So I was attempting to explain use years to my wife this a.m. and I managed to get myself confused (easy to do).
So my points are allocated in Oct- this Oct (Oct 07) I will be getting Oct 07 or Oct 08 use year points????
I guess I need more coffee!!!:surfweb:

This OCT you would be getting 07 points. Are you familiar with your banking deadlines and such?

October 2007 use year points would be good for stays 10/1/07 to 09/30/08. You can bank them to October 2008 use year or borrow them for a stay before 10/1/07.

Use year month is the month you receive points for use during the following 12 month period. Sometimes it helps to make a use year chart for your particular month. An October UY chart looks like this:

Use Year.....Vacation Dates
2006.....Oct 1, 2006 thru Sep 30, 2007
2007.....Oct 1, 2007 thru Sep 30, 2008
2008.....Oct 1, 2008 thru Sep 30, 2009
2009.....Oct 1, 2009 thru Sep 30, 2010
2010.....Oct 1, 2010 thru Sep 30, 2011
etc.

As mentioned, points you will receive Oct 2007 apply to your 2007 use year: Oct 1, 2007 thru Sep 30, 2008.

Hope this helps.

thanks all for clearing this up... my brain seems to be working again :thumbsup2

It's also the month of the year in which your DVC ownership entitles you to free park admission and free dining plans for any stays that occur in that month....

Just to clarify, if any 'newbies' are reading, that Mtnman44 is joking.

There is no free park admission or free dining plans for members.

I'm very new to DVC having just bought at AKV in April, but one of the best pieces of knowledge I gained from these boards is regarding UY bookings. You aren't limited to waiting until your next UY to book trips using next UY points.

For example, we have a March UY. I have already booked a trip this August at AKV using '07 points and planned to take another in March '08. Our next trip will not begin until after the start of our next UY so we can book that next trip now and use '08 points for it.

I think the "you have to wait until you have points to book" is a very common misconception (myself included). You may have already been aware of this, but as a newbie myself I felt it was worth mentioning for the benefit of other newbies :)

Just to clarify, you don't technically 'receive' your points on your UY anniversary date. They are already there. In other words, your 2009, 2010, 2011....2040, 2041...etc. points are already in your account.

Points may be used at any time for a reservation made for dates within that Use Year which uses that year's points. Thus the limit for when you can make a reservation is strictly the 11/7 month dates. It has nothing to do with anyone's actual use year.

For example let's say someone has a March UY and wants to make a reservation for April 2008. They could actually call today, and borrow points from their 2009 UY to make that reservation. That's because their 2009 UY points are already in their account.

sorry, hope I didn't mislead anyone. Just wishing out loud I guess.....:lmao:

That's true, thanks for the clarification.

This usage was something that I didn't think of initially and felt it would benefit other newbies to know.

Caskbill- Now I am confused. I thought you could only borrow up to 1 year out? I.E. I want a ressie, my UY is June so I just got my 07 point but need a few more so I need to borrow from 08 points. But are you saying I could really borrow those and 09 points?

You can borrow points one 'use year' ahead. Thus you could borrow 2008 points into your 2007 use year. You could borrow 2009 points into your 2008 use year.

Remember, use year has nothing to do with calendar year. Those with a December use year are basically a year 'behind' the calendar year.

In your case, if the reservation you want to make is within your 2007 12-month use year, then you can borrow 2008 UY points for that reservation. You could only borrow 2009 UY points to make a reservation that falls within your 2008 UY timeframe.

With a June UY, if you want to make a reservation for any time between 6-1-07 and 5-30-08, you could borrow from your 2008 UY. If you want to make a reservation for any time between 6-1-08 and 5-30-09, you could borrow from your 2009 use year.

Let's say you want to make a reservation for July 2008. You could call 11-months ahead which would be in August 2007. When you call, at that time you could borrow 2009 points to make your July 2008 reservation.

You cannot borrow 2009 points and use them within a 2007 use year timeframe.

Hope this helps.

Great question, discussion and great job of fully explaining it Caskbill! It makes sense, but it can be hard to grasp especially when your use year falls late in the year. Years this and year that and yester year and tomorrow year can get very confusing. :goodvibes

I'm beginning to understand use year better, but don't know which use year I should choose. I read somewhere that December was a great use year, but I have too many expenses in December and January to worry about paying annual dues then. What use year do you suggest for a teacher?

I think all dues are due in Jan or Feb regardless of UY.

Oh well, that's good to know. It's not that big of a deal, but if I had a choice, I would choose to pay later in the year. The big thing is scheduling vacation in the summer or over spring break.

Seems like a Feb or Mar UY (April if your SB is always in April)would be best for plans which are for Spring Break or Summer Disney visits.

I prefer Dec but I have a primary usage plan for Disney vacations across the Christmas & NYE weeks, secondary usage is in Mar for SB third choice Early June so all but 3 rd choice are before banking deadline since Dec has May 31 as it's banking deadline.

My objective is a UY which provides me the greatest flexibility in the event of plan disruption to avoid points which are in my current account and I have no good options for using them that year.
