We adopted another cat and got it from the shelter. The shelter pays for the spaying and we decided to get her declawed at the same time instead of waiting and taking her in for an additional surgery. We picked her up on Tuesday after they had kept her overnight. When we got her home, we noticed that she was sneezing, now one of our other cats is sneezing.

When we originally picked her up from the shelter she had an upper respiratory infection, so my DD took care of her until she was better so that our other 4 cats would not get sick. She has been off meds for 2 weeks, with no sneezing etc. Now we get her back from the vet and she is sick again. I am so mad!!!! My DH says we will never take another animal to this vet. We have our own vet and we have never had a problem with them, but the shelter will only pay for the spaying if you take it to this specific vet.

It was like an assembly line. After I paid the cost of the declawing, they picked up a phone and called back for "w_______ cat with carrier". I was sent to a door to wait and they brought my cat out. I did not see a vet at all.

So hopefully we won't have to take all 4 of the other cats to the vet. Right now I am out of town at my niece's wedding and so my poor DH is having to deal with this. Then when I get home on Sunday, DH is leaving on Monday for a work training in Orlando. I will have to see how the two cats are when I get home and we will decide what to do with the two that are sneezing right now.

I guess I don't see the big deal. :confused3 Cats get colds just like people ~ not a big deal. ;)

My cats had a eye thing-really nasty, all swollen and runny. It was like an assembly line. I only had to take one in, and then called as the other two got it and they all used the same medicine. Good luck.

I don't blame you for being upset. Sneezing in cats can be a sign of serious upper respiratory illness. That's how my cats' bout with feline calicivirus started. I had adopted two kittens who seemed healthy, and had had all their shots(including FVCRP which is supposed to prevent calicivirus) My bengal cat got the virus first and it cost me $500 to get him well. He had mouth ulcers and a high fever. Then my older cat got it and had an ulcer on her nose. Luckily, she recovered with only TLC. Then two months ago, I discovered one of the kittens(now 1 year old) had had it as well at some point. She had developed a bacterial infection from the virus without my knowing. By the time I realized it, she had to have dental surgery and lost all her teeth beyond her fangs---$500 total for all her treatment.

The worst part is that calicivirus is a chronic disease, and the one cat has already had a recurrence($150 this time) Anytime they get stressed, they can shed the virus.

I hope your kitties just have a cold!

Any stress (moving, new owner, and/or surgery) can bring out a latent upper respiratory infection. Your cat was likely exposed to Herpes Virus as a newborn and this most likely would have happened no matter where the surgery was done.
A 24 hour stay is a very unlikely incubation time for a new infection.

Upper Respiratory is very common and is naturally occurring in all cats, just most are able to fend it off. We foster cats for our local humane society and we deal with it all the time. They are in a new place and their immune systems get compromised. Hopefully, they gave you some Clavamox (at least 10 days worth) and it will knock it out. It is triggered by stress or trauma - which would easily be caused by declawing. Did your kitten claw the carpet and furniture like crazy? Is that why you got the new kitten declawed? I don't do it anymore because I saw the procedure and couldn't handle it. Not worth the pain it IMHO causes the cat and they turn into biters because they don't have their natural defenses. :( I think you need to find a different vet regardless. Sending good thoughts to your kitten.

sorry about your kitty. i hope they all feel better soon.

i just adopted a kitten too, and i had to sign a lot of papers promising to never have her declawed or anything like that (she also came spayed, from the Fix It Foundation for 40.00)
