Vegas: Disney Employee Among the Victims & Disney Vigilence

this has been on my mind since yesterday: when events like this happen, does Disney do anything to increase their vigilance, screening etc...?
Disney constantly monitors world events and security issues. They adjust their security practices as appropriate. You and I will never know the actual security processes in place though. They don't explain their security practices so as not to give the bad guys an edge.

How many?

I could go get an entry job with disney security today and be a supervisor in probably a year. That's not a stretch. And I've never been near quantico
I agree that many of the bag checkers or people operating the metal detection machine are pretty much the same amount of security as Walmart greeters (the ones we saw are not armed and they are not going to be able to physically restrain or chase a likely suspect). However, DH does know that many retired FBI agents work for Disney security.

That's a bit naive. Most of "disney security" show up and park next to the popcorn vendors with lunch pail and walk through the same doors to go work a shift.

I'm sure they have very trained/experienced consultants and managers that far exceed normal mortals...but every time a security issue is raised, people start trying to make out security to be trained like swat...come...on...now. Keep you feet on the ground.

We just returned from a week long trip at the parks. I thought security was great.

Everyone was checked before entering transportation at the TTC. We were bagless and had to go through metal detectors each time, as did random people who had gone through bag check.

There were police with dogs outside the ttc (I assume they were bomb dogs, but could have been drug dogs, idk).

The security lines moved much more quickly and efficiently than when it was directly in front of MK entrance, and while there was still a large crowd, there was also a large armed security presence and plenty of places to run and hide.

Ultimately, if someone wants to do something horrible, they will find a way, whether that be flying an airplane into a building, shooting up a concert, bombing a marathon, driving a car into a crowd, etc. I'm a worrier, and a million scenarios of what a crazy person might do to attack Disneyworld have run through my mind, and ultimately there is just no way to defend against every possible threat.

So we go to the parks, have a blast, and take comfort in the fact that this likely isn't the day that someone will act on their plans. Statistically many other things are more likely to kill me before a terrorist attack at the happiest place on earth.

I'll concede that point...but the vast majority are mall cops and it's hard for the smart ones to cover 27 square miles if something were to happen.

Fair enough...

Actually you and I think alike...in most ways.

I don't want bag checks or Mickey cops in front of the parks...becuses I don't like those around feeling too safe and walking around unaware. Much like the excellent campaigns about public awareness that have been carried out effectively in NYC since 2001. Nobody should ever give their brain/logic a day off.

But I don't think kooks with machine guns is "liberties"...that's where we may differ.

actually I don't think we differ. I'm not a gun owner, I don't see a need for machine guns (but apparently the guy yesterday modified his heavily), but I do respect the rights of those who want to hunt or protect themselves.

When I use the term 'liberties' for my own person, it means that I don't want to be told that I can't bring a simple thing as a stroller b/c someone at some point may or may not think one can be made into a weapon. Because where does it end? we have already had an attempted shoe bombing and I can strangle you with my belt...so will the future for every Disney guest to be giving a tamper-free jumpsuit to court the parks in 'just because of (insert idiot terror act here)'?

Liberties to me mean allowing a sane, innocent person the ability to move freely and enjoy life based on the idea that I do not intend anyone harm. And while the reality is that there are people who do, we cannot base society around hiding from shadows and limiting everyones freedoms over the idea that there are crazy people out there.

Again the visible security measures are for show. Real bad guys aren't going to have something in a bag or stroller, they would use an air vehicle or a truck to enter the property or parks.

I never went through a metal detector. And I went bag-less twice. My friend had a bag each time, and went through a metal detector twice. This was over 6 days, 9 park entries.

Not once was I asked to get up from my scooter. Not once was I wanded. Not once did I receive more than a quick glance in the back pocket of my scooter. And other than at Food and Wine, where cops were looking for drunks, I never saw an armed security presence.

And before people assume that I just lack situational awareness, I don't. I grew up with a father that was a security nut. And I lived in places where I needed to be aware. I tend to notice when people have earbuds or are dressed to conceal their weapon.
