Using IPad on Italy Trip

My parents are going to Italy in a few weeks. My mom wanted to use her iPad (3G Verizon) to keep in touch with those of us still in the U.S. by email. I know John and Kevin posted about this during their Italy trip, but I can't find the thread now. Can someone who knows about this give me some info I can pass on to my mom? Can she buy a data plan of some sort? Should she just try to go to Internet cafes? She had asked about using FaceTime, but I don't know if there are many wi-fi hotspots over there. I am actually pretty clueless about this, so any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

It would seem that when K&J went to Italy at Christmas they managed to get sims from vodafone, see here:-

The information about the pricing John gave away on the podcast (January 4th @ 8minutes 50 seconds)

They bought a 1 month sim or 3gb of data (whichever is first, I asume) for €25.

*just remember all cities will need to be input with their Italian names.

As for Wi-Fi I've always found it to be hit and miss, but it is available. Check the hotel websites before she travels.

You may want to check the iPad.

My iPad 2 (Verizon 3G) does not have the slot required to install a Sim card, so I am currently working on "Plan B" for my trip to Italy in five weeks.

I understand that other iPad 2s (like AT&T), do have the slot.

I may try to rely on WiFi only since two of our three hotels have free service.
