Well I got to pay my very first value added tax today. At the tanning bed. 10%. I was so mad. Next they will be taxing me for having red hair.

well see, the red hair you can't avoid. The tanning bed you can totally avoid.

Stop going. Not only will you not have to pay the tax, you won't have to worry about getting skin cancer.

problem solved

It makes me mad too. Just another way to take more of our hard earned money and send it unwisely.

That's not a VAT tax. That was part of the healthcare bill. A VAT is if, say, a company buys some cotton and then makes it into jeans. When they sell the jeans they have to pay tax on the 'value added,' the difference in value between the pieces and the product.

Since healthcare is going public, maybe this is their way of trying to keep down people tanning and therefore keep down the amount they'll have to pay on cancer treatment? :confused3

I don't mind it at all, just like I don't mind taxation on alcohol and cigarettes, though I am not a consumer of the latter.

Totally agree that VAT sucks and hoping it never makes it way to the US! Having said that, the 10% tax on tanning beds is part of Obamacare - it (among other taxes) were added to help pay for his vision of health care overhaul.

It replaced the 5% tax for cosmetic surgery that was originally part of the bill.

1) You did not pay a VAT tax.
2) You paid a surcharge (eg. penalty) tax for tanning beds.
3) It was in the Obama Care.
4) VAT (value added tax) is different
. . . each operation adds the tax for the value they added
. . . when it gets to final consumer, the consumer pays all the tax
5) VAT simple example
. . . manufacturer adds $10 value, and 6¢ tax (6% tax)
. . . painter adds $5 value and 3¢ tax
. . . store add $5 value and 3¢ tax
. . . consumer pays $20 and 12¢ accumulated VAT tax

Since we Americans are apparently too dumb to manage our own lives, maybe they should also add on an extra tax for fast food, candy and pop.

Sigh, don't give em any ideas. They come up with enough of this crap on their own. Anybody else lately feel like they have been sold down the river. Worked all my life and now can not afford to retire. I have to have a job just to buy gas for my car...so I can get to the store, the doctor and the drugstore. It's really getting sad and scary out there folks and there's no end in sight.

I've heard a fast food tax discussed, as well as more aggressive taxation on alcohol and cigarettes. It doesn't bother me because it doesn't impact me, and I'd rather have negative choices taxed than my income!

This time it doesn't bother you but what if the next thing is something you like? This is a bigger issue. My guess is not everyone at the Boston Tea Party actually liked tea, ya know.

Just wait. Obama care is also going to add a 40% premium tax to all "cadillac" plans. A cadillac plan has not yet been defined. It is anticipated by some that this description will be adjusted to encompass most plans so that we're paying thru the nose for our insurance and most companies drop coverage and we'll all be forced to take the national plan.

I'm well aware of the implications and potential future implications of my political choices (and not just the ones around taxing certain luxuries), but thanks for your concern.

I don't like the idea of federal healthcare, but if it's going to happen I don't have a problem with this tax being attached to it. We have enough other insane things going on in our government, I would venture that more taxation is inevitable and ultimately going to impact something everybody likes.
