Wacky Weather!

Not supposed to hit anywhere near Florida. Everyone in Florida will breathe a sigh of relief Dec. 1 when this record breaking hurricane season is over.

Hurricane Season doen't end until Dec 1st! So theoretically, there could be hurricanes in November.

However, nothing is heading toward Florida. Have a wonderful trip!

The water temps are still very warm in the Caribbean! With global warming could year-round hurricanes in the northern hemisphere become the norm?

Just last year, we had Tropical Storm Otto 11/30 - 12/02 (I guess the storms don't read calendars very well). Fortunately, Otto just spun out at sea and never went anywhere.

We leave Saturday for Disney - I've been watching the weather as well (but I live on the coast in SC, so I've been watching the weather all summer...) - looks like the pixie dust is blowing in our favor for this one!

No. Not for hundreds (thousands?) of years.

The Atlantic Hurricane Season is officially from June 1st --November 30th. There is nothing magical :wizard: in these dates, and hurricanes have occurred outside of these six months, but these dates were selected to encompass over 97% of tropical activity.

The latest observed hurricane was on December 31, 1954 which persisted as a hurricane until January 5, 1955. The latest one to strike the US was late on November 30, 1935 near Tampa, Florida.

Just some climatological records I have. :teeth:

If there is any bad weather or hurricanes when we go (day after Thanksgiving) I will NEVER EVER hear the end of it from my in-laws. We invited them to go with us on this trip and they were so scared to go because of the hurricanes. We assured them over and over that at that timeof year there would be none. That's why if one does show up, I'll never live it down.

Not to discount global warming but as someone who lives in SW Florida I pay attention to this stuff.

While it seems as things are going nuts with the hurricanes, it's a 60 year or so cycle. It's not global warming. There was a cycle like this back in the 40's I believe and it lasted 10-15 years. I have heard we are now in this cycle again and can expect it to last roughly 10 years or so.

While Hurricane season "technically" lasts until Dec. There are no worries now. While Hurricanes still generate, they are only threats when the steering currents steer them towards the US. The reason the "season" technically lasts as late as it does is because of even the "remote' possibilities.

However, the currents keep them away from the US this time of year and to get a hurricane that caused any sort of significant inconvenience (if one at all) is very rare for later Nov.

No worries.

Okay, folks, keep the pixie dust coming. Tropical Storm Gamma has re-formed, and some of the computer models track it across Florida early next week (we leave tomorrow morning). Let's hope for one of the other models to come true!
