Is there some sort of child-resistant (no such thing as child-proof!) lock/latch on the doors to the verandahs?

There are 2 locks, one on the handle, which must be twisted a 1/4 turn to unlatch, and another one up top, about 8 inches down from the top of the door, which is a knob that must be turned 1/2way around. Also the door is very heavy - almost like suctioned in place. My 2 1/2 year old could not budge it and my 5 1/2 year old had to put his entire weight into it.

You have to be pretty strong to open the door. It is hard to explain how it works, but it would be almost impossible for a small child to muscle it open. You have to hold the handle straight down, and pull it open at the same time. My 9 year old DD could barely do it,. And only after I showed her how. But if the door was not closed all the way, a small child could open it.
Just make sure you always have it closed all the way. Because the verandah does look straight down to the sea. The railing is plexiglass and metal, and over waist high on me. If you would like to see my pics of it email me
( wmiller86@aol.com ) and I will send you the link to my OFOTO pics. When my girls were small, I was the king of overprotection, and I probably would not have been able to relax with any verandah, no matter how safe it was. Just my nature!

If you are in any doubt, get an inside cabin, and relax.

I believe you can also ask your stateroom host to remove the chairs and table out there if you are worried. We gave our kids the "no climbing/standing on the chair or table" warning, but still caught DD2 trying to pull up. She wasn't happy with just looking through the plexiglass.

Thanks for the info! I was sure that was the case, but Mom and grandparents will be much soothed by this info. We'll keep the verandah room--DS is an explorer, but we've dealt with the issue in many hotel stays, and he is respectful of the rules---as long as we are right there with him!
