs gradually.

Everyone have a super day.

Dave:hippie:

Dave--- Thanks nice that you think I can work out that much with doing alot more Crosstraining. However, my old body can't take all those extra classes. I am learning that I need to have at least 3 rest days (usually Wed, Fri, Sun) otherwise my body is really protesting and in my mind taking all that Advil or Alleve to just function isn't healthy. So I am mostly down to only using some sort of pain relief the day of my long walks. I'm just glad that week 5 is nearly done and only 15 more to go.

Denise--- What a brave women you are to ask someone how your butt looks. I always feel sorry in pump class the person behind me has to look at my large butt when we are doing squats.

Lunch is nearly over so back to work.

Nancy

Nancy -- I have to admit I am very much a creature of habit. I love to walk -- don't get me wrong, but I think there are lots of things I should be doing besides walking, like stretching and biking and swimming. But I like walking so I stick with it. Good for you that you have a variety of activities to keep fit. Intellectually, I believe that's a lot healthier.

Dave -- sorry to hear about your lack of training-love this AM. You were probably wise to take it easy today and charge back at it tomorrow.

Denise -- I'm pretty sure a banana and wine diet is okay every now and then. :)

Kathy -- Hang in there with the food issues -- I can certainly relate. You may still make 15 minute miles by October. Seems my speed improvements always came in leaps. One day it seemed 16-minute miles were a struggle, then suddenly I was able to do 14-minute miles on my "good days."

Maria -- 17 years in October for me and my sweetheart. He's a keeper for sure.

Off to get the kids. The girls have a big swim meet this weekend. Another 20-miler for me, but this weekend is a special treat: I have a sports massage scheduled. Wahoo!

Dave I've had those BLAH days and thankfully I think its our body telling us to slow down and take a day OFF.

Maybe 2 days off. Indulge and then come out fighting.

Have a great weekend.

Good morning walkers.

I feel much better today. I have developed an allergy to something, not sure what. I have been having ichy eyes, general yucky feeling and yesterday even a rare headache. I took a couple of benydrell caps and that took care of the symptoms but left me feeling very sleepy all evening at work. I felt like if I ever just sat down for 2 minutes I would fall asleep.

I woke to a clear 50 degree morning so I'm going to take advantage and go do a walk. Probably only 4 miles. My sweet lady did a 14 miler on wed so she will end up with more miles than me. I won't hear the end of that for a while. She has sport teasing me when he gets more miles than I do.

Ok I'm back. I decided to do a little speed work so I did my 2.25 mile route with the first mile warm-up and cranked it up the last 1.25 miles, total time 28:28. It was a wonderful morning, almost chilly with 50 degrees.

Everyone have an awesome day. Remember the only best you ever have to be is the best you.

Dave:hippie:

OK, this was not my best day. It is cool and clear here also so we went down to the track. I figured if one of us needed the bathroom we could hop in the car and go home.

Warmed up for a mile, jogged for 1 mile and then decided to see how my times were for a mile after I was warmed up. I was on my 3rd lap when I tripped on a piece of astro-turf that is curled up across the track. We don't know why it's there but they leave it and it was not flat. I usually jump over it but I was walking and thought I had cleared it. Down I went, on my hands, knees and finally my butt. My wrist hurts, my elbow has road rash and my glasses are all bent out of shape. So we quit after that, made one more turn around - at a cool down pace around the track and went home. My wrist still hurts a bit, I've cleaned out my elbow and will go to lenscrafters to have my glasses re-shaped.

Will try for a LONG walk tomorrow on the street, I'll take my chances with the cars and such.

If that happened while you were at ToT, Erica could bandage your elbow and I could fix your glasses. All the other WISH Walkers could give you healing hugs and love. Connie could give you a little beverage for pain and we could have Queen Judy's Cabana boys carry you to the finish.

For anyone who buys their glasses at Lenscrafters and doesn't have vision insurance I have friends and family coupons that save you 50%. I'm currently out of them but will be getting more about the beginning of november. If anyone is going to need one let me know. I have no family that needs them since my son in Military and gets his and his families glasses free.

Go Kim, Go!!! :cheer2:

Dave, I love your links! :lmao:

It's a terribly windy day, so I am going to do something different! I am going to get on my stepper! It isn't what I prefer, but it is good for the legs!

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Good morning, everyone!

Kim - You'll probably be all done by the time you read this, so I hope everything went great for you!

Thanks to all for the words of encouragement. They sure do help!

I did 8 miles yesterday. We (my friend and I) went early the morning to avoid the wind, which we managed to do. My time was a little slower than I would have liked, but still under 16 mpm. I have been telling Connie that I really don't want to DO a half or full in WDW because the thought of all those people crammed together is hideous to me, but I want to be ABLE to do a half or full at WDW! LOL! Goals, we all have to have them!

I am having a little trouble with my knee, so I have made an appt with a dr, but can't get in until the 10th. It's a strange affliction that seems to come and go and it seems to hurt less with the longer walks than the shorter ones, so my plan is to just keep walking on schedule until I can get in. I am hoping I can just learn some new exercises or something.......

Connie, you get on that stepper and go, go, go!!!! :woohoo:

Make a great day, everyone!

Kathy
