Walkers Wanna Compare Notes??

Good Morning all:

Mark and I did 4 miles after work last night. We didn’t time ourselves but we think we did pretty good. We plan our first long walk this weekend. Well long for us - 8 miles.

The cool weather is GREAT and I keep hoping that it stays for a while. We are on the fence about our local ½ marathon on November 4th. We will be just finishing our vacation and have to work on the 5th, I guess we’ll wait and see. From the internet, the route is hilly – no sweepers but it would be a very good test prior to the Disney ½. I could adjust my times and probably relax a little if they were good. Still very nervous about being swept.

Well back to work – just checking in.

Jeanne we are gonna have the best time.:yay:

Pretty babes????? It's been a long time since Nancy and I have been called any type of babe. :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: We hope your eyesight is not as sharp as your walking! :lmao:

Darlin that's the beauty of the internet. You get to know the beautiful person inside first, that's the most important part anyway right? I would lose a beauty contest with a basset hound myself but I'm the best me I can be.

We are having fun talking about the possible identity of the live band at the Tower of Terror adventure.

I did a brisk 2.25 miles today. It was a perfect day but I had a late start.

Sorry, I haven't read the whole thread, but do you need to buy different sneakers for walking versus running? I have been running, but have been having knee pain. I plan on doing a combo for the half in January and then walking the full the next day. Do I need to have 2 different types of shoes?
Thanks!

Becky

No if you have good comfortable shoes for running that work for you wear them for both races. If you were going to be a walker only then your shoe choice might be different but for doing a combo like you do go with what has worked.

Speak for yourself, I have had some very nice old senile men who are nearly blind, think that I'm a babe. :rotfl2: Glad you like your Ecco sandals. I still haven't purchased mine.

I have been MIA but have continued with training and week 3 is nearly done. I am still having trouble mentally convincing myself that I can do the Mickey. This is without even getting into the hard part of the training. I think it is a control thing with me. I feel the entire training program is controlling my life and I just mentally don't like other things having control over me. We are going away this weekend and the fact that I have to keep training even when I am having a holiday I don't like. I already did my LW on Wed so I didn't have to do the entire 8 miles while I was away. Then I have those 2 vacations coming up to WDW, and more LW to have to work into my vacation schedule. I have always worked out while on vacation, but I just feel that I don't have a choice not to do it. I never realized that I was so controlling, but I am sure that is one of the problems.

I am also trying to cut back on my Advil, Tylenol and Aleve pills that I have been taking for all my numerous body aches for all this exercise. It is ruining my stomach and probably other body organs. So I am trying to find the mimimum amount that I can take and still function without alot of pain. Right now I am just a b***ch.

Sorry to be such a downer when everyone else is so upbeat.

I hope my little weekend away with improve my attitude. Plus I am looking forward to the ToT and partying.

I feel your pain............. I feel that all this walking since January has taken over my life. If I'm not working out I feel guilty for not keeping up and when I do have a good week I feel that I can reward myself for doing it. Today is Friday my "day off" of workouts and this weekend we'll do one long walk. I guess we're too hard on ourselves. We need to RELAX and try to enjoy the process. Well we could TRY.

Take care, it's friday!!

Guys, we do what we do because we can, we have the courage and the will to be the best we can be.

I want to point out something to you that you seem to have missed. You don't have control over a lot of things in life, you can guide and lead and encourage but life is never predictable so the outcome is never certain.

One thing we do have absolute control over is our exercise. We can choose to stop anytime and walk away, there is nothing to make us keep it up. So why do we do it:

We do it so we can have some control over some part of our lives. We can choose to make our bodies strong and our minds tough and our spirit free. We do it to set an example for our families, because it is what we all need to do to be healthy.

We do it because we need the adventure in our lives. We are not herd animals we are not content to follow the easy road. Our spirits seek the adventure and the challange. We crave that feeling that comes with accomplishing something so difficult and so wonderful.

We all do our training then we come together, kindred sprits seeking the challange. The chance to say to life "Hell yes I can", and bring home the medal to display and the memory that will last a lifetime.

Hold your head high Sister Warriors, you are unique and special and the world needs a lot more like you.

