My DD is attending a pre-College Honors Program seminar (ie., sales presentation by the college) at Mary Washington College on March 22nd. We'll be driving down on the 20th and have all day on the 21st to check out the area.

Any suggestions for things to do or see? Any recommended places to eat?

We took the trolley tour which was fun. Nice shops downtown, and don't forget the battle site. We ate at a nice steakhouse but I'll have to post later about that. Can't remember right now! We were down in '01 when DS was at the Boy Scout Jamboree.

Check out fredericksburg.com!

There are kind of like "two parts" to Fredericksburg.

Old down town, w/historic shops, landmarks, etc. along Caroline Street, Sofia Street, William Street, etc.

Then there is the Route 3 West side of Fredericksburg with Central Park and lots of modern shopping/restaurants (Applebee's, Olive Garden, Joe's Crab Shack, Ruby Tuesday's, etc.) and lots and lots of traffic!

I'm hoping my boys will want to attend Mary Washington College when the time comes. It's a nice smaller college.

I always refer out-of-towners to Renato's Italian Restaurant and Old Town Steak and Seafood.

Spanky's on Caroline Street is a fun soup and sandwich place, staffed by mostly college kids.

Have fun!

One more thing...where will you be staying?

My DW informs me we are staying at the Windgate Inn on Sanford Drive (Exit 133B is closest I95 exit). It's supposed to be about 3 miles from MWC.

I know about the Central Park area, that's were we stayed last year when we first visited MWC. Place is too busy for me so I asked DW to find a better location.

Thanks for the restaurant suggestions! Steak and Seafood...yum, yum!

Mary Washington College is second on my DD's list (William & Mary is first but we have not heard from them yet.) and she's been accepted into their Honors program. She'll be staying on campus with a former high school classmate to get a taste of campus life without "her parents" around. It'll be a good experience for her.

BTW, even for out-of-staters, MWC is an excellent value. However, if we lived in Virginia, it would be a slam dunk!

If you have a car and are up for a drive, you might hit the historic route 3 corridor. George Washington's birthplace (I think it's Wakefield), James Madison's home, etc. If you can only do one, I'd do Wakefield! It's really nice and they have wonderful tour guides! Not nearly as crowded as Mt. Vernon. DD had to do a report on Washington, and the interpreter spent over an hour talking to her about very little known facts.

While you're down there, there's a nice little winery. I'm pretty sure it's Ingleside. It's kind of hard to find, but they give tours, and it's on the Rappahannock (sp) River so there's a nice view.

My sis graduated from MWC last year. All of her friends are from up north. I couldn't figure out why they all came to VA till they explained that our tuition is CHEAP. It's a great school!

Thanks for the suggestions!! My DW can't wait to wonder around the shops and such. Don't know yet where we'll end up eating but they all sound excellent.

Hey Scott.....have a great time there. I have family that lives very close to there and I've been down there many times. I love that area and before I met DP, I contemplated moving there. Let us know how you like it.
