There was an article a few months back on Vero Beach being one of the best communities to live in...

I know there are VBC owners here who LOVE everything Vero and some of you who plan to retire there, so I'm wondering if anyone saved the article?

Thanks!

Annie

It's too bad Nick got banned, cause I know that's where he was heading. He was even getting info about a college in the area...presumably for his DD17. Oh well........

Who was Nick, and why did he get banned? I'm on this board a lot, yet I seem to be clueless about this situation.

I have done a little research on the area and it's Sebastian that was the rave and also supposed to have low prices in homes. What I have found is that it all depends on where you are coming from and what the cost of homes is in your area by comparison. Also the supply and demand ratio in the Vero/Sebastian area is very low compared to many other areas, so I thought there were slim pickings and not very low prices.

Nick had some links a while ago to new developments and communities that were appealing. As far as what happened to Nick, add me to the list of I don't know, I missed it too, in disbelief, and sad. He was so much fun and such an asset.

Here's a good "where to live" link

Nick had one weakness.... he didn't like the way a certain renter tried to get us to help him jack up the price of rental points and made it a point to post FACTS every time this renter tried. This didn't sit well with someone who had the power to delete and ban. This "someone" apparently disregarded all the hundreds of positive, informative and helpfull posts made by Nick and instead decided to focus on a few borderline posts...... and the rest is history.

Thanks for the links everyone!!!!

I like the area, have a cousin on my dh's side who lives in Melbourne and just found an ad for a job in Vero Beach that reads like my resume.

Since small houses here go for 300,000-400,000 where I live now, I'm figuring we can get something decent down there for somewhere in the 200,000 area give or take.

msdis- I've heard Sebastian and Malabar are options near Vero, and as far as slim pickings go, well, all we need is one house! :D Dh's cousin is in real estate part time down there, so I've got her on the job looking for us too.

If anyone else has any more info, I'll be happy to take a look at more links.

Thanks again guys you all are the best.

Just wish Nick could put his two cents in. :(

anniet,

Let us know if you end up moving down there.

We have also checked out the area. DH is waiting for the call to tell him if he can transfer down there.

The Sebastian area really appealed to us. We have 2 young children and their schools all received high marks from the state of Florida.

The home prices don't look too bad.

Anothe good website is www.tcpalm.com

We lived in Vero for a time, about 10 years ago. I'd be glad to answer any questions (although a lot can change in 10 years.)

Dreamfinder2,

Where did you live? Did you use the schools in the area?

Did you enjoy living there?

Thanks in advance.

As far as retiring at a DVC, I think I would have to lean toward HH. We own most of our points there, and the winter points are cheaper. I'll have to figure out how long I could stay during late winter/early spring at HH.

If you've been around the DIS boards even as a lurker, you may have seen his past lives. Search on Ncligs or Nick@ VB+OKW to learn more.

:D

Hi,
You guys are soooo lucky I would luv the chance to live or retire in the Vero Beach area but due to a mistake of birth ( I'm English..:teeth: ) I am not allowed. Oh well just have to make do with regular vacations...

Mick.

:smooth:

I was wondering where they were. I loved his posts . . . and smilies. So sorry to hear about that.

Oh well. I love Vero, too, but I don't know anything about retiring there!

Good luck.

anniet-you will be fine in this price range. Our average house up here until the last year or so was closer to 150,000. :( You see our problem. We hope to look overthe area this fall. I may need your cousins name. :teeth:

I hope so--we are priced right out of the housing market up here. Currently living in dh's mother's home, but she comes back from New Mexico for the summers:eek: so you see my predicament. We need our own place and want to move quickly before we are priced out of Florida too!

If you are serious about moving to the Brevard County area, PM me, I will be happy to put you in touch with dh's cousin. She is a real estate whiz! We got married in the home she had built in Melbourne and it is absolutely gorgeous and has appreciated considerably since she bought it two years ago.

Click on my Disney pictures link in my sig and then click on the wedding pictures link on my website. I think there are some nice shots of the house, but the pics don't really do it justice.

Hi,

If you want to PM me her name, I'd appreciate it. I really hope we get to move down there soon and also want to buy a home before prices get too high.

We just moved to Melbourne 6 weeks ago from Michigan. It is wonderful!! A word of warning for those of you interested in this area. Things sell FAST. I am talking about houses selling in 1 day on a regular basis. That is unheard of up north. The best way to buy a house down here is to be here ready to buy. When you see the "perfect" house, buy it. This isn't the type of market where you can go home and think about it for a few days. It will be gone. We would be on our way to see a house and our realtor would get a call that the house literally just sold. Happened many times. My sister is down here now looking and she didn't believe me. After losing three house in three days because she hesitated, she now believes me. It is a great place to live and only an hour from WDW and an hour to VB. Throw in the ocean and the great weather and you can't beat that!

LisaR I may be PMing you to pick your brain!!

I also believe what you say. Dh's cousin said "Get down here now cuz I guarantee if you wait until next year you will be paying close to $100,000 more for what you want!" We are also considering new construction, but I think thoes go pretty fast too!

Were you looking strictly in Melbourne? I was told Sebastian, Malabar and even Grant aren't that bad still have low pricing and are on the coast.

floridafam I pmed you- Hope to see you in Florida!!!

Anniet,
Feel free to private message me although I am not an expert on this area....................yet! lol There are vacant areas around here with planned subdivisions that are already sold out and ground hasn't even been broken yet. It is unreal. My sister looked at one of them on Monday. On Wednesday they went back to put a deposit on it and the price went up $10,000.

We looked in Malabar but it was too far away for us (too far from DH work and too far from the ocean). Sebastian was also too far for us. We did look at homes there with my sister. There are some very nice ones. The only thing all of us didn't like about that was the area some of the homes were in. There weren't a lot of actual subdivisions. It was more like three really run down dumpy houses followed by two beautiful brand new homes. Your neighbors might live in a shack and you would live in what seems to be a palace compared to them.

One reason there isn't a lot available here is because many people (especially realtors) buy up new homes and hold onto them for 6 months and sell for an even bigger profit. It is very common to call a new sub where construction isn't even complete and be told everything is sold out only to see three homes listed in the paper next week. At this point, it is a great investment. Home prices are going up so quickly. Some day that will stop but before that happens, the homes are skyrocketing on a daily basis.