Do they have alot of money? If so, you could pull an Anna Nicole.....

Nancy: don't think ahead about the hard weeks (which are going to fall right in the middle of the holidays), just take each day as it comes. We have both worked too hard and too long for this NOT to happen. If we were doing this elsewhere, we might have a problem, but I seriously believe those green shirts are going to carry us through. Remember how great it was at the Lehigh Valley race when all those people had already made the turn and they were cheering us on? It's going to be like that but tenfold for the Mickey. I was there last year and saw it firsthand. I have spent my entire life as a parent watching my kids compete and nothing was as rewarding as this. It's a totally different kind of competition, where everyone just wants everyone else to win. To be honest, i'm more worried about getting up at 2:30 then I am about the physical demands of the race. We can do it, I know we can. Get yourself a copy of Jefferson Starship's "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us" and play it until you believe it. We can do this, and we'll do it together. And when we hear that choir the second time, it'll be like heaven.

Tim McGraw's "How bad do you want it" is good also.

And to all you warrior ladies, I dedicate the song "One hot mama" by Trace Atkins.:flower3:

If you ever want a boost in motivation go watch a marathon from the finish line. The look of pure joy mixed with all the emotions we humans are capable of. You will never forget that experience. But to actually be there sharing that mix of emotions........

There is a commercial on TV, I can't remember what they are selling, where a guy is in a business meeting looking worn out, he glances out and sees a guy on a harley, the harley rider representing freedom. When we are out there on the road, remember others are seeing us and thinking the same thoughts, because we are freedom. No bonds hold us when we are on our adventures.

I must admit, I've never heard either song. :confused3 Then again, I was born and raised in NYC......don't do country! :rotfl:

Try it dear, might change your life. Erica was born and raised in NYC also, but she likes what she found in the country.

But then her iPod is full of everything Barry Manilow ever sang. I like one song of his "Lola was a showgirl".

Dave:hippie:

I think it's the Bronx. Is that a neighborhood.

Where are Connie and Kathy?

Dave

The Bronx is one of NYC's 5 boroughs (along with Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and Statan Island.) Within the Bronx there are at least a few dozen neighborhoods. My older sister still lives in the Bronx (Riverdale). John also grew up in the Bronx around the Williamsbridge/Allerton Ave. section. I was born and raised in Manhattan (Inwood section). Erica will probably recognize all these neighborhoods.

Hello, everybody!

Is it really Friday? Because this has been one of the longest weeks in history. I think I had three Mondays before it moved on.....

However - I have been doing my workouts! :yay: (Kind of sad when the best thing about your week is that you worked out! LOL) I did water aerobics on Tuesday and lap swimming on Friday. My walk Thursday was NOT spectacular, but I did it anyway. I think I just was too tired to really do well, but I got my miles in and that counts for me! I am looking forward to my walk tomorrow because, for a change, I will have a walking partner! A former co-worker whose company I enjoy.

You know, as I was reading down through the posts, it occurred to me that the last time I was called a babe, I thought to myself, "What's the matter with that guy? Did he just get out of prison or something????" :lmao:

Nancy - I realize I'm not as dedicated as many of the folks in this thread, but my first thought when I read your post was that maybe you would benefit from taking a day off, especially at this stage of training. Dedication, consistency and discipline are very important, but I think it's pretty difficult to be those things if you're hating every minute of the workouts. I don't struggle with working out nearly as much as I do with eating. So many yummy things out there tempt me! If I don't allow myself to have one of them once in a while, I start feeling deprived and then sorry for myself and then angry and then resentful and pretty soon I don't care about anything any more except eating what I want when I want. I do much better if I cut myself some slack every now and then. The trick, of course, is not not have so much slack that you defeat everything else you're trying to accomplish. Having said that, though, I have to add that I am probably not the best person to give advice as I am probably not nearly as dedicated, consistent or disciplined as I should be! You will do fine, I am sure. You have lots of support and this is a goal you WANT to accomplish.

Jeanne, I'm counting on you to drink my share while we're at ToT, so don't forget!

Dave, thanks for asking about me. I am here, just worn to a frazzle! I am hoping for better things next week. I'm looking forward to meeting you and Erica next month!
