Valuable Lessons Learned...

during these economically challenging times. We learned a really valuable lesson in life. My DH and I made very good money a few years ago when the economy was booming.. I worked in the housing industry and he worked in the automotive industry, both had our jobs almost 20 years so we built a new home, bought a new car, and DVC. Things were good. Then the economy took a turn for the worst. I lost my job, but found another one within a few months for half of what I was making, so my husband took a couple extra shifts here (part time job) and there to make ends meet. Then it happened. My DH lost his job. Mind you both companies we worked for up and closed.:sad2: Now, he has taken his part time job to full time for which we are very thankful. But now we are both making only half of what we did and our monthly expenses have not changed. So things are extremely tight. We paid off our CC's thankfully and have not had to touch any of our 401k's so we should be okay. But it has taught us a few things:

1) We are a solid team.
2) Nothing in Life is guaranteed.
3) Never to buy anything we cannot pay cash for!

Just thought I would share this because we learned the hard way what alot of you already know. I just wish that someone else can learn from our experience and listen to you guys.

Thanks again for listening. You guys rock!

Been there done that.
Had a great job at a college Heatlth Center. Also picked up a part time job during the off semesters at a nearby drug and alcohol rehab facility. Made over $38 an hour.
Didn't have money put away for DVC but bought it anyway. Did WDW at least 4 times a year so it would be worthwhile in the long run. and I was making enought that I could handle the mortgage for that without a problem.
Got cancer, got neuropathy and lymphedema, had to go on disability.
Just sold my SS DVC last week, waiting for the check to come so I can pay off my WL DVC and not have that expense anymore. At least I can still visit WDW a few times a year if I am careful with my points.
Refinanced my house to pay off some bills incurred when I was ill and waiting for disability to go through.
Never will I use credit to get me through, if I can't afford it I won't get it.

Good advice. DH and I experienced a tough economic time right after 9/11 and this put us in the same frame of mind early on in our marriage. We refused to upgrade our lifestyle with every raise and I feel much better about our finances than ever before. We are both in fields that are experiencing growth, fortunately, but know that jobs come and go. Our family is the one constant that we enjoy and build our life around.

The other thing we value is education, which we have both pursued as adults. The extra effort will some times give you an extra edge in the competitive market. Of course even that isn't guaranteed, but we found that DH got more calls for interviews post 9/11 with his bachelor's than his collegues without them.

Good luck to your family!

Thanks everyone! I know that things are going to be tough for a while. And I have all the confidence in my Husband that he will provide for us. That being said I am starting my AS in Accounting in the FALL and will continue to a 4 year school thereafter to try to ensure a more secure future. We have also decided that we will more than likely sell our BVC and then use our proceeds to payoff our SSR alleviating that payment as well. In the meantime, we are praying for an economic turnabout so that we along with thousands of others can earn an honest days pay for an honests day's work. It stinks to wear grown up pants, but as I stated we wouldn't have learned these lessons otherwise. And it is important for my DD to see and learn from us how we handle challenges and money. :)

BTW, not that it matters, but we did use DVC points for the cruise, so it is already taken care of. Otherwise, It would be on hold as well.

Thanks again for all of your prayers and well wishes and advice on this board!
