Vero Beach being sold soon

Funny how everyone says I am a fraud! Rich Hyams can bash Vero Beach Resort all day long making accusations about Disney's selling practices with NO PROOF but that is ok. What a joke. Anyway, the new development that I would like to report is that Hilton Head resort is going to be part of the deal in the sale, so it looks like both resorts may be sold now.

All the more reason to buy where you want to stay! Why would anyone care if the thread is true or false?

I guess if you are familiar with Rich you are a lurker who just decided to post or are using a new name to share this info. :) It's funny that Disney would do this now as sales of SSR are beginning. Although Disney covered themselves with legal language, I can't imagine that they won't face lawsuits from members who will not go quietly when it comes to no longer being able to use their points at WDW. I wouldn't think negative publicity is what they are looking for right now. That potential would seem to outweigh any gain they might see in the sale.

I tend to agree with Crisi and the other posters that only someone on the "inside" would know this kind of information. If you are the insider, you are most likely putting your job at risk. If you are passing along something you were told, you are proving the point that people should never share their confidential work-related knowledge with anyone. You never know where it will end up.

We are VB owners and are proud to be part of the Disney Vacation Club. That said, we also own at OKW so if VB is sold, we will still be going to WDW. If VB or HH become part of Marriott, there could be a whole lot of new alternatives that quickly become available to VB or HH owners. It intrigues me to see how the number of DVC points one owns might figure into the Marriott system.

I read recently where Marriott was rated #1 by Forbes based on

"innovativeness, employee talent, use of corporate assets, social responsibility, quality of management, financial soundness, long-term investment and quality of products/services."

Hmmm, sounds a lot like we expect Disney to be.

Does Marriott even have a pts system?

No, Marriott Vacation Club does not operate on a points system. Its timeshares are sold and used as pure full week timeshares. Many folks think Marriott Vacation Club has a points system -- those folks may be thinking of Marriott Rewards Points, which is not affiliated with Marriott Vacation Club but affiliated with the Marriott Hotels system. Marriott Vacation Club owners who purchase new units direct from the developer are entitled to "exchange" their timeshare weeks for Marriott Rewards points (with a fee) to use in the Marriott Hotel system, generally at a rate that is not very worthwhile value-wise. Marriott Vacation Club also offers Marriott Rewards points as incentives to encourage purchases from the developer. Of all the major hotel players in the timeshare industry (Marriott, Hyatt, Four Seasons, Starwood, and Hilton), only Hyatt, Starwood and Hilton timeshares operate on a pure points system similar to DVC when it comes to usage within the systems -- the difference with DVC is that these other timeshares are all sold as deeded fee simple weeks as opposed to a contractual Right to Use with an expiration date.

Sorry, probably way too much of an explanation!

BUT Marriott already has beach front villa's at HH, so I can't imagine that Marriott would even consider buying Disney's HH resort...
Considering HH is some of the most sought-after beach front property in the country, I don't think it's that far out there. Hyatt has two bay front hotels two blocks apart in Corpus Christi, Texas (and if you've ever been to Corpus Christi, you'll know that it's no HH!)

There is an outside possibility that the resorts aren't being sold but that Disney might contract with Marriott to run/manage the resorts for them. Disney would be contracting out the management but not selling the resorts.

I have NOTHING that would suggest this. Just trying to make sense out of the original post since an outright sale just doesn't seem to be that plausible.

I think the original post is odd. Why would someone change their username or a lurker come out with this trying to stir us up? Maybe it really is a regular (since they know Rich) who heard some insider rumor. Who knows?

Despite this, nothing would surprise me these days as far as Disney goes, but it does really seem like the logistics would be a nightmare.

For one, I'd imagine many sole VB and HH members would be pretty darn upset. I know our contacts only guarantee our home resort, but the guides tell us we can book at other DVC resorts, the information you receive really stresses the ability to swap around... I think there are probably many DVC owners out there who just assume from what they saw before they bought that we'd always be able to move around. And I bet many still don't realize that resort hopping could be ended.

Two, I would think this would cause huge negative publicity for the sale of SSR. AND for the image of Disney itself. It is already very fragile.

Third, who would determine what everyone's points are worth to switch into a Marriott system. What a nightmare...

Who knows what the future holds? All I know is I don't feel quite as secure with my purchase as I did when I first bought only a year ago. I think many of us jumped in feeling Disney was a safe bet. With all that is going on with Disney right now.... Well, I hope things change for the best!

Hey, isn't the vote today?!?

I guess if one bougth DVC for the sole purpose of renting points to make money they wouldn't. But if one bought DVC (specifically in this case VB and HH) to actually use it for their own enjoyment and the enjoyment of their family along with exercising their option to trade to other DVC resorts at WDW-again for their own enjoyment-, those people might be a bit more concerned.

I'm not quite sure how you lumped yourself with Rich on this issue...I have been reading this board for over 4 years and I have never seen Richyams say anything other than it was a "possibility" that VB "could" be sold, an assertion, by the way, that virtually everyone agrees with.. . I've never read anything from him saying that the sale was imminent, as you are suggesting.

I've been listening to the meeting for the past 45 minutes, not much mentioned, mostly showing trailers to upcoming movies??

I would not be very pleased with DVC if either HH or VB was sold - I intelluctually understand why they might do it and that they are strictly speaking legally allowed to do so but I would not be pleased as a VB owner (and yes we do stay at VB)

It would not be good PR for Disney to do this

thanks

IF this rumor turns out to be true, the OP would have to be someone with serious inside info. Perhaps DVC or Disney management?

MG

OR works for the buyer...or works for the law firm doing the deal....or works for the audit company doing the books, or knows someone who works for one of those companies. But yes, if it does turn out to be true, Goofy has some sort of access to non-public information.

Can you tell us when this 'announcement' is suppose to be made?

>>Can you tell us when this 'announcement' is suppose to be made?<<

Well, I can confirm it didn't happen at the annual meeting (it just ended, and I listened to the whole 'friggin thing).
