says their shouldn't be shame, but I think I feel like in her case, she cant have it both ways. I have read two books of hers that were almost a self tribute to her weight loss and maintenance. I think the weight she has put on is not just from not exercising for three months. That could make you soft but not fat imo. I also think when you go on the cover of people magazine in a bikini boasting about a weight loss, you can't expect that the media won't come down on you when you get fat again. Yes of course its hard to keep weight off in your 50's I am experiencing that right now....but, she sure soaked up the attention when she got thin. Unreasonable that she wouldnt expect attention now....
I hate when I read books where its like someone has found the answer, and then its like, oh sorry nevermind I didnt. I read a Bethanny Frankle book about finding and keeping the perfect relationship. I know, I guess I need to stop reading celebrity books, I won't a) waste my time and b) be disappointed

I do feel for her.

Her commitment was to Jenny Craig and most of what she was flaunting was based on her contract from them.

I was a radio spokesperson for Jenny Craig on my station YEARS ago (in the 90s). They are very strict and will drop you in a second if you don't follow their protocol. I lost the weight and as soon as my station lost the acct they stopped paying for my food. The first week they wanted me to pay for it was EIGHTY DOLLARS.:furious: I never spend that much on just me, so I quit.

The counselor told me in confidence that they are trained to drain the last time out of their customers, I have very little respect for their business dealings. Not sure if they are the same way now, this was before my son was born and he's now 21.

And not getting your heart rate up CAN make you gain weight, what makes you think it can't? If I don't exercise AND watch what I eat, I can gain a significant amount of weight in 3 months, like she did. She and I have similar builds and age so I definitely can relate.

So many things work for different people. The problem with package food you have to depend on it and not learn how to prepare for yourself. So you haven't learned how to make portions for yourself. I don't want things that work for stars. I don't idolize them. I don't read all those books or magazines. Their stories change all the time.

Meh, I still wouldn't look away if she were undressing in front of me :thumbsup2

The thing is, ALL the research on weight loss programs says that most of them can work, but it's temporary. The vast majority of the people who lose weight on ANY program will gain it back eventually. I don't think there is any point in blaming someone - she's simply part of the majority.

I think she still looks great regardless of her weight. I have had a weight problem all my life. I wish I could look as good as she does.

I agree with you OP.
I had a serious foot injury, a fracture followed by a Neuroma....
I was a year before my foot was as close to normal as it will ever be.

I didn't gain 40 pounds.

There are just to many 'excuses'.

Weight is all about issues INSIDE.
Not a temporary injury.

Now, I am not about shaming.
I think fitmom has serious toxic psych. issues.

But, you are right...
How can somebody like Valerie have it both ways.
Doesn't work for me.

I would have thought it was funny if she had been smug about her weight loss. She didn't come off that way to me so I wish her the best.

Agree with this. OTOH, there are those who are a wee bit too smug and I wouldn't mind seeing them knocked down a peg or two.

I am curious to see if the winner of the Biggest Loser "holds" at a 20 pound weight gain.

I can totally relate to her situation. I injured my Achilles heel two years ago. I couldn't workout for 6 months. I put on 20+ pounds. it was a combo of not being vigilant with diet (boredom eating is a weakness for me) and inactivity and age. Let's face the older you get your metabolism slows down no matter what for most people.

I'm sure with time she will lose the weight and I am rooting for her. I know I was sensitive to my weight gain and I didn't have the media criticizing me.

I always saw her as sweet and adorable and I was happy for her. My son is a BIG fan and has loved her since Touched By an Angel. Smug can be relative, based on how you feel about yourself.

I really don't see it as a double standard. She worked hard to lose weight and she looked great. Many people out there loved her and were happy for all she achieved. Others out there really struggle with weight and were encouraged by her story. No matter the reason, it made people feel good to read about her weight loss and it made her feel good. Now she has gained some of it back. Personally, I think she still looks excellent. That said, she has gained some of it back. Do people think she doesn't know and that she needs to be told? I assure you, she knows. Do they think it benefits society to show us that she gained weight back? Maybe in a slight way in that it reminds us that she is human and will yoyo on her weight as well. Other than that, though, there is no benefit. Posting negative stories about people is just that - negative. It doesn't make someone feel good. It doesn't inspire anyone. It's just negative reporting so that people can take some sick pleasure in someone else's negative experience. I see no need for that. But, that's just my opinion. YMMV.

Shes probably gonna get thin again but just the same I like the look when women carry some weight on them, who wants skin and bones by there side

I think the bolded is the only true & relevant sentence. Were you really looking for solutions from these two women? I can't believe you wasted the time reading 3 books by people who are non-experts in ANY field.

haha I know right. I wont argue. I read the Valerie books cause I had always been a fan, and I read the Bethanny book because one of the relationships she discusses in the book is with someone I "know" personally. So it wasnt exactly like I read the books looking for advice, but thats what the books turned out to be, partially anyway. And neither celebrity was able to follow their own advice apparently. I will say those were when I first got my kndle, and my reading selections I think have gotten better. BYW the person I am looking at now for fitness advice is Denise Ausitn. never paid attention to her before, but darn she looks great in her mid 50's. I dont imagine we will see her packing the pounds on.

I don't think so either!! I like Denise Austin; however, I have a hard to following "advice" from anyone whose day job is fitness. I mean, being a fitness guru is her job. She works it all day, every day. Most of us normal folks cannot do the things she does. Sure, we can do parts of it and that always helps.

I like reading "advice" or stories from real women who've manager to overcome weight and stress. Women in their 40s and 50s with kids, full time jobs and all the added stress of that, and who don't have so much money that they can have cooks and specialized trainers. I mean, if I could have the meals made for me as well as be coached to my personal fitness needs several times a week, I think I'd be better of too.

agreed and I think maybe thats why its so disappointing that Valerie fell off the wagon. I understand the broken foot thing but, diet wise I imagine she would have a lot more choices for easier healthy eating than us regular folks do even if she had to hire a chef. One think I remember reading her first book is the grueling amount of exercise she did to get in bikini shape. She had one of Jillian Michaels trainers working with her...but I was thinking, she would never be able to maintain that level of exercise and lead a normal life too. So when I saw her on her tv show looking fine but not as svelte I wasnt surprised. I dont think she maintained that publicized bikini body very long but she looked good and healthy. Its only now that she seems to be looking officially chubby. Maybe when she takes it back off, she will write another book lol. Could it all be a publicity stunt???
