Veepstakes, McCain edition

Whoever the pick, it has to allow McCain to get back on the "Straight Talk Express". Obama chose his pitbull. Obama can now keep preaching about how wonderful the world would be if only .... (Ok, I'm a little fuzzy on the "if only" part. But it's good to know whatever "if only" is, it going to make the world wonderful)

So with Biden free to attack McCain in a way Obama could never be seen to be doing, McCain has to get back to what he does best. He needs to free himself to rise above the fray as well. Powell and Romney don't have the heart to be Republican pit bulls. Its too bad Guliani showed himself to be such an ineffective campaigner. I would suggest Cheney, but I don't know if that's allowed.

If he really wanted to get things riled up he would get someone like Rick Santorum. There is a subset of Democrats whose heads would literally explode if Santorum was chosen. So that would take their votes away from Obama. But Santorum makes the ideal attack dog and he knows how to get Republicans riled up and ready to vote. Santorum as VP would also give McCain more incentive not to die once in office. That's also a good thing.

I agree that Biden will be effective playing the bad cop, but what about during debates between Obama and McCain?? I think Obama has recently demonstrated that he can come out more as a fighter, and I don't know that he should completely retreat back into winks and smiles.

Interesting -- I always like to hear from people who have actually met politicians. While I think the issues are of utmost importance, I can't neglect the personality of the candidate. After all, half the stuff that comes out of their mouths is just done for political expediency.

OK, while these stories can be fun in a gossipy sort of way, I have to caution people about the conclusions they like to draw. I'm sure Biden isn't much fun to hang out with and maybe Obama never stops looking in a mirror. I don't know, I've never met either man.

But McCain supporters are advised not to make conclusions based on a few encounters. If John McCain were to be similarly judged, he might not come out so well. I like the man personally, but there is a side of his personality that seems quite testy and impatient if you to only see that side of the man.

I think there's a lot of pressure to pick Romney. I'd really like to see a woman on the ticket...either ticket. Makes me mad....they politician's want our vote, but then pat us on the head and tell us to go back to the kitchen.

Okay, while I said that issues were of utmost importance - I also think that personal character cannot be ignored, especially if you have had a personal encounter with one of these people. I, for one, would never vote for Fred Thompson- - even though he is a conservative. I also wouldn't vote for Harold Ford Jr. - he shares the God-complex. Actually, I do know someone who has met with John & Cindy McCain (he's not a McCain supporter) and he has said that McCain is a genuinely honest and honorable man.
