Verandah's large enough to sleep on?

Not to mention the soot that comes down on some of the balconies. We had an extended balcony at the rear of the ship and it was covered in soot every morning. First few days we used a towel to wipe it up but that was messy. After that we left it to the room steward, we just didn't go out there till he was done.
Very good points MunFam.

UGH, I have always wanted a rear facing balcony, but I didn't think of that.

Has your DH been checked for sleep apnea? A sleep apnea machine would stop the snoring.

My CPAP has saved my life, guaranteed, and I sleep soundly now. So does my wife.

Complications from sleep apnea killed Reggie White, the Green Bay Packers' famous "Minister of Defense". If it could take out somebody who ate quarterbacks for lunch it can definitely take out your average man. It's not a threat to your masculinity to admit you have a problem, especially since the alternative is worse. You won't be very masculine when you've had multiple strokes due to apnea complications and somebody winds up having to change your diaper for the rest of your life.

I had also forgotten to mention that if he is worried about going somewhere to take the sleep apnea test at an over night stay, they also offer taking the test at home where they send you the equipment and it sends over the information to them!

I'm a light sleeper too. When I'm sharing a cabin with a snorer, I use earbud headphones and listen to white noise on my phone. It blocks all noise out and I'm in my own little world. I wouldn't depend on him being able to sleep on the veranda. Bring earbuds just in case.
I'm a light sleeper, too. I always bring earplugs and a white noise machine when traveling. You never know about noises on trips.

OP, maybe if he sleeps propped up on pillows instead of lying flat, it might help with the snoring.

You can buy this mouth guard thing that helps stop snoring. My sister uses it when we travel. Its not the most comfortable she says (mouth gets dry as it holds you tongue down) after a few days but usually its only a few nights she uses it so everyone else can also sleep!

Sleep apnea is very serious. My mom's friend had a stroke because of it, and it now completely blind! My dad snored so bad that I couldn't even stay in the room next to him b/c he was so loud. Now that he has his CPAP machine you can't even hear him breathe! Please, please encourage him to get tested. The consequences of having sleep apnea and leaving it untreated are deadly.

We had an extended balcony on the Fantasy which had two full-size lounge chairs plus regular chairs. I slept out here one night and my wife did it a couple of nights. We lucked out and it was perfect weather every night. I wasn't planning on sleeping there the night I did it, went out about midnight and the sound put me to sleep.

We had 9176 on the Fantasy, I had multiple naps on it and slept outside one night - best night's sleep I have had in years! It is an extended balcony, it came with full-length loungers for us (not just chairs that tilted back).
That being said, the weather on our cruise was perfect, nice and cool in the evenings. If it had been really cold or rainy, or really hot, it would not have worked for me the same :)

We had a neighbor die of sleep apnea. Tell him to go get the study for the kids sake. This lady left two young children behind. Her death was totally avoidable.

Yeah, inspired me to use my cpap machine. It was not easy to get used to but breathing is essential!

Geez, I gotta talk to my husband -- you guys have me worried. His snoring is awful and even wakes up the dog!

I have slept on the balcony because I enjoy listening to the waves but I'm not out there all night. I sleep sitting in a chair in the corner so I can use pillows propped against the wall to lean on. Then I use the other chair or table, covered with towel, to prop up my feet. I spend a few hours a night out there.

On Princess cruises, my father used to sleep on the floor of the balcony on top of the comforter.

Word of caution about sleeping on the balcony. I have never had this happen to me but my father has. The window washer machine activated around 3am and soaked him.

Wow, that stinks. Geez, late night people may be sitting on their balconies at that hour. Without warning, that's awful.

Also be aware that if you are pulling into a port the next morning, you may have a ship next door watching you sleep LOL. Our very first cruise we left the drapes open so we could see the ocean and the sun come up. We woke up to people standing on their balconies on the ship next to us looking in. Never did that again!

I've read stories of passengers stepping out of the shower in all their glory and going to the window, opening the curtain (It's not like people can see your stuff when you're at sea) and finding there was a ship directly across from them. I've witnessed one guy's bare butt while on the Fantasy. There was an NCL ship across from us in St. Maarten. He stepped out of the shower in his towel, turned around and dropped the towel, then bent over to get his clothes off of the bed. I can't help but think he did it on purpose, but it was hysterical, as we were just relating the previous stories to PJ, our Concierge Host, while he was taking a break out on deck. He saw it all too that day.

We were told by a CM about a family who left their doors open to hear the ocean and when we docked birds landed on their balcony and got into their room. They said it took all morning to clean up the mess and get all the birds out LOL

Have him do to the sleep study!

My sister was like a freight train and thought it was all nasal related. Not so>

With CPAP she's quiet as a mouse and sleeps through the night.

You can see the 'lounger' type chairs in this photo from a 5e room, 8188 on the Dream taken last February on our cruise.

Well, you can do what I do.
My husband has had surgery that helped the snoring for a few years, now it's back. His sleep study showed no current sleep apnea. He just friggin snores. At home, he sleeps on the couch, his choice, I have offered to switch. Hotels and cruises pose a bit of a problem. Not only does he snore, my 10 y/o son clicks his tongue in his sleep, my 10 y/o daughter talks in her sleep, and my youngest DD snores too. So yay me.
My solution, I bring sleeping pills, sometimes prescribed by my doctor lol. They knock me out and it's only a few days so no addiction to it. Works like a charm.

I'm surprised this is the only response about just snoring.

Definitely do the study but there are a lot of people who just snore. Snoring does not always equal sleep apnea. Everybody who has mentioned a CPAP, do they give these for just snoring? Also you can have sleep apnea without snoring.

While yes, sometimes it IS just snoring (as some have stated on here they experience), when it is so loud that it keeps others around you from sleeping there is often something else going on - usually sleep apnea. And you will only know that with a test.

To my knowledge the machine is only for sleep apnea, but I don't know as I live alone and don't have to deal with it. Pretty sure that the primary way people discover the apnea is because of the loud snoring that as I understand it is usually the way the person starts breathing again after stopping. And I think the machine has something to do with that- but again, not something I have to deal with, so I don't know the details.

Just that loud snoring that is THAT disruptive to those around you at the very least warrants investigation.

Sleep apnea is obstruction of the airway (throat collapsing, typically), causing you to stop breathing. A CPAP is a Continuous Pressure Airway Pump, which provides positive pressure to keep the airway open at all times. I liken it to having an aquarium pump hooked up to my nose, and it works wonders. It is constantly blowing in (A BiPAP alternates to a lower pressure on breathing out, higher pressure on breathing in) and keeping my airway open. I went from as many as 60 apnea events an *hour* to as few as 5 or 6 in a night, max. I wasn't ever getting any real sleep, and now I rarely even change position in the night.
