I occasionally click on a link on a DIS thread that goes to some other DIS thread (like a tech one, or a "hey look at this thread" one). Sometimes whoever put the link up has set it up as a "View Single Post". I have no idea how they do that.

But my question isn't how, but why . What's the purpose of making it a "View Single Post" and not just linking to the whole thread :confused3? I normally want to see the other posts in the thread, too.

I use Show Single Post when what I'm referring to is indeed in a single post. It helps ensure the person following the link will more readily find the information. For example, if someone is looking for a recipe for corn chowder, I can link to that one post, instead of to the page where there are chili recipes above, and Waldorf salad recipes below. The user can always click a link from there that shows the whole thread.

The little number in the upper right of each message is actually the Show Single Post link to that message.

Ah, okay. I guess that makes sense. I usually just link to the thread and say "see post # 5" or whatever. I can see using "view single post" if it's just for something informational like a recipe, but if it's an opinion-related or problem-solving (e.g. tech) thread, I like to see what others have also said.

I never knew about clicking on the little number :).

They used to call me, "The Resource". :teeth:

Remember, we have grammar challenged and spelling challenged people here. ;) They may not be able to follow "see post # 5." :upsidedow I try to keep things as simple as possible.
