Veterinarians- Need help ASAP- Pretty Please! My dog just swallowed....

I have a dachshund who will eat anything. A couple of Christmases ago, he ate a glass snail Christmas ornament (what? it was cute ;) ). He was fine. We didn't even realize what he had done until I was vacuuming and discovered the evidence under the china cabinet in the far corner of the dining room. Hope your puppy is ok!

I'm such a bad puppy mommy!! :guilty:

Don't beat yourself up over it, these things do happen. You'll be lucky is that is the last thing that your dog ever gets into. They can be quite sneaky critters!!!

You're all so sweet!

Jack is feeling much better from his surgery! He's tearing around the house. I guess he feels okay. He's into everything tonight. I felt bad for him earlier and was going to let him sleep on the couch tonight instead of gated in the kitchen, but he's all over the place and I don't trust him.

Want to hear the other funny thing he ate this evening? He tried to eat the yellow credit card slip from our vet bill from this afternoon.... $222.000. I pried most of it from his mouth. :rolleyes2

I've been walking around singing my new song... to the tune of the theme song from "Rent"...

Five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred dollars, Five hundred twenty five thousand dollars so dear..... Five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred dollars, how do you measure, measure a dog year....

In x-rays, and Frontline, poop samples and vaccinations... In mange scrapes, and flea dips and Eukanuba....

Five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred dollars, how do you measure, measure dog years?

Ok! I think I will print that off and take it to work!! LOL!!

Welcome to the world of pet ownership, LOL. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ :lmao:

Hope your dog is better today, let us know when you can. paw:

Still no sign of the chicken bone! Things are still "moving" if you know what I mean, and so far, he doesn't have any of the things the vet said to watch for...
The vet said it could be as late as Monday that we might see it.

I'm afraid it is just sitting in his stomach. Some foil came out this morning, and that's what the chicken bones were wrapped in, so maybe it's on it's way....

I hope Jack is feeling like his old self soon. Some dogs like kids present challenges. :thumbsup2

our first dalmatian was a thief. She stole anything and as fast as she could. She did the bone thing right out of my hand and had a little problem but not bad. Then she stole a popsicle out of our granddaughters hand......stick and all ..called the vet and he said that it should pass and watch for it in a few days. Sure enough poop on a stick ( I AM NOT KIDDING EITHER) it came out the way it went in.....never figured out how that happened either....

Sorry, I was offline for a few days and didn't see this thread until just now.
I've seen dogs pass all kinds of weird things, but I've also had to go in and retrieve some weird things. If it was a small enough chicken bone and the dog had chewed it up into a few pieces, they will sometimes dissolve somewhat in the stomach. He sounds like a fairly large dog (you said Lab mix, right?) so his intestines will have a larger diameter for such contraban.
Since it's been a few days, I'd continue to watch for any sign of gastro-intestinal distress. I've never seen a dog or cat with an obstruction that wasn't vomiting his/her brains out. If he's still acting OK in a few days, I'd say that you're safe.
To everyone else: As for the Easter grass, PLEASE don't let your cats eat this. I've seen several cats die from eating easter grass, dental floss, string, etc.

MickeyMouseGal,

We still have not see anything and it's been 3 solid days! He's still eating and hasn't had any digestive problems, but shouldn't we have seen the bone pass by now???

He's a lab mix, but only 4 months old. He currently weighs 24 pounds, so he's still pretty small. The bone we saw sticking out of his mouth, was a "drumstick" shaped one from a chicken wing. It was at least 3 inches. He swallowed it whole while we were trying to take it from him. It wasn't chewed up.

We called our Vet again today, and they said to keep waiting if he wasn't in any distress.

Could it still be just sitting in his stomach without causing a blockage? Can something that big actually pass through?

How long should we wait before we ask again for an x-ray?

I once saw a young Golden Retriever that swallowed a pair of little girl's panties. He finally threw it up about a week later, but the dog had intermittant vomiting the whole time. (We were just about ready to go in and get it when it came up.) And a friend of mine had a German Shepherd who passed a dish towel! (Passed as in the back end!)
It sounds to me like the bone has either dissolved or softened enough that he has already passed it undetected. It may not be a bad idea to go ahead and have him radiographed. If anything, it will tell you if there is still cause for concern. If there is no bone visible on the rads, you don't have to worry anymore. If it's still in his stomach, you may want to opt to have it removed with an endoscope. If your vet doesn't have one, they should be able to recommend someone who does.

