That has been disproven. They said at the press conference that they haven’t found a motive, or any hints that it was pre planned.

The shooter purchased the weapons from a federally licensed firearms dealer, which means that a background check was probably done at the time of purchase. I’m sure that the ATF and FBI will come out with more information in the days to come.

This is a mental health problem. More mental health resources are needed at a state and local level pretty much everywhere. Especially for minors. In my state, if you are a parent whose child needs longer term (ie, not just 72 hr psych hold) inpatient psychiatric hospitalization, there are pretty much no options available to you. And that needs to change.

The TX governor mentioned in a press conference that the shooter posted on Facebook about 30 min before the school shooting that he was going to shoot his grandmother. Then posted that he HAD shot her. Then posted about 15 min before the school shooting that he was going to shoot up an elementary school.

I’m sure that more information will come out in the days to come as law enforcement continues its investigations.

What’s scary is I think this society is just more narcissistic & sociopathic. Those are “mental health” issues with no cure. I think there are many caused including social media.

Are you saying the US has more mental health issues than other nations?

You cannot drink until 21 - how about raising the age to purchase a gun age to 21? Some exceptions can be made - for instance if you are in the military at 19 you can have a firearm.

School boards are dealing with book banning issues and their fear that a child may realize that someone has two moms and not be able to handle it. Well how do you think a kid will handle school after witnessing a mass shooting?

I am an old lady who has had it with hand wringing and throwing up our arms and saying nothing can be done.

It's a mental health issue....it's a gun control issue...

Can it be both? Can we address both?? Can we not take away "your" guns while also making it harder for ill lunatics to get them? Maybe you need a license and insurance to own a gun...like a car? Maybe make accessing mental health easy and free. Maybe we make those wishing to get a gun go through the same hoops we make those seeking other controversial things go through (waiting periods, doctors note. Watching videos about the horrors when things go wrong). Maybe nobody needs an AR-15? Maybe mental health counseling becomes as routine as your annual physical?

Was chatting with some retired military friends who suggested that school security could be a good job to hand over to the military and be used as a way for veterans to reintegrate into civilian life...after you are discharged you can apply for a job as a school security officer.

That is putting a bandage on a broken leg. A school shouldnt need a security officer. The deadbolts on doors, the trainings kids go through at school in case of a shooting, security songs to teach 5 year olds.

It is all fighting the symptoms and not the disease.

It is a cultural and a political problem the US has.

I am sick beyond measure of the politicians and people focusing on the instruments used instead of the demented people who carry out heinous crimes because it's an easier soundbite.

This is the terrible thing I heard about as well.

We have all this tech monitoring things, I need leaders to explain to me, without fanfare why exactly no algorithms our tax dollars pay for can manage to see this? As far as I am concerned, over 20 years out from World Trade and Patriot Act there is no excuse for the shortcomings. What are they doing with the data if not this because THIS is what I want, being safe & children being safe is the priority of most of us so I want answers as to why this isn't a shared priority & expect I am not the only person who wants answers. This should be a thing of the past, it's not secret, the guy was shouting it and now more mother's cry - it's a failure of how things are done.

The school I work at has a camera on the front door and you hit the buzze, secretary asked who you are, then you enter vestibule, interior doors are locked, sign in Then you get buzzed into the school. Also we’re required to keep classroom doors closed and locked when kids are in. Was the Texas school unprotected? I find it alarming that this guy walked in. Has any more info come out about if?

Privacy law vs government vs social media requirements is probably part of the issue. Can we start a petition for change?
