Hi,
I have flyed Airtran twice in two years and they have released their flights for August 2012 yet. When I did a search on the WDW website they offered good flight times return/departure from US Airways. Just wondering what has been people's experience with US airways? I haven't flown them since I was a kid. I am concerned because I have such a good experience with AirTran and would like to stick with them although I can wait I guess:lmao: Just wondering thanks!

What airport are you using? That's needed to answer the question.

In any case, US Air is primarily a north-south carrier on the east coast. I use them for 75% of my travel because of that....they offer frequent non-stops from DC to many places.

They're not a particularly customer friendly airline...they have bag fees, up-charge seats in front, huge change fees, and no meals for shorter flights. But they are no worse than any of the other main-line carriers (like United, Delta, American).

I would wait. US has a $150 per ticket change fee, you are still 9 months out.

I'm a Captain with USAirways and love the airline! Give us a try! You won't know until you fly us. Every airline has change fees, baggage fees, upcharge fees for upgrades to First Class, etc., so you won't experience anything differently from any other carrier in those regards. USAirways is a very large, international carrier that offers convenient service that competes directly with other low cost carriers. Give us a try!

It seems a bit odd that you, being in the airline industry, would make a statement like this.

First, not every airline has change fees: Southwest does not. Second, not every airline has baggage fees: Southwest and Jetblue don't charge for your first checked bag. (Southwest doesn't charge for the second bag either)
Third, not every airline has "upcharge fees" (whatever that is) to First Class (of course there is an additional fee...it's first class). Airtran will sometimes offer first class for a $49 upgrade on some legs, which is a no-brainer if you have 2 bags checked at a cost of $45, those are now free so the upgrade is only 4 bucks!

I used USAirways for years as the default airline for most places I went (mostly Florida) until Airtran came on the scene, then tried them (because of a direct flight to BMI) and loved their service, their prices and their planes (no Dash-8s or Canadairs, etc). So, Airtran became my default.

But, Airtran has limited routes and very limited schedules on those routes, so USAirways is still on my list. When using them the experience is pretty much the same as Airtran, except no XM radio and a variety of aircraft sizes that force me to consider how to pack my expensive gear when travelling for work. USAirways pretty much goes anywhere, to various airports big and small, and does it more often. Their fleet is larger, and with smaller planes that are able to serve smaller markets. Unfortunately, they also cancel flights a lot more, especially to and from smaller cities if there is a "lack of participation", or as they refer to it: "mechanical difficulties".

In the last year I've flown Airtran, USAirways, Southwest, United, American, Jetblue and Delta. Unless the airline cancels or changes your flight, or is responsible for some delay, the experience is pretty much the same except for the price you pay, with the obvious exception of Southwest that has it's open seating policy, which multiple other threads are dedicated to.

I would agree, but the proof is in the prices. For some reason, it sometimes costs USAirways 2-3 times more to take the same aircraft to and from the same two cities when compared to Airtran, Southwest, Jetblue.

I will say, USAirways has a great Frequent Flyer program, with miles that never expire. We just took a trip to Hawaii, and used miles that I have been building up for almost 15 years...never cashed them in. They covered 2 first class round trip to Hawaii. Many airlines have expiration dates on their reward miles.

Miles on USAirways do expire if you do not have any activity in 18 months. My last activity was last May, my account shows an expiration date of 11/30/2012. As long as you keep flying or posting activity they don't expire but be careful to watch the dates if you are not.

Good point, I forgot that I do use my USAirways card so that keeps activity on the account, even though I've gone for over 18 months without flying USAirways.

I would be flying from Philadelphia International Airport, now I am hearing possible mergers between Airtran and Southwest. Thanks for all your help!

Yes, but USAir has 7 non-stop flights a day from PHL to MCO. So even if the original flight is changed, there will almost certainly be another convenient flight.

If you have a good price for the US Air flight, I'd take it. Philly is a hub for US Air, so even if they revise schedules a little, there should always be lots of flights to choose from.

In my experience, US Airways is more likely to misplace luggage than any of the other legacy carriers. Not that it's happened every time we've checked luggage with US Airways but I've had at least one bag mis-directed on three of our last five US Airways flights in which we've checked luggage.

Not specifically indicative of US Airways but you may well find that the flight that you book is changed between now and August (time changes, changes from non-stops to flights with stops and even cancellations can, and do, occur) if you're booking this far out.

That was your experience.

US Air actually has the best performance among the legacy carriers so far this year: See page 33

And yes, some of US Air's regional carriers might not have the same good performance, but that dosen't apply in this situation because virtually all of the non-stops between PHL and MCO are US Air, not regionals.

I was thinking more if they wanted to change their plans, they would get hit with the $150 change fee. For example, they wanted to leave a day later because something came up.

It's funny you are saying about the lost luggage, that happened to me as a young teen in 1988 and several of my friends

US Airways isn't my favourite airline, but if the schedule and price works for you, no reason to run away from it.
