Vent-- If you aren't handicapped do not use the darn sticker

Maybe she needed it an maybe she didn't. It's not for you to judge.

I'm out of here, gotta go get the kids but before I leave I just want to say that I admit that she may have been handicapped and needed that sticker. However there are plenty of people who do use those stickers illegaly none of us have any way of knowing what the case may be here. Just because you are all giving her the benefit of the doubt doesn't make you all right. I may not be right either, just a venting on something that I saw that bothered me.

No, I'm not wrong. I was behind this woman at Lowes. I watched her grab those jugs out of her cart have the cashier scan them and put them back in. I left the store right after her and watched her load them into her car. There was nothing wrong with her, and even if there was she certainly didn't need to take that spot from someone else who needed it more. There was an elderly woman in a wheelchair with an oxygen tank in the store and an elderly man that had trouble walking, from what I witnessed they deserved that spot more then the jugs lady.

You'd be wrong.

Just a little FYI, delete your post because you'll be getting points for a personal attack when you call someone a troll. :rolleyes1

You do know that you use more of your body than just your arms when you lift heavy items right?

Or she could have borrowed someone elses car, or sticker too. I have no problem judging.

Oh and the store only had 2 handicapped spots.

No way a Lowe's only had TWO handicapped spots.

Lung Cancer. Someone with lung cancer can lift 5lbs, but can not walk because it can become hard to breath. I had an uncle who had a handicap plate for just this reason.

Your post made me curious about how much 1 gallon of water weighs, its 8.35lbs. One of her jugs would have weighed 5 times that, she had 2.

I pray that, for your sake, what you took from this thread is that MOST people don't judge like you, and that one day, because of that, if you are unfortunate enough to NEED a handicapped sticker yourself, or God forbid one of your CHILDREN, someone isn't staring at and judging YOU or one of YOUR kids for maybe having a disability.

I know what I'm talking about because I know what I saw her do and I will stand behind what I said, that woman did not need to park in that spot, whether or not she needed that sticker.
Just as I don't know what I'm talking about neither do any of you, there is in fact a chance that she wasn't handicapped and was using that sticker/tag just to get a primo spot ;)
You totally contradicted yourself in your response. :rolleyes1

When you get your medical degree and evaluate this person, then I will believe you when you say that she did not need that spot. Until then, why don't we let HER doctor make the determination as to where she can park. :thumbsup2

I'm aware of how to lift things. Thanks. ;)

It very well may not have been hers. Since you didn't ask her we will never know.

I have no problem judging either

A store that size and the only have 2 handicap spots? They should have more.

Next time, please speak to the person and ask what their handicap is. Then we can all determine if she is justified in using a handicap spot or is she is cheating. Thanks. :)

before my dad was permenently off his feet with MS there would be times where he could walk just fine. He would have to use a walker then a wheelchair then could walk just fine and that is really how it was for years. He has had a handicap placecard and license plate sense around the time he was diagnosed. During the times where he could walk you really couldn't "see" what he had..

I'm guessing though that when your dad could walk just fine, he probably wouldn't use a handicapped spot to be closer to the store?
Some of the grocery stores around here have expectant mother parking, but I never use it. I don't have any discomfort or issues that limit me physically when pregnant, but I know some women do, and I save those spots for people who might need them.
I'm not saying that we know for sure from what the OP said that this lady misused the parking space, but we don't know she didn't either. People do misuse them and it's sad. I have a relative who has a handicap that does not limit their ability to walk, and they always park in these spots. I feel like that's kind of wrong, just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Yes, only 2 by the main entrance. There could have been more near the garden center entrance or the other construction entrance, there could have been another entrance in the back with more, I don't know it was the first time I've been to this Lowes.

My normal Lowes has more than 2 spots.

Your *opinion* does not trump the doctor's diagnosis that allowed the person to get the permit/placard.

My father had an ignorant busy-body tell him that he didn't need his placard last week. Like the alleged miscreant in the OP, my dad was unloading his full cart including dog food and kitty litter bags into the back of the car. He lives alone and doesn't have anyone to shop for him. What the busy-body didn't know is that my father has a disintegrated hip, screwed up back, and terminal kidney disease. He *looks* fine, but he really doesn't need to schlep to the hinterlands of the parking lot. What my father should have told the fool was, "I got my bad hip, bad back, and kidney disease from jumping out of airplanes and being sprayed with Agent Orange while in the Army protecting your right to say something stupid. Next time, I'd rather you just say thanks."

Live and let live.

Thank your father for being such a brave man.

