VB is closed until OCT 31

It's unfortunate they got hit so hard :( but thanks for the information Pat.

Since it looks like VB will be unavailable for 10% or more of this year, how will DVC balance the point usage out? There are more points distributed than can be used, so don't they have to do something with them?

Per contract if a timeshare unit goes down. The points for the timeshare are to be suspended until the timeshare unit is up and running.

That is the same message that was on the WDW website before VB re-opened on 9/20. It was wrong then and I am hoping it is wrong now since we have reservations there starting 10/9. I'm waiting until tomorrow to call MS and see what is really happening. I wouldn't be surprised if it was closed until 10/31, but that is an old (or maybe new now) message.

Actually, there was an interim message that stated VB would be closed until 10/9 -- so the one saying that it will be closed until 10/31 is new! Now whether it's correct or not is another matter!!

I called MS today, and they said my Oct 24 - 28 VB ressie would have to be canceled or rescheduled for a later date. :(

I called MS about my Oct 8-Oct 11 Vero reservations. The CM told me that they aren't taking reservations for anything prior to Nov. 1. She cancelled my reservations quickly and reinstated my points--no holding account. The conversation was really quick and she said she didn't have any other informtion.

So let me ask again: DVC has distributed the normal allotment of points for 2004. But the resort will be closed for 15% or so of the year. So that's 15% of the points that were distributed that cannot be used this year. A little less, because October is low season. Still, that's a lot of points.

If all of those points are banked into 2005, won't that be a problem next year? If all of those points get used elsewhere, isn't that a problem too?

What I find somewhat amuzing is the letter I just received over the weekend about the resort being opened back up, and all damage repaired from Frances. Spoke too soon, I guess.

Good question. If I was in the mood I would scour the POS looking for info, but I don't feel like it right now... :teeth:

I see your point Jimbo, and believe me when I tell you, I'm not a math wiz, but doesn't it seem that it's 15% of one smallish resort (we're not talking OKW or SSR numbers) and that there would have to be some sort of buffer built in to support something like this. After all, it isn't that 15% of all DVC resorts are closed, and 15% of the total points have to be redistributed somewhere in the system in the next year, it's 15% of one small resort.

I would think that either they would plan for something like this or that it may fall under some force majeure clause somewhere where they don't have to worry about it.

Disney's Vero Beach Resort remains closed temporarily to complete a full assessment of the storm's impact to the property and move forward with recovery efforts. Clients with Disney's Vero Beach Resort reservations for stays through Oct. 31, 2004 are being contacted about the opportunity to transfer their reservations, rebook for future dates or cancel their reservations without penalty.

There are so many factors that go into this that I think it's hard for us to determine the impact. I would suspect that because members all have their own Use Year that this might help lessen the impact of people banking the points. Currently, there are no restrictions on banking points so it would have been theoretically possible for all Vero DVC owners to bank their points even the hurricane didn't occur. If Disney sees a problem building, they might release some of the inventory they own for member use. They might also use unsold units at SSR. Once again, we have to put a bit of trust into DVC's management to handle the situation.

I would try to make my reservations as soon as plans are known. Last minute inventory may be harder to come by, especially if people reschedule their current plans for the immediate future.

Besides, aren't some of those points already spent if they were borrowed into a previous year? I really don't think there will be a big impact here.
