I just booked at Vistana Resort. I read a few reviews about some of the rooms being "dark". I definitely want a "tropically themed" room. Is there a certain building I should request? I don't know anything about the place other than there are a lot of buildings and pools.
I booked a one bedroom unit and I believe the reservation woman said I would have a porch, not a balcony.?

You can always just ask to be in a more updated area of the resort. If they still give you a room in an older section, just tell them your unit is not what you were expecting and unacceptable and ask to be moved.

I stayed there in december in one of the updated rooms and it was very nice and plenty of light

I read a couple of reviews talking about the remodeled rooms being dark too, but personally found them very tasteful. They do use lots of browns and Carribean wood for decorating. You might want to look at some pictures online for reassurance.

As others have said too, if you don't like your unit, ask if you can have another one instead. It's a huge resort. My dad asked to be moved last time to get a better view, and they gave him his choice of five other units, recommended the one they thought he'd like the most, but said he could look at all five of them and pick.

Renovations are almost done at the resort. There is only one section to complete, that being the original Courts section. If you have a ground floor unit, you will have a patio. Overall there is about a 1 in 4 chance of being on the ground floor for the resort overall.

Since they said you have a patio, and since the only section remaining to be renovated is Courts, if you have booked a 2BR sleeps 6 (not 8) unit with a Saturday checkin for a full week; you COULD be in Courts. If you have a 2BR sleeps 8, or a 1BR, or even a 2BR sleeps 6 with another checkin date, then you are in a newly renovated section, not Courts.

Note that Courts does have 2BR sleeps 8 units too, but they are all uppers (balcony, not patio). Another way to check; if your unit does not have 2 singles in the 2nd BR, then you are not in the Courts section and are safe. There is one other section with twin beds in the 2nd, so you may still be safe even if you do.

Many people have described the new colour scheme as dark; I would rather say sedate and boring. We own in Courts and love it; we'll miss the bright tropical colors when they are gone, but have given in to the inevitability of beige and granite as the new resort fashion...

If you want tropical colors, you may want a Courts unit. They are the only ones left that have a bright scheme.

Where can I find pictures of the updated rooms? I have lost the info I had. Thanks!:goodvibes

The links to the old "updates" brochures are gone from the Starwood site, but you can get pictures of the updated units at http://www.starwoodvacationownership.com/sheraton_vistana_resort/photos.jsp

Note to OP Patty's Wind: In rereading your post, I missed that you had a reserved a 1BR. You are guaranteed a renovated unit. The unrenovated area has no 1BR units.

Enjoy your stay!
