Hi

We will be visiting vero beach for the first time in January, and we were wondering if the ocean will be warm enough to swim in? I am thinking no, but I am hoping yes.

Thanks

The average air temperature in VB in January is in the low to mid 60s, and the water temp is in the mid 60s, I think. Add in the wind on the beach, and I wouldn't be swimming in the Atlantic in January.

What I am more worried about is that the beach will be closed again! Last February when we were there, guests were prohibited from the beach area of the resort while they "built up" the beach. It was closed during our entire stay. I was told this may be an annual thing.

We were not warned in advance that the beach would be closed. We found out after we got there. Disney offered to shuttle guests to a public beach but we declined, so I don't know if those who went were satisfied with the substitution.

So if you are going in January or February, I would advise that you call to see if the beach area at the resort will be blocked off during your stay.

Thanks for the info.

Even though the water wouldn't be warm enough to swim, I was still hoping to spend some time walking on the beach.

I am going to have to look into this.

That's summer water temperatures for NH and ME. LOL We get excited if it's 64 - it's 66 today.

Well, it has taken some time but I finally confirmed with member services that there are no plans to close the beach this winter.

I was happy to hear this. What's the fun of staying at a beach resort if you can't go on the beach?

When my family went in December 2007 we found it warm enough to spend quite a bit of time at the beach and in the water and ended up with quite a sunburn.

Of course we are from Vancouver, Canada so we may have different temperature standards but that December was quite warm from what I remember.

We are from Canada too, so I am hoping to be able to at least walk in the ocean. I am hoping for a warm winter!

I think that their standard of warm enough is alot different from many of us. I grew up spending summer at the cape and at our summer home in Scituate, MA or visiting family in Wells, ME. Now wells was cold. But we went anyway. My DH grew up next to the Canadian border in NH. They lived on a small lake of which the other side was in Canada. His sister would swim in the lake barley 3 weeks after the ice came off. So I don't think that in the 60's would mean much to my family.
