Hi all, can anyone give me an idea what the food is like in virgin economy
Thanks
Graham

Hi. Cant give precise menus but there is usually a choice of three main courses - usually chicken or meat and always a veggie option. There is also a cold salad type starter, roll, cold pud and cheese and biscuits. You can have wine with the main meal and tea/coffee follow. The main meal is usually served sonnish after take off and they serve an ice cream mid flight. Prior to landing they offer a snack - it has always been sandwiches when I have flown.

Things are similar on the inbound flights but I seem to recall the snack is more likely to be something like a muffin. Have a look on the vflyer website at the trip reports - sometimes people detail the food.

In July it was pretty much standard airline food, we had a chicken curry dish, kids had macaroni. It was edible, passed a bit of time and kept you going.

I've always thought the food was not quite so good on the return journey though, maybe it's just me.

Not sure if you have kids travelling or not but we always take some sandwiches as a back up for them. We used them coming back as they both refused to eat the dish, can't remember what it was.

I just don't expect much now of the food from any airline, very occasionally
I get surprised.

Done a few Virgin flights recently, after our Easter flight I posted saying how bad it was, its just got worse every flight, we even started eating before boarding it got so bad it was not edible. This last trip it had improved going out, return journey was not great again. So I would say hit and miss, we will carry on eating something else then just picking at the meal provided

edit: Just read Jakey's post above, so its not just me with the return flight meals, why is it always worse?
The Curry was the dish we had that I thought was ok.

We returned on the 1st sept and the return meal was quite edible. Salad, Chicken breast with rice and green beans,Oreo cheesecake,Cheese and Biscuits, a bread roll and mint chocolate. Breakfast was a muffin with oj and fruit salad. It was by far the best return meal we have had in a while. At least there was no substitute peanut butter on the menu.Yuck.

i am not a fan of the food they supply on the flights . My last flight resorted in my spending a lot of time in the loo after eating the meal. Turned out it had garlic in it which makes me ill. My immigration photo must have looked dreadful after i got off that flight. In future i am going make sure i eat before i fly, take stuff on with me to keep me going and not even look at what is being offered in flight.

I think if you want to make sure you have a good meal try and eat before you fly, but if not too fussy you will find it ok. Rememeber its a long day what with checking in early, the flight and getting through immigration you, you will be hungry ! So plan your food i say.

When went in Apr/May outbound there was a choice of a chicken (mild curry), beef (casserole) and veggie dish. Usual cheese and crackers and roll and butter and a GU pudding (which I love) It was edible. Ice creams mid flight as mentioned and a sarnie (chicken ceasar) before landing.
I've had worse.

I never expect good food on an economy flight - that way if it's nice I'll be nicely surprised.

We flew at Easter this year with Virgin and due to where we sat all options except 1 had run out. We were left with the worst one. Not even my DH would eat it and he will eat most things. DDs weren't happy either with the food.

We do eat before we get on ths flights - it helps. I find I want more to drink flying than I do for food. I can never get enough to drink:confused3

Look forward to the food at the other end - ie the wonderful options Florida has to offer.

The food on the outbound is prepared and loaded in the UK, on the inbound, unsurprisingly (;) ), it's prepared and loaded in the US. Maybe the UK catering company is better than the US one :confused3 . Can't say I've ever noticed any difference, though. It's airline food, it's not going to be a gourmet dining experience. I always comfort myself with the same reasoning I adopt if I get disappointing food in a restaurant - there'll be another meal opportunity very soon! :teeth:

Personally I would prefer them to do away with the hot meal and give us a good sandwich but they will never please everyone with food. Its not something I consider when booking flights, as long as the price is good and I arrive on time.:)

Kids meal on the return flight on the 1st Sep was Macaroni Cheese - after 20 days of avoiding it on DDP it found us. Yeuk!!

Meal was okay going, veggie pie with potato and a dessert cannot remember what. Coming back meal wasn't as nice and was the first time I thought this isn't nice, even the rest of the family agreed and we are usually a family that is really easy to please.

What I would say is going we seemed to be getting food, snacks and drinks offered very frequently. I felt full and know next year not to take anything on board with us because it just wasn't needed. I think they came round quite a bit on the return flight but I was trying to rest so didn't see them as much.

Just a thought....

No one has bothered to mention that you can go onto Virgin Atlantics web site, book in using the VA booking number ( this is different to the Virgin Holidays booking reference, so you must phone and ask Virgin holidays to tell you what it is .. :thumbsup2 ) for your flights, and pick from a choice of meal options... Like vegan, low fat, low salt, halal, etc....

I choose to go low fat last time, and it was a nice if different meal that I was served with....

Sadley for me no Choclate pudding..! :sad2: on the flight out... Fruit salad instead... but my husband donated his cheescake on the return flight! :goodvibes

As everyone else has mentioned, the food will sustain you, if not delight you..! Since I began going long haul about 11 yrs ago the quality has gone down a bit, but it is still OK.

Have a good flight, & just think about all the wonderful meals you will get when you arrive... Mmmn I can taste the pancakes & maple surup already...:cloud9:

Am I correct in thinking that although there is a restriction on the liquid you can take on there is no restriction on food items on the flight as long as you destroy anything you haven't eaten before you enter the USA? Is this the same on the return home that you can bring food onto the plane? thanks

Lisa,
there is no restriction on how much liquid you can take onbaord. the only restriction is the 100ml throiugh security. Once the other side, you can but as much liquid as your heart desires ;) (This "security" check is more for the shops methinks)

No restriction on food, unless someone with a nut allergy is on board then no loose nuts (Dissers excepted) :rotfl:

Thanks very much for that, I'm not too worried about the food as long as I can provide a pack up for my two children otherwise they will moan all the way that I am starving them! :) The drink is ok too, I don't mind buying after security even if it is making the shops a huge profit if it is keeping us all safe.

Thanks for the advice - again.:goodvibes

I can't see what the problem is with the Virgin food?? :rotfl2: :rotfl2:
