Vacation ideas.

I'm considering a long weekend getaway for my wife and I. Looking to do something different. We've been to Vegas and new York. We just got back from Disney with the kids. We're going to myrtle beach next month. So, it's time for someone for us.

I have enough credit card rewards points for 2 round trip tickets and a car rental anywhere in the upper 48 states. So, that part is taken care of. Hotel room and attractions are what I need to consider when it comes to budget.

But for now, I'm looking for suggestions of where to go. I know it a broad question but I'd love some ideas.

Is there some place that you'd really like to see or some activity you'd really like to do?

I have been using Marriot brand hotels recently, found that the prices are consistant and their facilities are always clean and kept up and very comfortable.

I had thought about the rocky mnts. But was really just looking for ideas. West coast would be fun but this will only be a 3 or 4 day vacation.

My DH & I love going to new places, but we are on a tight budget this year due to previous job loss. This year we are going to Shenandoah Valley, spending a day in the caverns & driving Skyline Drive. The Smokey Mountains are also very nice. Not sure where your coming from or what your in to.

I'm really not sure how to help you, we haven't been to the mountains, yet. We've not been out West either. I don't fly, so it's hard to go alot pof places and with DH having a full time job on second/third shift and working different days of the week than I do and also being an Army Reservist, our time is limited.

DH and I love to explore new places. So far this year, we have been to Hilton Head Island, SC; Mobile, AL; and Biloxi, MS. The only one I was really impressed with was Hilton Head Island, we stayed at the Disney Vacation Club Resort there in January. I want to go back in warmer weather.

Dh has mentions going to Chattanooga in the next couple of weeks, we have only been there once for a few hours. We want to go back for at least a day or two to explore more.

I saw you mentioned the Rocky Mountains. There are some beautiful resorts in CO. You can explore the area, go on a picnic or horseback ride. If you are feeling adventourious you can do some beautiful white water rafting.

Wanting to do the West Coast? Tour San Francisco or Napa Valley. Rent a convertible and enjoy the scenery.

I can't say enough about San Diego. So much to do and see and just walk around and enjoy the atmosphere.

We had a lovely long weekend in Philly lastyear. We enjoyed some fine dinning as well as history tour stuff.

We loved New England going up in Mass and though Ct. Beautiful and easy drive and a varied amount of things you can do depending on your interests.

We've rented cabins in the Smoky Mountains and had a romantic weekend with a hot tub and a fireplace outside drinking champagne.

Go to the big city of Chicago and treat yourself to a show or baseball game and some fine dinning.

Have you been to the Southwest? I just moved out here not too long ago. It's hot as all get out but it's gorgeous in its own right. You go to the Painted Desert or tour Phoneix/Tuscon.

I love going away for short weekends and have a never ending list of places. Happy planning.

I second a trip to Colorado! We LOVE the crisp cold air, mixed with the gorgeous mountains. Very romantic & beautiful beyond words We've been in the summer & skiing in the winter. Both times of the year were amazing.

I think you would love a trip to San Francisco but 3-4 days won't be enough. Monterey is about 1.5 hours south of SF & it's a nice, slower paced oceanside town that has some good restaurants, a Fisherman's Wharf, whale watching excursions, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Pebble Beach golf course, and the famous Cannery Row. You could drive down Pacific Coast Hwy 1 to Big Sur & eat at Nepenthe, a yummy restaurant with an amazing view. The cliffs & shorelines to Big Sur are some of the most beautiful pictures I've ever taken. The waterfall at Julia Pfeiffer Burns park is indescribable!

Lots of free attractions in DC. Hotel will cost you, and the weather's hot and humid.

San Diego would be nice this time of year.

Lots of interesting stuff to see in Boston.

What about San Antonio? We really enjoyed our vacation there last summer. There is so much to do downtown along the River Walk.

Depending on where you live. West coast if you're close by...I second San Fran or Napa Valley driving up the coast, but long weekend isn't enough time. A cabin in the Smokies with a hot tub and no one around for miles!

Wow, thanks. Tons of great suggestions. I'll have to look into a few of them and narrow it down.

Btw I am in GA. I'm a bit hesitant to go to the west coast it's because this will be a thurs - sun trip and the time difference on Sunday will be rough.

I forgot, we have been to San Antonio. And this will probably be in August or september so I'd hate to go from one hot place to another.

That's why I was kinda leaning towards Colorado. It's not too far west and I think e weather would be OK.

Wife has talked about DC but wants to take the kids there in a few years.

Smokey mnts would be nice but how do they compare to the rocky mnts? Also that's within driving distance so I could do that another time, maybe.

How the Smokey Mountains compare to the Rockies. They don't. Both are beautiful but they are hills in comparison.

My parents did a 4 day trip to Colorado Springs and they loved it. It's very pretty.

Yes, come to Colorado!! August can still be hot if you are in town, but no humidity!

I third San Francisco or San Diego. The time change on Sunday would be worth it for the awesome weather and sights. I love SF.

I know you said lower 48, but you could fly to Buffalo and drive up to Toronto?

How about in the U.P. of Michigan. Up by Lake Superior. You can rent a cabin and look for rocks, seaglass and driftwood... lots of nature things to do..

I grew up in the East Bay, about 20 miles from San Francisco. The weather there is fantastic, there are so many things to do right there. Fishermans wharf, golden gate park, museums, seafood, etc.

I would say with a short trip however, that trying to also go to Napa and/or Monterey may be a bit tiring, as they are destinations within themselves. There is a lot of traffic throughout the bay area, to get into and out of San Francisco. You will find a LOT to entertain you, if you choose to travel to San Francisco. It is also very romantic!!

If you don't want to travel that far, I second Colorado Springs, as it is gorgeous there. Another place I am interested in going is Niagara Falls. That could be a lot of fun also!

Have a wonderful time, I live in TX, and would not take a trip to San Antonio in August to see the river walk!! It is WAY too HOT!!! Although I will go to Orlando in August.
