We are looking for things to do at Vero Beach. Does anyone know where to rent a metal detector for beach combing? What off site dining options do you recommend? We are traveling without the kids and are splitting our vacation between Boardwalk, Vero then back to Boardwalk. We are not looking to do a lot of thing but we wanted to explore for a future trip next year with the Kids. Any help would be appreciated.

I am no help... but we are doing the same trip except BWV,AKV, and VERO. We have never done VERO so I look forward to hearing what people say!! It will just be my husband and I!

:surfweb:

Add me to the list. DH & I just booked a long weekend trip. Never been to DVC Vero before. Thought I'd do some investigating. Hope to hear some good things!

At the resort itself Sonya's restaurant is nice place for dinner and bar usually has live entertainment in the evenings. We've done the evening turtle program which was very interesting. There are boating trips on intercoastal although haven't done those as of yet.

Here's link to Vero Beach lovers thread where you may find some good info

I'll be down at VB next week, will be trying out some different restaurants. So keep an eye out for my "somewhat live VB report".

As for the metal detector, I would call the resort and ask them where you could rent one.

Another questions about VERO--- do you need to make any ADRs or sign up ahead for any programs, tours, etc???

If you want to do the Sunday brunch at Shutters make an ADR(not sure if that's a character meal, we did it on Easter Sunday last yr and there were no characters.)

For dinner, I was there Easter week and ate at Shutters twice(made ADR's) but the place was not even half full the two nights we ate.

I just wanted to thank you guys. I've been swamped and today was the first day I had time to look. The Dis Boards are great. Thank you all again.

We just returned from our second trip to VB, and have already tried to book another trip for July, but it was full! We love it there...it is such a beautiful beach town! It's not the place to go if you are looking for crowds of people and lots of "action". But, if you are looking for relaxation, family fun, and beautiful coastal scenery, you've hit the nail on the head with VBR!

This was truly a "beach vacation". We were so content to just enjoy the resort pool and the beach every day! The resort has lots of activities planned for families/children each day. You will receive a schedule upon your arrival. If you have young children, you will want to schedule them for one of the "Unbirthday Parties" during the week. Each child within the appropriate age is allowed to attend only once during your visit. My six year old son really enjoyed it. We also attended the campfire sing-along/s'more making event. Wonderfully executed and a great family night activity. The swimming pool is THE place to be each day, with slide races, a putt-putt coarse, scavenger hunts, and other activities. It's also a great place for relaxing with your fave beach read. Unless you have small kids, like us. :)

The surf at the beach can get a little rough for young kids, old ones as well at times, so use caution. Just use your judgment - if you are family of strong swimmers, you'll love it! Body surfing is great, if you don't mind getting beat up a little!

If you enjoy sight-seeing and shopping, head to the beachside business district of Vero Beach. Several beautifully quaint, upscale shops, restaurants, etc... make for a very nicy day. Take a tour through The Driftwood Inn - very interesting. We also enjoyed driving down some of the beautiful streets lined with Live Oak trees in the Riomar subdivision, and imagining we owned one of the beautiful cottages just yards from the beaches. :)

Other possible activities:
Sebastian Inlet State Park - fishing, kayaking, surfing, cycling, hiking, biking, camping, picnicking, fishing museum
McLarty Treasure Museum at Sebastian Inlet State Parkpirate:
National Navy UDT-Seal Museum - Ft Pierce
Indian River Citrus Museum
Vero Beach Museum of Art
Piper Aircraft, Co.
- We did not visit any of the above this trip. However, I used to have family living in Vero, so I visited often as a child and enjoyed all of these things. We will definitely be taking our boys to some of these places as they get a little older. Right now, our 6-yr old would have enjoyed the Treasure Museum, and the Navy Seal Museum, but we didn't have the time (or the inclination!) to get to them this time.

