UY and when you can book

I think this is the year we will buy DVC. We are doing lots of research and will probably buy in September or October.

I have a question about UY and the 11 month booking window. Let’s say we have a Sept use year, and use all of our 2018 points in Sept 2018. Then we decide we want to go in Oct 2019. Can we still book 11 months in advance of the oct 2019 trip even though we don’t have our 2019 points yet? Or do you have to wait to book until you have points available.

(And I’m just using the dates as examples. I know if we close Sept 2018 we won’t be able to use the pints for a trip that month.)

Yes. It shows what points will be available for the date booked, not what points you currently have on your account.

Use year and booking window are separate concepts, but lots of people conflate them and get confused.

Booking window determines when you can book. Use year determines which points are used for the booking.

To use Sept 2018 UY points for an Oct 2019 vacation, you'd have to bank them prior to making the reservation. Otherwise they would not be available to book that vacation. You could use banked 2018 points, current 2019 points and borrowed 2020 points for that trip.

Points are loaded 3 years in advance. Everyone has 2020 points in their account and February use year just loaded 2021. This is because cruises can be booked 2 years in advance. So your 2019 points would be there now. All points use is based on the use year applicable to the date of stay, not when you book.