Personally, I would not have waited this long. I would get the baby x-rayed immediately. Just to make sure no internal damage was done (which has been known to happen, especially with chicken bones). Good luck! Keep us posted! :thumbsup2

I would agree with this IF the dog was showing signs of distress. If he's not, I personally would not rush into an XRay. He's just a baby, and doesn't need to be exposed to radiation unnecessarily unless it's warranted (granted, it's low dose, but still)... Of course, that's just my opinion. ;)

I can't tell you how many times over the years I've rushed to the vet for various problems and gone the "extra mile" to make sure my dogs were fine.

Once, when I was young and didn't know any better, I agreed to elective exploratory surgery to make sure my dog was ok after he vomited some whitish material on one occasion. That 7yo dog died during the surgery, unfortunately :( (probably from the anasthesia), and of course I later wondered why I ever agreed to it in the first place, since nothing abnormal was ever identified. At the time, I thought I was doing the right thing. Live and learn.

Luckily, my current vet and I have a great working relationship and I can always run things by him on the phone before we decide if the dog needs to be seen, or if it can wait, etc. He tends to be pretty conservative about things, but when it's warranted, we move forward without delay. I've also been known to seek out second opinions and other treatments if I needed to, all with his blessing, and he's even incorporated a couple of my "finds" into his own practice, LOL.

As I said earlier, if this is the last contraband this Lab :dog2: ever eats, it would be a miracle.

Still no sign of our bone!!!

Our vet keeps telling us to wait it out. BUT... Jack has an appointment on Friday already, so while he's there, if we haven't seen the bone, we are going to insist on an X-ray! At this point, I don't care what it will cost us.

He's acting great, and having a really good week so far... (knock on wood!)

He's eating like crazy, and things are moving quickly through him. I inspect all of his "output" and nothing out of the ordinary. It's a nice size, color and consistency... I know that's gross! I've been so preoccupied, almost obsessed with looking at what comes out, hoping I'll see that bone! My neighbors must think I'm nuts out in the yard inspecting his poop all the time! We're always with him when he "goes" to clean it up, so we definitely would have noticed it coming out.

MickeyMouseGal,

If it is still in there, hypothetically sitting in his stomach not causing any visible trouble, will an entire wingbone disintegrate over time? If it is just sitting in there, will it eventually "decide" to come out? It has been 5 days! I'm relieved to hear it may be able to be removed with an endoscope. I'd hate to see him have to go through something more invasive!

Oh, I feel for you. I've been in your exact shoes with our lab Jake. He's eaten chicken bones, corn on the cob (which can REALLY be bad), baggies full of treats (baggies and all) you name it, Jakie's eaten it! We did the xray thing finally for the chicken bone b/c he never passed it and nothing showed up on the xray, so who knows where it went :confused3 ? Good luck to you and please keep us posted. We just had chicken wings last night and I was soooo paranoid about the bones! It seems no matter how careful you are, those dogs (especially mine) finds a way to get what he's not supposed to have!

I think we got the CHICKEN BONE! :)

It didn't look like a bone anymore, and was half the size I was expecting. It was spongy, not hard like a bone, but we can't figure out what else it could have been. It was whitish in color.

I think the crisis has been averted! I think we'll ask the Vet for an X-ray while he's there tomorrow just to be sure!

Thanks for your support and information!

:lmao: :lmao: This made me bust out laughing. :lmao:

I can't even imagine what that was like! Nor do I really want to I guess. :rotfl2:

My dog doesn't eat things she's not supposed to have, but she does eat her toys. It's like her main goal in life is destroy then swallow!!! Last week I found her "squeaky" (a little squeaky plastic hedgehog) half eaten in the living room. She pooped plastic for several days- but kept eating and pooping, so I didn't worry 'too' much- but I was out there poop inspecting too!