As for off-site dining, we are at a stage of life where we look for "kid-friendly" dining with our two boys, ages 6 and 1. :) So, unfortunately, I am unable to make fine dining recommendations. Maybe in a couple years. :) Some of the casual (family) restaurants we tried, or that we hoped to try but didn't get to, included:
Orchid Island Pizzeria: This was my fave! RIGHT next door to the resort, immediately across from the Wabasso Bridge. We ate takeout from there two nights during our five night stay...it was delicious! So convenient, too..walking distance from resort. We enjoyed the resort so much, honestly, we really didn't have a great desire to leave it too much, so this was convenient and hit the spot for our Italian tooth!
Capt Hiram's - was recommended, but we didn't get to it. Located north in Sebastion.
The Lobster Shanty - I had eaten here as a child 30 yrs ago, so wanted to go back to see what memories were stirred. It had changed quite a bit, but for a family with young ones, it was a good meal at an extremely reasonable price. We had a window seat where we enjoyed watching the dolphin swim only a few feet away in the intracoastal waterway. We've seen mixed reviews on this, but we must have hit it on a good day.
Mulligan's - Oceanfront, very casual, with bar. Cute atmosphere, great service, good food. Located in the business district. We happened to hit on St. Patrick's Day and it was wild! :)
The Lemon Tree - Was highly recommended, but we didn't get to eat there. It is a tiny, quaint little place in the business district. Looked wonderful, but the baby was not cooperating, so we didn't get to go. :( Next time for sure!
Waldo's at the Driftwood - we were told this is "where the locals go" to hang out for drinks and their seafood fix. Didn't get to try it out.
Tiki Bar & Restaurant, Ft Pierce - if you are up for a 30 minute drive down A1A, try this place out. Very casual, styled like a cute Tiki Hut on the waterfront in downtown Fort Pierce, on the Indian River. Great service, food was fun and casual. We enjoyed it.

I hope some of you find this helpful!

Wow that sound like the vacation we were planning. We rise early, before the sun. We want to comb the beach early, relax with a book and then explore the area. Casual is all we want for dining. This is a recon trip with my wife. Next summer we wanted to take the kids. We wanted to be sure there was plenty for them. Thank for that trip report. I'll let you know about ours when we get back. 20 days to go

Thank you for info on Vero Beach, has anyone been there in the month of January? Thinking of booking after the 1st of Jan.
Thanks, Elaine

We were there last year from December 28-January 2. It was wonderful. We absolutely fell in love. We had ocean view inn rooms and the view was stunning. It wasn't warm enough to swim in the ocean in my opinion, but there were a lot of kids in there! We did a lot of walking on the beach and collecting shells. We spent our days by the pool mostly, which was heated and plenty warm to swim in. It was so nice to get away from the hustle and bustle of WDW at that time of year. We felt like we had found a hidden retreat! We had New Year's Eve dinner at Sonya's, and then they had a pool party where lots of people jumped into the pool at midnight with their clothes on! I was a little hesitant to go at that time of year but it was perfect. We were really able to relax.

Thank you so much for the quick reply and good news! Now I just have to convince the husband!

Elaine

We're back from Vero and I've already started planning our next trip back. My wife and I feel in love with the resort. It was everything you all said and more. We are ocean people, we live in the ocean state (Rhode Island). We have a very short summer here. We cherish every time we can get to the beach or a short drive to the shore. The fact that next year when we take the kids (teens) we can hit the beach and leave them sleeping till noon sounds so great. Vero has teen ice breakers. We're sure this will mean we will only see the girls when they need more money (YAHOO). It's not that we don't love spending time but we hate those words they all utter "WE'RE BOARD". Also our too girls are opposites. One is pool, one is beach, they are going to love it. We can't wait.

We're at Vero right now :) This is my favorite DVC resort at the moment. We live 25 minutes away but this place still feels like vacation to me:goodvibes

Anyways, I don't know if anyone else has suggested it, but Squid Lips in Sebastian is great. You can get on their email list and get a B1G1F entree in your welcome email too:thumbsup2 Also, if you are game for a little drive, Island Fish Grill in Indialantic is awesome. It's at the intersection of A1A and 5th Ave., about a 20-25 minute drive from Vero Beach Resort. Captain Hiram's is also a favorite, but the atmosphere is better than the food, KWIM? Anyways, you'll love Vero. I could use every single DVC point we own up just staying here, I swear.

For dinner, I was there Easter week and ate at Shutters twice(made ADR's) but the place was not even half full the two nights we ate.

The character breakfast is at Shutters, but it's only on Saturday. It's Goofy and Donald regularly, but also Minnie and Daisy on Christmas and V-Day apparently (according to a CM at the restaurant yesterday). Anyways, it was a very cute breakfast. Donald came to see my toddler FIVE times while we were there because it wasn't crowded. This is the place to be if you want character interaction:thumbsup2

We did the plain Easter buffet(2008), no characters. But Donald and the Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland were in the lobby that morning.

My kids are a bit older and don't really get into it.

The Character meal on Saturday b4 Easter this year was packed with locals! The parking lot was a mad house

How crowded was Vero at Easter? We just returned from a very short trip to Vero and would love to stay longer next year, but DD starts middle school and we need to go during her time off...was thinking Easter break. Any insight would be appreciated.
