can anyone recommend a good one that is fairly simple and has the basic functions

If you are running Windows XP there is Windows Movie Maker. It's now at version 2.0 (I think) and is actually pretty comprehensive as a basic solution.

Only downside is that it naturally only produces files in WMV format. I believe that there is a plugin you can buy online to produce files that are suitable to be put onto a DVD. Around US$20, I believe
