We just came back from cruising in a family verandah, I haven't been in a regular verandah so I can't compare the two. However we loved the family verandah. The cabin was huge, we did not once feel like we were crammed into a tiny cruise cabin, it felt more like a small hotel room. We are a family of 4, but I wanted the 5th bed because I have a hard time sharing anything less than a king with my husband. We ended up on the 6 night extended due to Matthew Dream and I slept on the murphy bed 2 full nights and about half the night the other nights. While it is open it is in front of the balcony door, but it doesn't block it, you can still get around it to get out to the balcony, we did so every day. What it blocked most was the drawers and cabinet at that end of the cabin, it was hard for us to get our clothes out in the mornings. My in laws were next door in a family verandah that slept 4, they had the couch and an upper bunk but no murphy bed, in place of the murphy bed they had another chair in the room.
