VISA Extras for debit cards

I got a notice from the issuer of my debit card for a rewards program. www.visaextras.com is the website. If your bank participates every time you use your debit card with signature instead of PIN you get that amount in points. You can use the points on things like gas or restaurant gift cards and such. It is nice to now have an incentive to use my DEBIT card instead of a credit card. So pretty much anything you run out of your checking account in a month counts dollar for point within the program, not 1% like the Disney Visa.

I don't know what banks participate. This is a VISA program. I use Suntrust for accounts.

The drawback is that for the type of checking account that I have, I would only earn 1 pt. for every $2 spent. Since I can charge to my Disney VISA, make as many payments as I want from my checking account to my VISA and get 1% back, I'll opt for using the Disney VISA instead.

I used to make a lot of payments to my Disney Visa also...until that dreaded Chase took over. Then when I'd try I'd get a message it was too few days since my last payment, or I couldn't pay until the following Tuesday and that such hassle. So, I still use the Disney Visa for the things I did before, but it is nice to get some reward for using money straight from the checkbook.

I meant to edit my first post to say it isn't like the Disney deal where 1 point once earned equals 1 dollar of reward. You use a set number of points for a set reward...like 2K for a gas gift card, or 4K for a restaurant gift certificate. Not alot, but a nice bonus for using my checking account.

Webster Bank, located in CT, NY, MA & RI, has the Visa Extras program also. They give 1 point per $1. Better than Commerce Bank, I guess.

You are right, a little bonus for using your own money. 2000 points for $5 though, VERY LITTLE bonus.

Yep! Especially when $5 only gets you to the corner. Some of the dining ones were better, I think. Maybe not, but at least they're free.

Hint: To use a debit card with signature instead of PIN, when the clerk asks "credit or debit" say "credit" even though it is a debit card.

Saying "debit" when you are using a credit card also works although usually with very unfavorable consequences including sometimes charging you a cash advance fee.