The same with my Dad you can't tell why he needs it. My Mom well she is in a wheelchair and has oxygen.

OP, really it is not your business. My father can lift heavy items. He is very strong willed. But he needs his handicap spot and medic alert bracelet. He doesn't look like he does. But it is not anyones business but his.

My grandmother once laid into a person once because she thought they didn't need the handicap spot as much as other people did. The woman was with her husband who turned out to be a cop. Needless to say he let my grandmother know her judgment (which was wrong by the way) was not appreciated and my grandmother ended up looking like a major jerk.

Ever since witnessing this I make no judgments on why someone has the placard. I figure, if they didn't need it the doctor wouldn't give it to them in the first place. Plus if they are using someone else's placard illegally karma will get to them in the end and there is no point expending any of my energy on them.

He could probably have lifted 40lbs (twice), but would still have had a hard time breathing walking very far.

Who are we to judge? Unless you are intimately familiar with the individual's health, you have no idea.

Why waste your time worrying about what other people are doing, anyway?

DD had one for quite sometime - due to disabilities you might not necessarily be able to "see".. Also, it was not an easy thing to obtain - she required written statements from 2 different doctors before it was issued..

If she was having a "good" day, she could probably park in a regular spot, but by the time she left the store she would be in agony and would probably have to spend the next week or so flat on her back in bed.. Would you be able to "see" that agony? Probably not - because she has always masked her pain quite well because she doesn't want pity from others and prefers to be as independent as physically possible..

At this point she still qualifies for the handicap tag, but chose on her own not to have it renewed - due to the nasty looks and comments she has received in the past..

I think you're being terribly unfair in judging someone based only on what you saw.. If it's that important to you, maybe the next time you should ask the person what their disability is - and if they need your assistance.. It would be much nicer than the kind of treatment my DD often received..:sad2:

I have end stage renal disease...
OP thanks for letting me know that if I get to the point where I am out of breath from walking a distance that someone will be sure to judge me for taking a handicapped space...

Right now I look perfectly fine but I am very ill.... the effects of my illness are not visible... but they are VERY real!!

:sad2:

Do you understand the concept of torque? If not, why don't you take a moment to google; you should then comprehend why someone with a disabled lower body could still lift the weight you're talking about.

After that I suggest you get off your high horse and onto your knees and thank whatever deity you believe in that your problems are so few and far between that you can take the time to post about stuff like this on a disney board. Your judgemental ignorance is sickening. I hope if your family is ever struck with any tragedy or sickness you encounter strangers with more kindness in their heart than you're offering.

Are all of you that are bashing the OP so naive as to believe that abuse of the of the handicap parking sticker doesnt happen and may be happening in the instance of the OP post?

Geeze there sure a bunch of holier than thou's on here. I always love the irony here when someone comes and posts and gets accused of being so judgemental, who are we to judge yada yada yada. You all realize you are doing the same thing. Typical DIS

This post is my favorite of the bunch ;)

Oh I know for a fact it happens! There is a girl on one of my kid's sports team, her father is in a wheelchair and of course they have a handicapped sticker. However, the father is not able to attend many games/tournaments due to other medical issues yet the mom always uses the handicapped placard to get the closest parking spot. They have a wheelchair accessible van, but she uses it on her other vehicle. Especially at tournaments, we often have to park far away due to the number of teams involved, and she will brag how she used her husband's placard to park close. :sad2: (She is not disabled herself.)

I find this sad because she copuld be depriving someone who really needs the spot. I would think she would have more empathy being that her husband is disabled.

In our state it is just a hangtag so it's easy to transfer from one vehicle to another.

Edited to add, other than people I know personally, I can't say who needs it or not and I don't judge someone for parking there even if they look "okay".

Come on now, lay off the OP. I don't believe for a second that if any person saw a woman in a wheelchair with O2 that couldn't get a Handcapped spot and then saw that the person who did was doing the Poland Spring Olympics you wouldn't be a little miffed. Sure the Olympic lifter could very well have issues etc. but one would probably conclude that if they were able to lift so much and walk at a brisk pace etc. that maybe parking one or two spots over wouldn't have killed them. The person in the wheelchair would have much more difficulty with that. Sure, if you have the placard it is your right etc. but I think the OP just felt bad for the woman who very obviously needed that spot. Most people (I don't care how anyone denies it) would probably have the same thought.

I'm absolutely not naive to this. However, I do not have the medical background to assess whether an individual I see shopping in the store does or does not have a disability. Nor have I been appointed as the police for violators.
