OK, fellow Atkids -

How did you survive the theme parks and stay on plan? I have (for the most part) accepted this as a way of life - and I think I'll be ok around desserts - but all the sandwiches/convience foods with breading etc...

I was looking at menus for different WDW dining locations, and a good majority of the food seems to be breaded, sandwiched, or "pastaed"

We are traveling with the silver plan which includes 2 meals a day (i KNOW - expensive use of wishes - but easier with 2 teenage boys! They don't/won't even know their wishes can be used for other things.) The meal includes appetizer, entree, dessert and beverage (tax and gratuity too).

If I go off plan, but still try to avoid the obvious carbs (the evil white foods) will I be ok with all the extra walking? (I'm a couch potato - go to curves 3 X a week and that's it for now)

I still have a long ways to go (95 lbs to goal) and don't want to mess up my loss so far (22 lbs on atkins - 33 lbs total)

Thanks for any advice you can give me!

We went on a cruise to Alaska a few weeks ago with some days in Vancouver prior. It was tough to stick to atkins-esp. in Vancouver, because everything was as you said "breaded, pastaed (good word). " We gave up on the 2nd day of the cruise, mainly because we didn't want to feel deprived. I gained about 6+, DH almost 10. When we came back, we both went on strict induction and appear to have lost everything we gained. I think if you do reasonably well--and avoid those high carb, low nutrition stuff, with all the walking, it will probably balance out. Good luck and have fun.

I don't know why I can stay on plan while at WDW but I do. It doesn't feel as though I'm being deprived, either.

I just take off the bun when I eat a sandwich and make sure that anything I order contains no sugar or other refined carbohydrates. It is surprisingly easy to do that, at least for me :)

If you go to www.WDWIG.com I believe if you go to the dining section, there will be a sidebar with a list. Look for the one that says low carb and check out the food choices.

That said, I am not planning to be super strict with my diet while on vacation, but also don't plan to make myself crazy with guilt. If you do that, what kind of vacation is it?

Easy for me to say, we'll see what happens when I come back in September!

Thank you all for your comments!

And thank you, Otto's Doll, for the link! I have found the page you mentioned and will read it from beginning to end!

Before I go to WDW, I have a trip to Puerto Plata (Dominican Republic) - That should be interesting to see how dining goes there too! (All - Inclusive resort - no pina coladas this time... sigh)

If I am going to be honest I have to admit that I don't even TRY to stay on atkins on vacation... I basically take a vacation from that too. BUT my strict rule is back on the day I come back..

I think the walking will make up for some of it, I know I lose weight when I go to WDW even if I eat more!

Personally, I think I would strive for just maintaining your weight during the vacation, then focus on losing when you return.

However, I think if you want to make some better choices in your eating, you could order a salad for the appetizer (if it's allowed on the silver plan), and for dessert, a lot of places have things that are fruit-based, which is better than a cake or tiramisu or something! You could also ask them to leave off the rice or potato or whatever it is that comes with the entree.

Also, have you heard of carb blockers? I've used them, and I don't think they help to lose weight, but they do seem to help in at least maintaining weight. Just keep in mind that they do not give you license to eat all the carbs you want!

Have a good time, and let us know what you end up doing!
